I have always loved including mass media news reporters in combat units. For instance, I just loved wading ashore in Somalia with CNN cameras rolling. That was so special...Hi Mom! Or when Geraldo reported troop positions in Iraq risking not only his life, but the lives of the men he was traveling with...good times! Loose lips sink ships? Don't be absurd. The enemy has a sense of honor and would never use telegraphed information to one up his foes.
 
Is she meat for those who want same sex/opposite sex romance? Probably. Has she any other real purpose aboard the Normandy? Probably not. I say feed her to the Reapers and let her report on their movements. I trust myself and I trust my team. Everybody else is suspect including the chain of command, so why the hell would I want a damned news reporter on my ship?

Regarding looks, yeah it's not perfect. But it may yet be rough renders only. I expect we'll be pleased with the final product (er... don't read too much into that).

Ieldra: I was referring to the graphics, they don't look very polished. I can't say I'm amazed by the outfit but if they do change it I would not be opposed. As for dev reasons for including her... I don't think anyone's debating those lol. Hopefully she has her own merits. We'll just have to see.
Mech: I haven't read the leak but I would assume she was assigned to the Normandy by Alliance higher-ups who aren't too keen on giving Shepard free reign after his association with Cerberus and the whole "blowing up a solar system thing". I expect she'll keep tabs on him. It could also be for propaganda purposes to inspire the resistance across the galaxy.

For someone who is talked about as nothing more than nerd-bait, the designed character isn't that attractive.

Not that she's ugly or anything and I'm already a fan of the character due to a potentially interesting role and the serious whining over the casting decision.
