Is it actually ever stated that Shepard is American? Or are people just assuming he is because of his VA? I don't think we are ever told Shepard's nationality, especially since we create our own Shepard. Even if s/he is Earth born, it is never said where s/he grew up on Earth.

... uhh ... yes. That's it. No Germans in ME. At least we have French/Canadian names, huh?

I say we trash Vega's character (because he seems like a tool), and turn him into a German/Austrian Arnold-the-Governator type character,

He could punch through a Geth 'stomach' pull out it's circuits and say, "Warranty Void"

When he single-handedly pulls down a Reaper Juggernaught he can say "You Reap what you sow"

and don't forget;

"Get to the MAKO!"
"Get to the KODIAK!"
"Get to the Nuormandy!
"

Sorry, i was raised on Action Movies...

Probably, it just sounds as if the scriptwriter didn't reserch the dialect properly. We cockneys are protective of our accent, we still haven't forgiven Dick Van ****** for his attempt in Mary Poppins. Although Johnny Depp nailed it in From Hell.

I'd like to see more european accents, German, French, Spanish, Irish and Welsh, or. How about some English Regional accents, Mancunian, Brummie, Scouse, Geordie, I'd love to be in the middle of a battle with a squaddie from Liverpool, order him or her to fire a concussive shot and he or she says ''ave some 'o' that! Ye' Ceerburus bastad'...

The question is: does "Zaeed Massani" like a normal british name? ^^
Guess his dialect is more or less a mix of yours and something else. Believe me - I'm a Saxon and live in Swabia - that's 500km south-west of my home land. Saxon & Swabia dialects are -really- different, but my Saxon got a bit watered down and accepted some Swabia influence - within just two years.
Most likely Zaeed's story is quite similar.

And yes, we definitely need mor European accents in the series. Okay, Tali sounds a bit like a funny mix of Russian/German dialect (English version only), but she's no Human, therefore it doesn't apply here ...

I'm curious as to what states Tali, Garrus, Wrex, Liara, Ken etc etc were born in?

Ken seems to be Scottish. I've never met anyone else that would willingly (and happily!) eat haggis.

In sweden we call it "pölsa". Everyone who is not a vegetarian eats that, even the toddlers. Its traditionally served with egg and pickled beetroot.
:)

What are you talking about?  It clearly makes NO sense that a game by a Canadian game studio would have Canadian and American -sounding/looking characters featured prominently.  I mean, this NEVER happens in television or film.

I kind of get why A LOT of people would end up with what pretty much amounts to an American or Canadian accent. I was born and raised in Hong Kong till I was 18, half British, half German. I went to an English school there and had classmates from across the entire world. With no one accent to cling onto it makes a lot of us colonials and expats have this bizarre speech, that usually sounded like one of the accents from other English speaking former colonies such as America, Australia, South Africa and Canada. However with the huge amount of media coming from the North Americas, it provided the closest thing to that stable accent to cling onto making Canadian and American sounding accents more prevalent.

The future of Earth in the Mass Effect universe may still be nation based but its even closer knit than our current world is. Already today here in Birmingham I hear many people talking in a strange hybrid that could be mistaken for an American dialect. This would undergo a huge increase with the tightening of the global village.

That and they can only hire so many voice artists...

Actually, going by VA, Shepard's more likely to be Canadian, but you're right.  Canadian accent aside, Shepard's nationality is left ambiguous.

I know Kaidan was greek, but why is all the Normandy American and Canadian?  Do people in Mass Effect even have accents anymore?  If London is a visitable city, will they have American accents?

Unless his last name is

Kaidanidis
Kaidanopolos

Or

Papakaidan
Hatzikaidan

He is not Greek.

I'm pretty sure he's from Singapore.

"
Kaidan was born in 2151 into a family already familiar with space: his father served in the Alliance military. After his mother was downwind of a transport crash in Singapore, Kaidan was exposed in utero to element zero and beat the odds, gaining biotic potential instead of terminal brain cancer "

im not an american/canadian. But Bioware is american/canadins and make a game about american/canadians. If you want to make a game about someone else. Go ahead and make it. Bioware is not preventing this action.

All this Political Correctness whine is making me sick.

Well, the way I'm interpreting it is that specific cultural types and/or continent based cultures are fading fast in the Earth of Mass Effect.

They've dropped hints throughout the franchise that humanity is "blending" into a "global race" and that sooner or later, there won't be specific groups anymore.

Miranda Lawson (Australian) and Kasumi Goto (Japanese) are pretty much the only ones you can point to and say "they came from here".

Case in point: Anderson.
According to the info I read somewhere, he's half African, half Native American and he grew up in London.
His geographical location may have adjusted his accent to fit in with the locals, but that's probably all it did.

And there was another note somewhere that the global education system is gradually eliminating accents.
