@Jedimaster88, you seem to vastly overrate the power of a King. In most systems (and certainly in medieval Europe), their power was far from absolute. They were not above the law and were frequently forced to compromise their own wishes in order to avoid offending their vassals or the Church. And as far as naming your successor, some kings did do that, but the result was very often civil war after their deaths.

Hmm I was expecting something like this. Its been some years since my last history lessons so I dont remember much about medieval times and kings. Still you´d think that a king has at least some power of his own, that allowes him to decide who to be with. You talk as if a king is some sort of prisoner that has absolutely no free will and no right to do anything on his own and thats not how I see them. I´ve always thought that they have power over some certain matters at least.

As for the successor business. Yes civil wars are possible, especially if there are really power hungry people around. In the end is it much different if there is an heir? Some scheming bas**** might as well assasinate the their and there could still be civil war in the end.

Alistair could have done with bringing it up beforehand but it's a sensible enough decision.

Unfortunately never bringing anything up until it'll cause the most drama seems to be a Fereldan trait.

To be fair, in contrary to Riodan's (sp?) existance, there was enough foreshadowing that the relationship to Alistair might not have a future. There are the hints of Wynne talking about "duty could part us" (the Wardens) and that being a Grey Warden "is about making sacrifices". Good, blabbering of an old biddy it might have been, but it made me very ominous during my first playthrough and all Bioware-jaded alerts within me went amok. Especially after the talk with Alistair where he says that he doesn't know what would happen and if the Warden would rather break up with him now. He is giving you that choice before the Landsmeet, after all. (Even if it personally kills him to do so.)

Also the world in which DA plays makes it pretty obvious that a mage/elf might possibly not be accepted as a ruling person, even if it is only as a spouse to the *actual* ruling king. With mages the society simply fears the influence she could have on the king (mind control and all that jazz) and it is against the Chantry's rule. Well and as for elves...that is kinda self- explanatory. They are not worth enough to rule over the humans. Easy as. (puke)
