I did like the Traynor romance, much better than how they handled Kelly in ME2.

^ i think Gabriella Daniels, if you don't romance Samantha and do not get Gabby and Ken together.
or Diana Allers if you do not romance either of them.
I also think that Gabby and Sam would be a good fit. I like them both a lot and I think they'd get along.
I'm not a fan of Diana Allers. I also can't ever get her to talk to me, so I don't know how a romance with her would even be pursued. I'd rather romance Sam anyway.
I find Allers trashy. Sam is sweet, but it really was a bit rushed. It didn't feel much like an actual relationship developing. Well then again, there is reapers everywhere so....

It's not Y chromosome itself that's determinant factor of sex development.
Theoretically it's possible that either Shepard or Traynor could be XY females (for example in cases of Androgen Insensitivity, Swyer Syndrome and others).
When you create sperm cells from a females bonemarrow the child won't be male. Though this is only theoretical, maybe i should have written that.
Aside of XY females, there are also XX males, so it's not entirely true. And aside of that, there are also transpeople.
Generally, sex development depends mainly on prenatal hormones, most genes associated with it are in fact shared by both men and women and are triggered by those hormones. Whole part of Y chromosome is containing SRY gene which is responsible for creating testes instead of ovaries, and then they produce large amount of androgens to masculinize the rest of the body. If for whatever reason those androgens won't work (for example, aside of genetical reasons, if the mother took to her organism something with anti-androgens - many pesticides have such effect), the result will be in most extreme case phenotypical female, in other, a child with ambiguous genitals. And vice versa when child with ovaries get from some source androgens during prenatal development.

I also find Allers a bit trashy. That shirt is just too - er - low class, in my opinion.
I do feel like an actual relationship was developed with Traynor. There are a lot of "conversations" that Shepard can have with her, even if they are of the auto-conversation type. Traynor has the majority of my favourite quotations from the game including:
"I'm a military officer on a military ship, so oorah, Commander. Let's blow them to hell."
"Just never thought I'd see a woman under all that armour."
"So suck it up, princess. You're in the military now, and you're going to win this for us."
And especially:
"Whatever happens - I love you. Now, go save the world... again."
That whole interaction with Traynor before leaving for Earth had me in tears. I thought it was very well done. I felt that the relationship got rather personal with the interactions in between missions. Her hatred for Cerberus and her developing hatred for the Reapers (going from "I wanted to see them defeated" to "I wanted to see them blown up") was very interesting to take part in.

Look i'm not the expert on the field so let's not get into a discussion on this, all i wanted to say was that it's not impossible for Samantha and Shepard to have biological children, Miranda and her sister is an example of this.

Not pissed but it would have been nice. Even for male shepard she comes off as just a cool character, her sexuality doesn't really matter. Tali is the only ME romance I've cared for, but I may have to do a femshep playthrough for Traynor. Great character considering she's limited to only one game.

I stumbled across this video that showcases the romance between Shepard and Samantha from a camera that's much further away. And yes, he has one of Liara that's very revealing.

I had to turn that off - something just doesn't look right about Shep sitting there in a dress, quite like that, when she looks up and 'decides'.
Actually, I think that shep kinda looks like allers... trashy

And we're pissed for not getting any hetero options.
Actually I like that Traynor isn't available to men, and Cortez isn't available to women. It accurately reflects real life. There are going to be some people who are out of your reach because your equipment doesn't qualify. It was very well done and nice that they left some options unatainable for both sexes.
Manshep STILL gets the most choice, period, so I can't feel all that much sympathy for you.

I think that video games, and BioWare games especially, need more non-physical relationships between characters. One of the things I love most about James is that he's not always trying to get under my armour. He's a cool friend, he's a nice guy, and he's Hispanic, which I feel is also underrepresented in video games.
Not everyone plays for both teams and not everyone is always on the prowl for other people's cash and prizes. It's good to see games moving towards more legitimate friendships across genders.

That all said, if they wanted to make clearly gay and lesbian characters that they then 'let' the player turn it is likely to be offensive to a lot of people. Better not go down that path.

I wanted to say something really angry and sarcastic, but I stopped myself because I realized that it would be hypocritical of me. The number of times I wished certain heterosexual characters were at least bisexual would fill a volume a thousand pages thick. So, rather than be hypocritical, I'll just explain the WHY behind the anger.
Heterosexual characters are ubiquitous. They're everywhere. If you see a character in a computer game (and I'm not just talking about Bioware games here), you can be 99% sure that that character is straight. But non-heterosexual (by which I mean, mostly bisexual) characters are very very rare indeed. Completely homosexual characters are almost non-existant. It's very nice to see exclusively homosexual characters, and because of their rarity, I feel a very deep vicious urge to protect them from being "turned".
So... keep your grubby paws off of Sam, thanks!

To tell the truth it looks like she was "turned" into lesbian option in the last moment. Before that delay in release Bioware stated that there would be no gay romances. Only just then they changed their minds. Propably she (and Steve) was supposed to be a minor character a'la Ken and Gabby.
Unfortunately, it looks like they didn't care to put much effort into "adjusting" her, unlike with Steve. Apparently, they only changed last conversation and added tasteless sex scene (since absolutely nothing before that point suggests any romantic notions), while Steve got complete makeover and huge additional content.
But that's the usual way. They are so brave for adding gay male options what's in other games for years, and almost no one commenting Bioware's "inclusive" stance pay attention to treatment of lesbians. But in most people's eyes same sex content = gay males, lesbians are just male fantasy so why they should care too much about it, it's not the real deal like gay men are...
BTW, speaking about "turning" characters orientation. I don't remember even one case when straight character was turned bi. It was always simply assumed that they were straight since they were not romance options for same sex, not that they said that they are straigth.
When it comes to Traynor, it is showed that she's ony interested in women. Although indeed even without that there are so many straight options that it simply wouldn't be fair, or rather would be even less fair then what we've got.
