They ESPECIALLY didn't need it for their most recent character reveal.

Kaidan's face is not scanned from his VA, Raphael Sbarge. Yeah, when Raphael was younger he looked more like Kaidan, but it's still obviously not the same person.Dasher1010 wrote...

Like how TIM somewhat resembles a younger Martin Sheen, or how Bastila (
As for exact face maps, the only success they had so far is Sheploo.

But I am more worried about everyone's dead-eyed look. They really need to fix the super-white sclera and the glaring fakeness of the texture.

what? The "had to be sexy" is mapped?
Also, Mapping is not necessary. After all, the best characters are the ones with no human counterpart.
But I guess it would be awesome for me, if I was a VA and could also see that I'm in the game in person.
On the other hand, I doubt that Yvone Strahovski is fond of all the rule 34 and 'dat ass' images.

Seriously though, I do like the mapping, but I agree that it does need some work. Most of the time it's fine, but there are occasionally problems with it. I think I would prefer that they mapped the actors face and then made changes to fit the character. Unless the actor looks nothing like the character, such as with Ashley. I guess I'm saying I want them to make the characters the best they can be.

Edit: Ash's face was mapped. They just didn't use Brooks.

What about Ash, Kaidan, Jack? Their faces look very good IMORandom Jerkface wrote...
The unmapped faces tend to be far more expressive, and generally not awful-looking. The same cannot be said for any of the facemapped characters sans Sheploo, and we all know he still has his frightening moments.

ME: "Hi Martin! Got any tiger blood?"
TIM: "I'm TIM dangit!"
ME: "Riiiiight!"
ME: "OMG! Trinity!"
ARIA: "No, no! I'm Aria! Don't f-"
ME: "Is Neo with you?"
ARIA:
For the most part I prefer that the characters look unique unless they are playing themselves. It is even better if I've never seen their faces so that the character is completely free of luggage. Probably one of the reasons I love independent films. Unknown actors.

It seems really unnecessary that she plays HERSELF, as a REPORTER, which she already DOES. Especially since her face doesn't seem to translate well into the game.

Jack, I think, is an exception. It seems like they put more effort into her model overall (most likely because of the tats). She's also the most physically expressive character, so even when she gets that U3 glaze-eyed look, it's easier to ignore. What about Ash, Kaidan, Jack? Their faces look very good IMO
Ash and Kaidan still look pretty scary on occasion...especially what we've seen (of Ash) in ME3.
Could be just me, though.

Although there are some good examples of facemapping, so long as they do it with a little stylization.

I'm in favor of face mapping. It adds variety and diversity to the looks of characters. IMO many faces that aren't mapped have a very similar look to them.. almost like they're all related. Of course the main characters look different, more effort is obviously applied to them. But I'm seen a lot of copies with maybe minor tweaking to them.
I agree. But sometimes the faces don't translate well for some reason. Hence why I said to facemap with some tweaks to make it look better.

IMO the only characters with a face-scan who really look good and not all Uncanny Valley are default Sheploo and apparently Joker. Miranda, Diana, and all the others just seem unnatural. More than a well-rendered, completely computer-generated face.
Sheploo? Have you seen him smile?

Yes, I'm aware of the infamous rape face. That's one of the few instances in which you can tell that yeah, this was not motion captured. Other than that, it's fine. Maybe it's just because Vanderloo is one of those few people gifted with the ability to look hot (no ******) with a blank expression.Dasher1010 wrote...

As for whether they should make characters look like real people, rather than just make up something that looks good... I'd say to make something that looks good.

I am getting a bit worried about the way everyone looks in these videos lately. Very stiff, unnatural looking faces, reminded me most of the faces from Dead Space 2. Awesome game but the beginning animation of Issac and Nicole's conversation >_< man, that was painful to watch.
I mean, Mass Effect 3 is coming out SOON . Surely the excuse that the game is still in the works doesn't hold a thimbleful of water anymore?
