It'd take a lot of rewrites to make that book any good.

As for the apology. Good. Don't drop the ball like this again.

I wonder if Bioware just apologized to appease fans prior to the release of ME3 and has no intention of patching/rewriting ME: Deception. That this books sales will actually increase as people rush to buy the "original" so they can compare it with the "upcoming" fix which will fail to appear...
[/cynical]
Maybe I am just to cynical but I do find that line of thinking hilarous.. XD

Being cynical is usually a smart route to take.  In this case though I don't think you are right.  This is damage control plain and simple.  Letting the fanbase deteriate is the last thing they want.

True but you also have to take into consideration the timeline before ME3. Once ME3 hits, fans will be busy and forget the book for a time. Most will finish do a few play throughs then move on to the next game or series. The book updates can conceivably languish for months and then just be forgotten. By that time, it's all said and done.

Its not impossible, its not improbable but it is an interesting line of thought. I know I will watch and wait. I want to see the outcome will be. Will it actually happen? Hmmm......:D

The apology is all that it is, an apology. There is no way to fix this whole thing. There's also no way they are going to make money on this book.

There are going to be people who will buy the book just to see how bad it is and there are those additional sales. I am not saying it will be on the best sellers list but they may make enough money to make it profitable.

I'm not the one to thank somebody for screwing up and then owning up to it. This mistake never should have been made. Bioware knows it and that's why they're apologizing for it.

Good on Bioware for listening, but I'm not here to pat their head and say "It's alright", people shelled out money and got a lousy product, Bioware should be owning up to it. I'm not going to jump in and start worshiping Bioware for admitting their mistakes.

it proves they listen to the fans and know that they are upset with the glaring errors....while i'm generally an optimist, it will really show something to produce a new product not just issue an apology....

As much as I appreciate the gesture .It's going to be near impossible to do a revision of this book. If they want to keep the plot points basically the same there is going to have to be tons of additional work to give the characters proper motivation. And there is really no way to solve the Gillian issue that doesn't seem like a cop-out. Everything else can be relatively simply changed but that's gonna be a toughie.

Honestly Bioware you'd be better off delcaring this whole thing non-canon.

I echo the above.  It is a lovely gesture, but I am not sure how any of this will be fixed with revisions.  Unless they are seriously heavy revisions to correct the many issues and mistakes fans have pointed out.  It goes beyond just lore issues.  Growing out of autism and making Hendel actually the non-straight Hendel badarse of the past book (and not another 'kill the only gay dude of the entire ME 'verse' move) would be a grand start too, IMO. Just saying.  However, I'll wait to see how things goes before I believe it.

exactly, they messed up they should admit the mistake, an apology is nice, but actions will determine how 'concerned' they are with their fan base.....with the outcry this is more of a PR move and trying to calm fears that ME3 will follow suit....

i'll be impressed when they actually reissue deception....hopefully fully rewritten

Glad I dodged buying it...after reading how bad it was on the forums it would have been a big let down coming off reading Mass Effect Retribution

at least hendel's actions and his fall made sense to me.....the only thing he cared about for like 6 years was gone and he fell apart (at least that's what i kept telling myself)

Exactly my point. I'm not going to hop on the wagon until I see the new product. I seriously doubt we'll see much more than a few changes to correct lore. Errors will still remain and it will still be a generally poor product.

If we actually got a full rewrite, that would be a reason for me to thank Bioware.

As much as I would've liked it, I never really expected Bioware to declare it non-canon.

Good to hear a response. But this book can't be fixed. It needs to be discarded from canon.

I am very thankful and proud of Bioware for deciding to
revise this book. Sure, they initially messed up with releasing it as it was in
the first place, but admitting the mistake and offering to fix it is really all
I wanted. That, and getting the book disavowed. Re-writing it means it’s being
disavowed, yes? ^_^

It’s weird. Now that I know this book doesn’t count, I want
to own it and read it for myself. Before, I would think about it and get
frustrated that these things had actually happened, that my Shepard was sitting
around somewhere and could hear about this over the intercom or news stations
(except at Omega, obviously :P). Now, though, it’s like a massive joke instead.
I can read it and take pleasure in its wrongness, because it’s not real, if
that makes any sense. It doesn’t affect the ME world, so why not enjoy it a
little? Like the Cereal Killer. It’s hilariously bad.

I do pity Bioware a little, because they’re probably swamped
right now, and this is just something more to shovel on. But, then again, had
they taken a few minutes to really check the book, this wouldn’t have happened,
ya?

I'd take a deal that left the errors in the book as is if it meant that Dietz or anyone else who would handle the franchise in such a clumsy way were all kept at a safe distance.

But, that's me.

I'm actually shocked they said they would make changes and reissue it. *Hopes for a Drew rewrite*

haha, the time line and stuff, i could look past it (i'm playing a scifi rpg; i'll just imaging these kids are 15, that's how they acted anyways) the poorly contrived plot the rushed wrap up is what bothered me.....i likened it to a school paper that you needed to get to 1000 words on, and you got to the last paragraph to wrap it up and realized you only needed 10 more words...

No way to really know which of us is right on that. Seems pretty unlikely Bioware is ever going to tell us one way or the other.

The thing with Deception is that each problem, by itself is not a big issue and could be explained away or have a simple correction. I could buy a cure for less serious forms of autism that was possible now that Gillian wasn't on those Cerberus drugs. Teenagers having sudden personality changes like Nick isn't exactly a new phenomenon. Kai Leng on the batarian homeworld....well rich people can get away with anything with a big enough bribe right? All the lore stuff like drive cores and a volus without a mask on can be simply corrected in a revision. I wouldn't even mind the so called "pointlessness" of the plot if the journey was well done.

But it isn't. none of those problems is addressed. And all but the simple lore stuff will be hard to correct without a complete rewrite starting with nothing more than the most basic one page outline.
