We do all understand this is not Dietz' fault, right? At least not entirely.
He isn;t part of the Bioware team , hasn't spent years with this world and these characters. Judging by Deception he didn't even read any of the other books (that is his fault). It seems he was given a very basic outline of the universe and the story thus far and asked to scratch something out.
But remember, this travesty was published! How did it get past editing? Surely someone from Bioware was involved in the process and reviewing his work? Who was this person that gave it the stamp of approval?
Published!
Bioware's apology is all well and good but I'm still curious to learn as to how it could have happened.
And again, not all on Dietz.
I say everyone gets a refund, Karpyshyn rewrites the whole damn thing.
Dietz should not have even gotten chosen to write about a series he knows little about. Look at the Thrawn series, the author was a big time fan and was still managed by lucasarts so that he did not go all over the place with the story which he has said later he was thankful for. You can't have a super fan write a book nor can you have a complete random who has little experience with the series which already has 3 books. It is Bioware's fault for allowing this to even make it to print. Dietz even said in a link posted here he just had a crash course in the series when asked to write it.

The book itself is all Dietz, but it being published is all Bioware. - Unless Bioware have suddenly decided they no longer give a **** about the ME franchise, ( which isn't totally unlikely given how rubbish ME2 was - hey, my opinion, deal with it. ) Then this book shouldn't have even made it past the synopsis stage.
Looking at Dietz's publication history he shouldn't have even been in the running for writing this book in the first place.
He's a hack that writes pisspoor, woefully inacurate fanfiction who somehow manages to keep getting them published.
At some point, somebody at Bioware must have had the final approval. At some point somebody went - "Oh, this is a good read let's publish it."
Whoever that person was, he/she needs a serious talking to.

I was so enraged when I was reading and he decides to kill of Gillian. She to me is not someone you just write off after two books setting her up to be better than a girl who dies via toothbrush.

Yeah. I was like, "that's it"? In retrospect, I shoulda known something was up cuz Journey started playing out of nowhere.

Mass Effect fans have been asking for a comment on recent concerns over Mass Effect: Deception. We have been listening and have the below response on the issue.
The teams at Del Rey and BioWare would like to extend our sincerest apologies to the Mass Effect fans for any errors and oversights made in the recent novel Mass Effect: Deception. We are currently working on a number of changes that will appear in future editions of the novel.
We would like to thank all Mass Effect fans for their passion and dedication to this ever-growing world, and assure them that we are listening and taking this matter very seriously.
I will believe it when I see it. But its something nice to look forward to.

With respect, I've seen fanfiction written with a greater amount of research than this, and their authors don't even get paid. You don't need to work for years with the BioWare team to avoid stepping on other writers' toes.thefalleninc wrote...

As others have pointed out anyone writing fan ficiton is already pretty heavily invested in the source material. And I did say that the fact that he clearly hadn't read the books preceding his was on him.
But the point of my post was that once his writing was done, we should never have seen it. Ever.
His writing, his lack of research is .... whatever... compared to the fact that someone allowed this to be published. That is the real **** up.

Casey tweeted on August 11th that he did his final review of Deception. 5 and a half months before release.
Running out of time wasn't the problem.
Yeah even if you believe as I do that those tweets didn't come from Casey, SOMEONE reviewed the thing during that time frame.
Yes, Something this hilarious had to be impossible not to notice.

It was Dietz's responsibility to create a story that adhered to the Mass Effect universe's feel and themes, and one that also followed the continuity of the previous novels. He failed, and quite miserably, at doing either. (Happy Bowls, Gyrocycles, rickshaws, Gillian's autism, Kai's no longer a racist, etc.)
And it was the editor's job to make sure that such mistakes were caught and fixed. Which, obviously, did not happen.
Oh, and *Insert random, but totally understandable Origin bashing*

Second.
Also I'd like to say well done to the fans. We've (for the most part) kept ourselves in check over the grim period. I've seen lots of constructive criticism, appreciation for Bioware despite them dropping the ball on this, and most of all appreciation of their appology.
I will buy this revised book and try my damned hardest to enjoy it.
