is it because those folks don't like playing as femshep or they just want more variety for maleshep

I would like the option. I don't always play femshep and its not about variety.

EDIT: Also I really like her character.

No, but doesn't mean you have to act like an a*shole. Some people doesn't want to play as FemShep just to romance Sam. Is that so bad?

I would like the option. I don't always play femshep and its not about variety.

MShep can have two different same sex relationships: Cortez and Kaidan.
FShep can have one same sex relationship: Traynor.

Liara doesn't count because she's (technically) not female, being from a "non-gendered" species.

As it is, the LI numbers are skewed heavily in MShep's favor.
MShep can romance Ashley, Liara, Jack, Miranda, Tali, Kaidan, Cortez. Jack and Miranda got screwed in ME3. That leaves five possibles, four if you count that there's only one VS. MShep gets Jack, Miranda, Tali and Cortez all to himself.
FShep can romance Liara, Kaidan, Garrus, Thane, Jacob, Sam. Thane and Jacob got screwed BIG TIME, so that leaves four possible options, three if Kaidan died on Virmire. FShep gets Garrus, Thane (dead), Jacob (cheater) and Sam to herself.

In other words, Sam should stay just as she is.

If everyone was bi it would have felt like too much fanservice. Making everyone in the universe bisexual so that the player can have fun banging the Galaxy is a terrible concept, really. Sam is gay because that's what she is, it's part of her character, period.

Stop asking for game to bend backwards for you, guys. It doesn't help anyone.
