Characters speak with real world accents because their are no voice actors with speculative future accents around. If they tried making up future accents, that would just sound silly and distracting.

Well Anderson is supposedly from London. But yeah he's not very British.

But to answer OP's question:
Alliance = Allies
(That's why it's American/Canadian)

Reapers + Batarians + Cerberus = Axis of EVIIIILLL!!!
(They are like Commy-Nazes. But worse...)

Please try for  fun of it  imagining Keith David doing a   British London Accent.

I was under the impression that the in-universe explanation is that the translators "correct" for dialect. Ergo, Shep is North American, so her/his translator translates NA accents. If this is true, the only characters we know for sure are speaking English (because some characters clearly aren't supposed to be - Matsuo comes to mind) are the ones who don't sound like they hailed from Amerilandia.

Except Tali.

i dont think udina is american or canadian. plus its just easier and probably a majority of people playing the game are used to these accents. a better question would be why every alien species can speak perfect english.

Yeah, as for an in-game canon explanation, I'd cough it up to the universal translators. I think the people you hear with accents (Dr. Michel, Samesh Bhatia, etc.) actually know English, no translation required. If someone's speaking in another language, boom! Standard American/Canadian accent. As for the quarians.... I guess the translator designers got creative for different dialects of quarian or something? XD idk

Udina is... something, I can't really place his accent. And then there's that Indian guy you meet in the first game... the one with the dead wife.

I know Kaidan was greek, but why is all the Normandy American and Canadian?  Do people in Mass Effect even have accents anymore?  If London is a visitable city, will they have American accents?

Despite not sounding like one Captain Anderson is a Londoner. The character is British.

Chakwas is British also, and Miranda of course is Australian. So not everyone on the Normandy is American or Canadian. In the Normandy crash site DLC many of the names of the fallen crewman suggest origins outside of North America as well.
