You could say it's Star Trek lazyness which basically assumes that only people going into space are Americans (they have Nasa see) the Russians (1st dog in space) and a few Brits and other rich nationalities along for the ride while the rest of humanity eats soylent green and complains about daytime TV.

Or it's more likely it would cost too much to show the true face of humanity in space our history proves that we like move about espcially when times are bad and in ME Earth is worse than Milton Keynes Birmigham and Southend Meaning millions of people would leave the Earth in seach of a better life. Which Game Developer is going spend a whole heap of money doing the various accents to show the truly global face of the Alliance when they can just pop down the road get some get good VAs and some famous faces for a lot less

Or Space, or Earth.

BUT: If he's from Earth, then he's from North America.

If he's a spacer, then his parents were from North America.

And if he's from Mindoir, then North Americans must have settled Mindoir.

Easy.

Ken the Engineer is Scottish
Dr Chakwas is English
Donovan Hock was Afrikaans
And thats just a few.

It's funny how all the Aliens had American accents though.

Some of the people are  intended to be Europeans or Asians also have North American accents. Captain Anderson for example, is supposed to be from London.

Although we don't know anything about their backgrounds, it is likely Admiral Mikhailovich is Russian, Admiral Tohoku is Japanese, and Fai Dan is Chinese. All of them have North American accents. Kasumi, who is probably supposed to be from Japan originally, also has a North American accent.

So in Mass Effect you can't really divine an origin of a character by how they sound. Some characters who are supposed to have origins outside of North America will have appropriate accents, and some won't.

I'm australian and it was cool to have miranda as australian but I'm sick of it only being australian females, where are all the aussie guy's (come on, sam worthington, chris hemsworth even hugh jackman would be good)

^This.

It's also off-putting when the only Australian accent in the game, belongs to an overly-sexulised character.

Didn't you know? The Systems Alliance was formed after technology allowed House Hunters International to go into space. That's why there are so many Canadians up there.

Hopefully with the recent success of aussie actors we will see more aussie characters in game and hopefully not american's who TRY(and fail) to imitate our accent.

Anderson is British.

I think i've heard this before, but, whaaat? He certainly has no British accent, it is certainly hilarious imagining him speaking like Sir. Trevor McDonanld (www.youtube.com/watch) =D

That said i do perscribe to the view that in the time of Mass effect (when there's likely a vacuum maglev train that crosses the atlantic in 15 minutes) an accent will no longer be able to gauge where a person is from (at a stretch where they were raised, but you could just get it from your parents). Hell it's a pretty useless way of guessing where people are from now (though i do live in a fairly international city, Oxford).

So, i'm all for more accents, but don't be so shortsighted as to think they need to have a backstory from that part of Earth.

Zaeed and Chakwaz are English.
Miranda is Australian.
Ken is Scottish.
Donovan Hock is African. I think?
But yeah... there are lots of characters who appear to have varying origins with North American accents. Captain Anderson for example. But I believe they explain that somewhere.

Does anyone else here love Afrikaan accents in English things? Like the main character from District 9 and Donovan Hock and etc.

Also more on-topic I'm not sure what the lore excuse for not seeing many non-Americans and Canadians but there are a few foreign accented people on the Normandy. Miranda, Dr. Chakwas, Ken,

EDIT: Also as for the aliens, well technically they don't have any accent from Earth, since they are speaking in another language that is being translated. So its kind of understandable they all sound American to Shepard.

I'm aussie and I don't mind the accent, they should use it, just find the right thickness of the accent otherwise it's.....odd (like the really thick australian accent in dead island)

I nearly said something very stupid because i've always known it as just 'South-African', not it's proper name 'Afrikaan'. My g/f falls over herself for these accents, it's quite unseemly...<_<

I'm kinda missing German characters ^^

"Conrad Verner" - sounds like a German name but is none afaik (and I'm a German).
"Steven Hackett" - Hackett could be anglicized version of a German name.

... uhh ... yes. That's it. No Germans in ME. At least we have French/Canadian names, huh?

The accents don't bother me, it's the dialect.

Take Zaeed for example, a cockney, sounds just like anyone from London, either from the East End or South of the River (if he's as hard as nails as he reckons he is, he'll be a Bermondsy boy, probably supports Millwall, hopefully in 2185 they'd have made it to the Premiership). Thing is, you'd never hear anyone from London use the term 'Goddamn', we just wouldn't say that, and when Zaeed said it, it just sounded American in English clothing.

Turian_punk_75:
You don't say that - now. Today. 2012.
Zaeed says it. Tomorrow. 2187.

Languages have their evolution, that also includes adding new words ... ^^

---

Still, the lack of German characters is a bit ... odd. Do Germans DON'T have a role in that time? In that case I don't wanna live on this planet anymore ^^
