Well I've been giving it some thought, and was thinking, how can we expand the MP gameplay, while keeping it still in line with the story. What came to mind, well people generally like PVP, but how to integrate it with story and balance. SIMPLE: The L4D1-2 versus model.

Wouldn't you love to control the enemy threat and fight against the spec ops, where they still try to do a co-op. It stays in line with lore and adds an easy to integrate gameplay mechanic.
Not familiar with the L4D Versus Model?
Overview:
-2 teams
-take turns playing as the spec ops or the enemies (spawn times and stats are generally faster/weaker respectively)
-the spec ops team tries to do their objective, the enemies try to inhibit them, slow them or stop them if possible
-scores are given based on progression, survivors and other factors
-once the round ends, either objective complete or all spec ops wiped out, the game resets

The benefits to this:
-keeps MP fresh, not a one time through the co-ops then dies
-gives PVP, competitive element as each team tries to make it further in their missions or complete them faster
-adds replay value
-can provide incentive for DLC
-adds different tactics to missions and dynamics of teamwork, for both sides
-play the "bad guys" <-- you know deep down you want too.

Downfalls:
-none I can see, both sides are balanced by virtue of both sides playing same classes, competing on even ground, and even if you dislike MP, this is still an optional aspect which like the standard co-op is beyond the realm of the game
