Did you post it in SoLD's thread? So long as you're cool with true con crit, I'll tell both good and bad for ya.

I didn't. I'm fine with constructive criticism, but I've been debating on whether or not to upload it to my blog on here, which is the place where I'm going to put all my DA fanfic. I'm currently in the midst of writing a DAO fanfic, so that's why I'm debating.

Maybe I'll upload it on here, but in the title mark it as something separate from the DAO fanfic I'm writing.

Congratulations to all the finalists/winners! I'm disappointed in myself for not having done better, but it was definitely a great experience. Thank you, BioWare, for the opportunity.

Gratz to everyone who submitted an entry and to those who placed! Everyone worked hard, and I've read some pretty awesome entries. I'm usually just a lurker but just wanted to say that you all are awesome writers, and I'm betting they had a rough time picking winners. I read many that were worthy of praise even though they didn't place. Hugs to everyone who tried!

Didn't win? Not a problem!

Make a machinima based on your story, that's what I'm doing ;) Sometimes it takes a motion picture to make a story shine ;D

Congrats to the winners of course!

Congratulations to everyone!

Also oh my god, DG, your post made me lol: "Some writers will abuse a thesaurus so badly you half-expect to find it wandering dazed alongside the highway, dress in tatters and lipstick smeared across its face."

Aww, I think this could be a temporary end to my writing endeavors. :crying: Pretty sad not to even warrant top 20 out of 400 entries.  Pardon me; I'm going to go drown my head in a toilet.

Congratulations to the winners :)

I know the feeling, pal.

Personally, I'd like to see the original five choices from before they changed the rules mid-game.

Or see which writers read which entries. The sake of knowing is enough, but the different writers have their own tastes and preferences and knowing which one judged me could help me determine what exactly made my story not good enough to even be in the top 20.

Dont be discouraged or too disappointed - 400+ entries are alot - we have a huge community of talented writers.

No one could say Tolkien is a bad writer, however I yawned all the way through the Lord of the Rings, I was only 10 or 11 at the time, but my only memory is "when is this freakin journey going to finish."I am glad Jackson made a movie because I would never re-read it.

I really want to read Silmarillion but not sure if I will make it through Posted Image

Am I going to regret announcing that to all ? Posted Image

I stupidly said something similar in world chat once to some "grammer natzi" harassing someone for their lack of grammer skills in World Chat on LotRO, and the natives came after me LOL

I am only saying this because - your story may be good but did not appeal to the tastes of the judge.  Get concrit though to be sure you cannot improve on it.

I'm thankful that the writing team changed the rules mid-game! It was very generous of Mr. Gaider to expand his original role in
this contest. His tweets updating status on the competition came over the weekend, which suggests that the team volunteered their personal time give everybody a fair shot.

Keep in mind that 20 out of 400+ entries is less than 5%. There's no shame in not making the top 20. Rather, it should only highlight the magnificent works of those who did manage to place there. Being in the top 95 percentile is an enormously difficult task and takes both luck and skill.

Don't get me wrong. I placed in the Top 20 and I'm very honoured to be there.

But I still want to grab DG by the shoulders and go, "Help me IMPROVE!"

Quite apart from the fact that he'd probably call the police or something, I think that impulse is pretty unfair, given the really detailed post that he put up after the competition. I've read it a couple of times. It's thought-provoking. I learned a few things that I'm going to take on board. It's for us all.

I nearly chocked on my water when I read the whole writing team read all of them.

Er, I think I may have phrased that poorly. I don't think each member of the writing team read each entry, but they divided the 400+ entries among the writing team and came up with a list of the top 20. Sorry for any confusion (and/or water choking =X)!

Changing the rules seems a little unprofessional on some levels to me. Not to mention it makes chances of making the top five drastically lower. A bunch of forum staff probably aren't as thoroughly critical as the whole team of actual DA writers.

My entry had an error early on that both me and my proof-reader/editor missed. I didn't find out about it until much later after I sent it in and it probably screwed me to some degree. I would imagine that the writing team are big on exact grammar/punctuation.

I would hope that the judges are thorough and critical so that the top 5 and top 20 are named based on the merit of their work, and not because something slipped through the cracks. At least, it makes me feel better to know that even though I did not make it to the top 20, the reason was because there were better entries out there and not because somebody else had an inferior entry but just got lucky instead.

And who's to say that the forum staff were any less thorough and critical than the writer's pit?

To Shadow of Light Dragon:

Thank you for being so diligent with updating your thread!

If you look at the announcement page, it states that the team who read over every entry was comprised of Mr. Gaider plus four members of his writing team - hence the 'Writer's Pit' moniker.  Not the forum staff.

The rule change was unexpected, but it seems to me that a full re-read of the entire set of entries and a 20-story selection from which to find the winners actually improved the odds, not diminished them.  Originally the team selected 5 entries and gave them to DG to select the ultimate winner.  This gave 15 other entries a narrowed shot at the top spot, which they wouldn't have had except for that re-selection.  It gave every single entry a second chance at being selected for the short list.  It was a prodigious effort on their part, and entirely unnecessary - DG could have chosen from the subset he was originally given, and the top 20 list as we have it now would not exist.

It would be really interesting to know how many (if any) of that original five that were selected before they changed the judging process made it into DG's top 20. I mean I'm sure it would be heartbreaking for us to find out and they'll never tell us, but a part of me will always be curious. Our stories have gone on a little journey without us and we'll never be able to know exactly what they've been through.

While I did not enter to contest, I wanted to thank Bioware and Dragon Age. Playing the games opened the door to writing fiction that I thought had closed a long time ago for me. I wrote a massive fanfic that my sister teased me about (asking if I was going for Gone with the Wind in the Age of Dragons), a couple of songs and two very very short stories.

As David pointed out in his article, this is THEIR sandbox we are playing in, but playing in their sandbox has sent me back to another genre that a I dearly love--regency and historical romance fiction. It feels very good to be back with Wellington on the Peninsula or with Bathurst in London once more. I'd missed the gowns and the manners.

Thank you, Bioware, for renewing and refreshing my love of story telling.

I don't know how to describe this response other than, well, "correct." The interest shown by not only the fans involved, but the administration as well is very, very cool.

^^ Many people were more interested by the prospect of being read by one of Bioware's writers than actually winning, IMO. In that sense I think it was a good thing. :) And we got to read his blog afterwards about how much he enjoyed reading them, and how some of them inspired him.

Professional or not, I think it was cool.

i admittedly feel disappointed i didn't win, but then i remember i've never been good at the actual writing aspect.
