I was just wondering what was a good thing to mix with a swashbuckler and at what lvl. Or of course if swashbuckler is even a good class

Some details about the type of character you're trying to create would help.

i just kinda want a smart melee toon. If u catch my meaning. I dont want a brute i want more of a sword wielding, well spoken guy. lol i dont know how to say it right. Kinda like aragorn only with less of a ranger feel.

Well, the usual is to take 3 Swashbuckler levels and spend the rest on other classes. They gain some interesting stuff at 14 and 19, but normally you can get better things with all those levels.

Most swashbucklers go DEX based and use two weapons, but STR based ones are also possible. Rogue or fighter type classes are a good mix. Swash/Wizard/Eldritch Knight is a good mix too, but that's for a fighter/mage type.

There are many things you can do. If you want to use only one weapon, I'd go STR based. I suggest taking a look here for ideas, and you can also ask here if you have more questions.

Swash suggests a Dex-based focus because you get Weapon Finesse as a bonus feat and light armour. However, the Int bonus stacks with the Str bonus to damage meaning that with a rapier, say, you can just do what you'd do normally and have the Int as a bonus. Swash means that you can afford to give up the Str damage in favour of Dex, without losing damage overall or having to spend a feat on Dex, but IMO Str works better (at least at lower levels) because then you get both damage bonuses.

If you do want a finesse fighter, Swash is the way to do it. However, there's nothing that says a given Swash has to go that route.

Either way, I like the Duelist PrC with Swashbucklers because you get Int to AC (yay for smart fighters!) and a damage bonus with piercing weapons (*cough* rapier). Rogue is a decent base class to combo them with because the high skill points really fit the theme. Fighter is an obvious choice too because a few levels are great for all those bonus feats.

could i mix a ranger with a swashbuckler? Or would that be a bad mix? They just both seem to have similar qualities, especially if the ranger is duel wield based

I've experimented with a swashbuckler / ranger character. I found that the archery path for rangers was a good compliment. You can soften enemies up from afar, then switch to the rapier when they close in. Their high dexterity gives them a great attack bonus with a longbow, which helps to offset the attack penalty from 'Rapid Shot' (2nd level ranger), allowing you to really pelt enemies with a hail of arrows.

Or just specialize in melee. Unless you want different fighting styles, dual wielding is the obvious option for a ranger/swash. You can still use a bow if necessary. I'd go STR based with that mix of classes. Swashbuckler wouldn't be adding much, other than a bit of damage, but it's a viable combo.

Check out nwndb.com. You can search for builds there. Also, use Kaedrin's class pack for bug fixes and more swashbuckler content and more int synergy stuff.
