Wasn't Anderson in the running to become a spectre?

I didn't press the point because criminals and scum and even regular people can be pretty oblivious to peoples' fame. Case in point, how many people didn't know who Shepard was in Mass Effect 2? She (YES SHE) was the goddarned hero of the Citadel and was probably on every news cast in the galaxy for months.

Now is it stupid for Anderson to rely on ignorance, yes. But it's even more stupid (on behalf of the writer) to make it so the guy Anderson impersonated just coincidentally died the day prior, with knowledge of said person and said event by the guy Anderson was hoping to fool.

Chapter 03, Part 2

You so missed the chance to point out how Anderson, who might have been a Councilor, would never be recognized by a Citadel criminal.

Canon Councilor is Udina, I think.

And also canonically, Anderson was in the running for the job, per Ascension.  And even if not, it hardly negates the point that Anderson is a public figure.

As well as Udina's adviser if he isn't a Council. And a war hero.

As much as Shepard wasn't recognized in ME2, he was also "very" recognized in ME1 for being a Sole Survivor.

Conrad recognized him because of Akuze.

The Consort recognized him.

Wrex recognized him.

Samesh recognized him.

A report recognized you.

And Anderson I imagine was on TV doing interviews way more then you before dying.

Yeah, Anderson was a prominent military figure long before the games began - becoming the Councilor/Councilor's Aide would have only made him more recognizable. ESPECIALLY ON THE DAMNED CITADEL.

That would be the actual Citadel. Not Dietz's slum-filled murder-box.

Those of you who participated in the war against Deception will recall that I friended William C. Dietz on facebook and posted this on his status about the Barnes and Nobles #6 thing-

Mr. Dietz, what are your thoughts on the rather negative reaction for Mass Effect: Deception lately?

I should clarify- I'm asking because if you weren't aware, the Bioware Social Network has a near 450 page thread(as of this posting) with 10K+ posts universally against the novel, even wishing it disavowed from the lore. On top of that, many gaming websites are covering that fans want the novel disavowed and that there's a google document(Fan made) that lists all the inconsistencies in the novel. On top of that, one fan even burned a copy of the book.

So I'm just curious where you stand on this. Its quite shocking, really.

Also, as an author, its expected that you would defend your work(as would I). But several inconsistencies have rubbed fans the wrong way, some even insulting them, such as a character who was autistic suddenly having it hand-waved off, and a homosexual character suddenly becoming heterosexual. Some fans are offended, and we're put off by your defense of the novel in an email you sent to a fan(said email being well worded, mind you).

I believe the fans just want to know what you REALLY think. Not the author, not the businessman, but the real inner sanctum of who you are- They want to know what YOU think about all this. I am simply their leader- Here to let you know how the masses feel. But personally, I ask you what I asked earlier- what are your thoughts on this situation?

I finally got a response!

He unfriended me. That's it.

I'll believe Bioware is fixing the book when I see it, not before. Just like when Casey Hudson apologized for the bazaar dust-up and promised something new and exciting coming to make up for it, they are known for empty statements of damage control.

As long as they never reprint the book, then we do not have to consider this edition to be canon. That's good enough for me.

Your picture is great. I've been thinking that ever since I saw those two, but I wasn't sure if it was just me or not. If either one of those characters says anything about the gym or tanning in the game, I'm not going to be able to control the laughter.

On topic: I'll take the wait and see approach. I agree that in order to really salvage it, you would essentially need to rewrite the entire novel, to the point of making the plot completely different. I really don't see that happening. But, of course, I didn't think Bioware would even address the issue at all. So we all could be pleasantly surprised. I wouldn't hold my breath though.

Yeah, this is just damage control like when they claimed they were going to rewrite some parts of the script due to the negative reaction.

While I agree, the businessman in me doesn't expect them to re-write the novel.  What I would expect, and would be most painless, simple and convenient for all involved is to edit the lore/continuity/canon mistakes for the second edition, ignoring the nonsensical filler Dietz added about rickshaws and biotic levels, and nonexistant characterisation and weird motivations.

Then, release an official synopsis addressed to the wiki, stating the canon plot points to take away from the novel, and giving license to ignore everything else.

Quick and dirty, but practical.

That's pretty much all I expected. It's not like they can completely rewrite the book. This is why I hope they never actually get around to it, and we can all just pretend this never happened.

I'm already there.  Deception does not exist.  I refuse to acknowledge Hendel, Gilian and Nick being killed off needlessly and Kahlee and Anderson being turned into sociopathic morons.

Right. I mean that's how I'm going to approach it no matter what do. But officially, right now the book is in a kind of canon limbo. So we don't even have to worry about it unless they actually deliver on their promises.

Also, I just went back and looked over the error doc. I know it's minor, but the big "WE WON" statement at the beginning seems kind of obnoxious of us. I mean, in our eyes (and to me), we did, but it also brings to mind the scene of President Bush on the aircraft carrier with the "Mission Accomplished" banner. And all, or at least most, of us know how that turned out. So, to someone who can edit it, maybe it should be changed to something like, "We've been acknowledged" ?

Does anyone else see it like that, or am I just reading to much into it?

You're reading way too much into it.  All but the words "We  won" which are true and not obnoxiously large, colored, etc are actually the statement from Chris Priestly which is the largest bit of new regarding the subject and should be upfront.

Lol, maybe reading a bit too much into it.  But you make a good point that until a follow-through is made, this is only a partial victory.  We haven't won, we just haven't lost as bad as we thought we would.

I still consider the fact that they hired Dietz, let him write what he wrote, then published it, promoted it, and sold it to be a big loss for the fans.  ONLY when we all lost our collective **** (no offense, I'm one of them) did they bother to look up from counting their money and think maybe this kind of negative publicity might be a distraction a month away from the release of the game.

Then they made a statement, but I'm still worried about their commitment to quality.
