Maleficar was a term originally applied to blood mages that the Chantry often use interchangeably with that of apostate, so I would imagine that any form of magic practiced outside of Chantry jurisdiction would be regarded as "blood" magic.

Even Wynne calls Morrigan a maleficar simply for being an apostate. And I remember reading somewhere, maybe an interview or a codex, but I can't remember where, that the Chantry sees all magic that isn't allowed in the Circles as blood magic, even if it isn't and all mages not bound to a Circle as maleficar. That's the Chantry's official stance.

Unless I'm misremembering.

We know WHAT they are thinking we just do not understand WHY they do or how they manage to survive.

Well, as for why we're constantly thinking of food is that we're hungry...a lot. Quickest way to a man's heart is through his stomach and all that junk (food). As for how we survive? Easy. Instant Ramen as Lazy Jer said. And pizza pockets. And soda.

If "blood mage" is simply a term that the Chantry throws around liberally in order to foster hatred of apostates, I would like future DA games to make that clearer. And, more importantly, IF I choose to have a blood mage character, I'd like SOMEONE to discover or recognize it. It drove me nuts that no one called the Warden or Hawke out on it.

If its at all possible (and it probably isn't but who knows) then I'd imagine only the most learned and powerful mages would be capable of doing it, and even then there might be restrictions to what exactly they can read (they might only be able to tell what emotions a person has or strongly embedded information.)
