I say everyone gets a refund, Karpyshyn rewrites the whole damn thing.

Dietz should not have even gotten chosen to write about a series he knows little about. Look at the Thrawn series, the author was a big time fan and was still managed by lucasarts so that he did not go all over the place with the story which he has said later he was thankful for. You can't have a super fan write a book nor can you have a complete random who has little experience with the series which already has 3 books. It is Bioware's fault for allowing this to even make it to print. Dietz even said in a link posted here he just had a crash course in the series when asked to write it.

The book itself is all Dietz, but it being published is all Bioware. - Unless Bioware have suddenly decided they no longer give a **** about the ME franchise, ( which isn't totally unlikely given how rubbish ME2 was - hey, my opinion, deal with it. ) Then this book shouldn't have even made it past the synopsis stage.

Looking at Dietz's publication history he shouldn't have even been in the running for writing this book in the first place.

He's a hack that writes pisspoor, woefully inacurate fanfiction who somehow manages to keep getting them published.

At some point, somebody at Bioware must have had the final approval. At some point somebody went - "Oh, this is a good read let's publish it."

Whoever that person was, he/she needs a serious talking to.

With respect, I've seen fanfiction written with a greater amount of research than this, and their authors don't even get paid. You don't need to work for years with the BioWare team to avoid stepping on other writers' toes.

As others have pointed out anyone writing fan ficiton is already pretty heavily invested in the source material. And I did say that the fact that he clearly hadn't read the books preceding his was on him.

But the point of my post was that once his writing was done, we should never have seen it. Ever.

His writing, his lack of research is .... whatever... compared to the fact that someone allowed this to be published. That is the real **** up.

Yeah even if you believe as I do that those tweets didn't come from Casey, SOMEONE reviewed the thing during that time frame.

I suspect this as well. Not 100% convinced Casey personally conducted the final review.

All this debating about whose more responsible, Dietz or the fools who cleared his work, is fairly pointless; both are equally guilty for practically the same reasons:

It was Dietz's responsibility to create a story that adhered to the Mass Effect universe's feel and themes, and one that also followed the continuity of the previous novels. He failed, and quite miserably, at doing either. (Happy Bowls, Gyrocycles, rickshaws, Gillian's autism, Kai's no longer a racist, etc.)

And it was the editor's job to make sure that such mistakes were caught and fixed. Which, obviously, did not happen.

Oh, and *Insert random, but totally understandable Origin bashing*

Also I'd like to say well done to the fans. We've (for the most part) kept ourselves in check over the grim period. I've seen lots of constructive criticism, appreciation for Bioware despite them dropping the ball on this, and most of all appreciation of their appology.

I will buy this revised book and try my damned hardest to enjoy it.

I read the list on google-docs....my god.  the amount of errors is atrocious.  I can see maybe 3 or 4 errors, but there's dozens!

It will take them six months to a year to rewrite the novel .I just hope none of it made it in to the game I hope.

From the way Gillian was handled in Accession , I actually thought that BW had big plans for her . . .that Deception was going to be her stepping stone into the actual Mass Effect game . . . maybe not full fledged but maybe a cameo or maybe her and David from Overlord were to be the secret weapons to defending or defeating the Reapers . . . especially since TIM was so interested in her abilities . . . so yeah Dietz writing was terrible and no one edited the book (so it seems) but just to throw a character away that was built up to seem like she was going to be a better/ stronger biotic than Jack or even the strongest asiar biotic just seems like a waste or at least to me it does. . . .

It's a good thing to clean the book up. People should not complain "oh, I already bought the book" or whatever. Books are cheap, and they've already taken some huge expenses in doing this. I am sure all these changes will dramatically improve the book. I didn't buy it because... it's not the same author so I don't automatically trust this new guy (and Origin). If the new version of the book is better, I might... oh wait, I already promised not to buy certain products anymore. But I *would* have bought it after the rewrite.
