Gave me a moment to chill out. Plus, it made the transition seamless. I much preferred them over the loading screens, same as how I much prefer the Mako over the Featherhead.
Would be nice if they brought em all back. Would be a nice way to bring some of the things that made ME1 what it was back into the final installment of the trilogy.

It sure was great. I loved trying to avoid the laser.
In the airlock? Hah, I did that a few times.
Other times I just liked watching the laser go over the characters.
I actually stand there in front of the door leading to Bailey while it scans me so I can see the laser go over us.
Rofl. Lasers are awesome.

Hint: professional soldiers do not rest their lazy arse against walls when there is killing to do, they face roughly in the same direction that they are pointing their gun.

On PC the Normandy elevators and decontamination progress took a total of 1 second.

The so called game immersion, the load screen in ME2 break the flow hard.
The problems with Noveria, Feros and when docking in the Citadel is you can't skip the friggin' scene!!!
ME2 has this problem when starting a new game too, wich is a pain to endure after some time.
I hope we don't see this in ME3, because having to watch the same thing for 5 minutes without being able to skip it is an outrage!
I liked the elevators because of the banter and the airlock because it fool me I was really exiting the ship.
Even if ME3 don't have this, please, no more "loading game" screen.

Honestly immersion is futile in any game that is not first person and has you commanding brain dead squad mates. You what does immersion better than Mass Effect? Any first person multiplayer game. You always see everything from your characters perspective and both teams act in a very human fashion which might be explained by the fact the characters are human controlled.
Immersion is futile in a game that isn't first person? Now that's new!
Did you played Fallout 1 or 2 by any chance?
Just asking...

The elevators were retarded. I'm on the xbox, ya know the original system the game was on. In being a part of that I figured that raveling a single floor in a an elevator should not take 40 seconds (i.e. Normandy main level to cargo bay). That's not immersion. There was clearly something wrong with the future when you had to spend forever riding elevators. at leastin ME2 they simply had an animation of an elevator which went as quickly as it should have, then it sat there clearly loading. Then I knew it didn't take 12 hours to ride an elevator one floor.
I realize t this point it's too late and I'm probably safe, but if the BioWare team is to read this, I really hope you understand that continuous elevators were terrible and ME2 did it FAR better.

Oh, and next time someone cites these forums to claim that the "majority" are for or against elevators, remember that BSN as a whole is a very tiny fraction of the entire ME fanbase. Using these forums to make any kind of argument based on what the "majority" wants is myopic and completely inaccurate.

I find it hilarious when people claim the elevators are more "immersive" than loading screens. I found elevators to be the single biggest immersion-breaker for me in ME1. They were one of the laziest and most boring game sequences I've ever seen, they instantly killed any immersion I may have had, and actually made me loath to use them because I hated them so much. Good riddance to those damn things and I hope they aren't back in ME3.

Arent loading screens even more jarring and even less immersive though? Elevator rides are boring, sure, the loading screens werent any better, but at least with elevators youre still in the game world.

Hahahahaha he/she has a point, but I kinda agree, the loading screens totally kill the immersion.Epsilon330 wrote...

If I have to choose between "immersive but boring" or "unimmersive but informative and aesthetically pleasing", I'll always take the latter. Skyrim's loading screens provided in-game models you could manipulate and game tips, ME1's just put you in an elevator with no music and only occassional conversation with everyone just standing still like a mannequin. As for immersiveness, I'd gotten so used to loading screens I accepted them as part of the game, so ME2's loading screens weren't immersion-breaking for me at all.

People who defend the elevators tend to bring up the squad banter as one of the reasons they were good. I agree. The Citadel elevators were the most tolerable out of any of them because of that. But you don't need elevators to have squad banter, and only the Citadel lifts had any of it anyway. When you're stuck in one of Noveria's bazillion elevators - elevators that frequently glitched and froze you in place without actually moving - you're not getting to hear Wrex and Garrus blather on about new tactics or the experience of being a turian fighting against Saren or whatever. It's just you, dimmed lights, and repetitive, boring music.
The other defense of elevators is that they were dynamic loading sequences that didn't require an immersion-breaking loading screen. YMMV; some people like it better the other way. But it's not like ME1, even with elements of dynamic loading a la the elevator sequences, was even close to eliminating loading screens. You'd not-infrequently get them on elevators anyway - screen darkens, [Loading] appears, game pauses for several seconds - and sometimes while walking around, too.
The airlock was even worse, because all it did was play and replay an incredibly annoying and repetitive voice. I muted my computer by reflex every time I had to use it.
...but none of these sentiments are anything new. :/
