I hate going up and down levels in the Normandy SR2 because of the same exact loading screen every single time.

At least in elevators and airlocks, you can admire Shep's face, armor, or even squadmate armor and faces.

When I played The Arrival DLC, I was honestly happy to go up and down elevators

....or rotate the camera to get a nice view of their asses. Yup, am I only person that did this or what?

i actually liked the elevators in ME1. it as really more of an apreciation. i liked the elevators before i knew they were just load screens. i thought it was awesome playing a game that didnt cater to "must. have. now." mentallity that alot of other games emplore.

leaving/entering the normandy through the decontamination room was a great way for me to feel there.

i despise the mission complete screens. never looked at one of those longer then it takes for me to hit the B button as soon as that screen pops up. no idea why the info there cant be shown in the menu screen anyways.

I bet if COD loaded with some sort loading screen cover up, like elevators, APC rides, or something like that, it would be considered
"SO AMAZING, OMG, WHY DON'T OTHER GAMES DO THIS?!?!?!?!!?"

i would agree with everyone on enjoying the immersion factor of the airlock and elevators. what really ruined it for me in me2 was TIM's "mission summary" screen at the end. like, i had a negative physical reaction when i saw it because it felt like i was "just" playing a game.

also i loved earning xp - and seeing it - while i played a level instead of one number at the end of your mission. i think they've brought back that part of it if the "against all odds" trailer is right with the thresher maw.

does anyone know if the devs have confirmed either way if these "mission report" screens are back?

Not a fan of mission reports but if there is one, I hope comes as a window from Sheps omnitool after the mission is complete or something, and you see him clicking through the different mission summaries, something like that would still keep me in the game than BAM, mission summary screen.

I love how everyone is acting like ME1 was this golden perfect game devoid of loading screens, where banter and immersion roamed free.  Let's not forget these:

I fail to see how the ME2 load screens somehow broke immersion more than those did, and those first two were unavoidable.  You act like ME2's load screens were a static black screen with the word "LOADING" on it, that's hardly the case.  Besides, "immersion" seems to be more fragile than Joker's legs for you people.  How are schematics and blueprints "immersion breaking?"

Let's also not forget that elevators and the airlock took longer than the loading screens, even within ME1, they took longer.  My priority is shortness of load times.  I don't really care what they do to mask the time, whatever makes it shorter.  If load screens make it shorter, then go with load screens.

How can you not see the difference... First of all the loading screens you kindly put into your own post are much different because they actually show the game world, not abstract orange interface animations. Furthermore, these loadingscreens were mixed with loading in the background during elevators or the airlock.
You don't encouter one visual style during gameplay and another during loading. You also don't always completely lose control and you don't lose sight of your player character and the team all the time, you stay in one world without a break. ME2 does the complete opposite, very frequently.
I also can't varify your claim that ME1 loades longer, I just recently played both games back to back and ME1 loads faster with the exception of the elevator from the hangar to c-sec and the citadel elevator, which can be avoided. Specially the loading on the Normandy in ME2 becomes really tedious.

Bioware has acknowleged the problems and promised more seamless loading in ME3, so I hope this discussion can be put to rest once it's out.

Because there is no difference.  Both games use loading screens.  Those loading screens are appropriate to the artistic style of the game in both games.  The ME2 loading screens use the holographic interface that is present in-universe, and this is somehow more immersion breaking than what ME1 had?

Oh?  Try going down to the Mako hold in ME1, then go down to the crew deck or the engineering deck in ME2 and compare the times.  The second is faster because it doesn't have to play the tedious elevator animations.

Like I said, I don't really care what they use, as long as the times are as short as possible.  I'd also like it if they minimize needless walking back and forth, as they did in ME2.

Huh? When I took an elevator to get to the plague zone near Mordin's clinic, I didn't say "WTF where the hell am I". I knew exactly where I was -- the plague zone outside Mordin's clinic.

No, I think everyone did, if only because it relieved the monotony.

I have to laugh at everyone who keeps saying that "you look at the same screen all the time in ME2!" and then fail to realize that the elevator ride itself doesn't change visually either.  You can look at Shepard (the same person that you look at for the entire game) or your squadmates (which you get better views of in actual dialogue), but there's just as little to actually do as the actual loading screens.  You wait, and that's that.  I for one would like to minimize waiting time, and fill it with interesting gameplay.  Don't really care what that gameplay is.  Combat, dialogue, mini-games, vehicle driving, boning your LI, whatever.  Just reduce the load times and I'll be happy.

If there was a rapid transit station at the docks, things wouldn't have been half as annoying. Having to do that elevator trip to C-Sec after going through decontamination just seemed like a gratuitous annoyance

First time I played the game fresh out of ME1, hearing some complaints about the mission reports, I did find them a little jarring, but when I came back to ME2 more recently they don't bother me at all. In fact they're useful to quickly assess if I missed anything.

Ultimately the elevators in ME1 and the airlock weren't great. They were long, and repetitive after awhile, but they can't just be eliminated entirely. The game takes time to load thats just how it is. So its either elevator rides and airlocks, or loading screens. take your pick. I choose elevators and airlocks, the lesser of two evils. booo loading screens.

I don't need the whole decontamination thing, but being able to leave through the airlock would be nice. And avoid the whole sillyness where the Normandy takes off even if you'r just going back to change your helmet.

Man, this 1,000 times.  I just shook my head every time this happened.  Never understood why you couldn't just walk back on the ship.

I miss the elevators, the conversation and news were pretty good.  I miss the airlock too but not as much.  They should have the party members have some type of conversation instead of the decontamination in progress thing.

The elevators had a place. They provided character interaction and sometimes provided news about the galaxy to make it feel more alive or give sidequests.

The airlock however, was a waste of time that didn't need to be repeated everytime you dock.

That's because you're on a puny Xbox. We PC gods didn't even have the sentence finish before we were on the planet/on the Normandy.

*waves PC master race sceptre around*

I mostly liked the elevators and I really liked the airlock. How does it make sense to go blast off from the planet just to go change your damn armor, I wonder? The airlock makes much better sense.

*reads underlined comments and runs away crying for being part of the inferior Xbox race* :(

There is such a thing as atmosphere. The feeling of being in a massive world/universe
Walking on barren but beautiful alien landscapes, elevators and airlock's all provided that

As Yahtzee said that ME 2 in comparison feels like a series of corridors, thinly connected

I quite enjoyed moving the camera around in the elevators, also loved the squad banter. The wire frame loading screens in ME2 weren't as cool as advertised before the games release.

I removed the loading screens from my ME2 and replaced them with .bik files with the same names, only that they lasted less than a second. By doing this, you get the optimal loading time, which was usually under 5 seconds. I recommend everyone do the same if they are annoyed by the obnoxious orange loading screens of Mass Effect 2.

I also support elevators and airlocks in Mass Effect 3. And make all the transitions in-game, no loading screens. How cool would that be? You know it can be done.
