Share the blame as much as you can, sure, but the fact is Dietz liberally made things up or was quick to fill in holes that weren't there. He could have researched better. Or hell, he could have just as easily sent a text to someone who would have known the answer.

If HE was committed to the quality of the work, he'd have wanted to make sure he got it right.

I'm disappointed that Bioware let this go to print, but I'm shocked that a writer would be this careless.

To what end? IF he had a question about something, it only makes sense for him to ask a question, but maybe he misunderstood some of the basic facts, and therefore would never ask the question, which means it was up to the editor/Bioware to correct the problem

Hendel's sexuality could be an example of this. I only read through the book once, and I totally forgot that the character was gay until someone made a stink about it. Drew never went on about the character being gay; never went beyond saying only that Hendel found men attractive. It totally seems plausible that Dietz overlooked Hendel being gay, which is evident about the so-called consistency problem: Hendel and Anderson watching Asari dancers. It is such a laughably small problem that I was surprised when I actually learned what it was. Here I thought that Hendel was sticking credit chits in an Asari dancer's thong, and hitting on everything with two legs and boobs.

It is clear that Dietz never intended to retecon Hendel's sexuality, and if the editors and Bioware actually cared to read the book then that one sentence, and the other mistakes could have been easily corrected.

To quote the book:

"I'm starting to think you two are more then just friends," Jiro said darkly.

Kahlee actually laughed out loud. She saw Jiro stiffen, and he turned away from her.

"I'm sorry," she said, wrapping a comforting arm around his shoulder. "I didn't mean to laugh. But trust me, I'm not Hendal's type. You might be, though."

I'm willing to give him a pass on things that can be subjective (like the Citadel being star-shaped), but when it comes to having a Volus with an exposed head, or claiming Quarians wear their suits for decorative purposes, it's a disgusting lack of research.  And seeing as the characters in the books are established, having a very percise timeline and accurate history aren't subjective.. it's a requirement.

As i said, I'm not saying Bioware is innocent.  They're far from it.  But as a professional writer, who, i'm assuming, takes pride in his craft, it's pretty clear he didn't do the leg work.  It's shockingly unprofessional.

About the quarian thing, they DO wear their clothing decoratively, to underline their individualities. It's him not mentioning any type of exo suit UNDER all those garments which bothered me.

Nothing compared to the heavy artillery errors, of course.

How do you 'work your way through' a Call of Duty game? SP takes what, half an hour?

Believe it or not, but the COD games can actually be pretty difficult for people who don't play a whole lot of games. Even on recruit.

Almost every book I've ever read had an editor and a publisher. Does that mean that the author is completely devoid of responsibility if his writing is terrible? Seems like that's not quite right.

That's not what I'm saying.

You were one of the people who tore the book a new one in that 400 pages thread. You know how bad it is, and so do I. I never EVER said, that the writing was good. Never. What I've been saying the entire time, is that Bioware should have fixed these mistakes. He's a freelance writer, so it's pretty much a given that there's going to be mistakes. Bioware should have found these, before sending the book of to the print. They're as much responsible for the book as he is.

I don't think they had to time to check. Casey looks like the living dead right now which is a pretty clear estamate to how tired the team is finishing ME3.
Dietzisstill at fault for his poor research. He has web sites of people thatcould of helped him.

Well if they don't even have time to proof read the damn thing, maybe they shouldn't release it.

I'm pretty sure there was a contract with the publisher that prevented that.

I honestly am more surprised that according to this, that novel should have been done a year ago.

This is a great point. Why did they need to release it? Nothing in the story is at all important to ME3. And if it was a money grab, then that was completely blown up by the quality of the book. What a mistake that was.

Seems like it would not have been a big deal to push it a couple of months.

Bioware will just need to have Drew rewrite this book. Forget editing. Pretend it never happened and start from scratch.

Probably because the publisher was entitled to an ME novel under a contract.  It's possible there was a cancellation clause, but who knows what the terms were.

It DID get postponed for two months. Along with the game. Remember?

So that's another argument in their favor, blasted to bits... I really want to know WHAT HAPPENED.

I'm pretty sure they knew it was terrible.  Don't see how they couldn't have.  I'm guessing they were just hoping the thing would break even and then die quietly, after which it would just be ignored by all concerned.

Why do people keep bringing up Revan as though Bioware were responsible for it? If you didn't like it, blame Lucasfilm for approving it. They're the ones who handle the EU novels. Just look at the copyright page.

Yea I don't understand this at all, Revan was at least well written and the problems people complain about the novel weren't even Drew's fault. With "Revan" Drew's hands were tied to the canon already established with KOTOR II as well as the then upcoming SWTOR. So when people complain about things like "where is Carth, Mission, Bastilla?" It means they never played KOTOR II as the game explcitly states that Revan went into the Unknown Regions alone later follwed by the Exile and thanks to SWTOR we already knew that he failed.

So basically Drew was hand tied to write a novel that connected all of these established plot points as well as being a lead in for SWTOR. And for the most part I thought he did a good job.

Deception has no such restrictions and is just a poorly written mess of a novel.

My guess would be that the delay happened because someone went "Hey, did no one tell you that armageddon was scheduled for 2186"? So they had to fix the story to take place before the reapers, but they couldn't do anything about Gillian and Nick being 18 without rewriting the whole damn thing..

Casey tweeted on August 11th that he did his final review of Deception. 5 and a half months before release.

Running out of time wasn't the problem.

Yeah, an apology from him doesn't say much, as he's unlikely to ever be given any work by Bioware again.

Dunno, after Revan and Deception? It's not like they're looking for high quality writing that follows the universe, just jumbled words thrown onto a page with a few references here or there.

Revan was written by Drew K. not Dietz

Yeah even if you believe as I do that those tweets didn't come from Casey, SOMEONE reviewed the thing during that time frame.

He wasn't suggesting otherwise. I believe he was saying that in his opinion, neither was very good.

I suspect this as well. Not 100% convinced Casey personally conducted the final review.
