I wouldn't get my hopes up too terribly high, either. Which is not to say it's impossible that the new edition will be acceptable, simply that it's about as improbable as "Leng" lusting after a female Batarian. But yes, it's interesting/endearing that BioWare at least took the time to acknowledge the direness of their mistake in hiring this fellow.

I wonder which franchise he will attempt to molest next.

Mass Effect fans have been asking for a comment on recent concerns over Mass Effect: Deception. We have been listening and have the below response on the issue.

The teams at Del Rey and BioWare would like to extend our sincerest apologies to the Mass Effect fans for any errors and oversights made in the recent novel Mass Effect: Deception. We are currently working on a number of changes that will appear in future editions of the novel.

We would like to thank all Mass Effect fans for their passion and dedication to this ever-growing world, and assure them that we are listening and taking this matter very seriously.

Another thanks to bioware for doing the rational thing as you listen to your fan-base.

Just a few questions:

1. Since you have offically admitted the current version is incorrect and is being replaced by a "corrected" version is Del Ray officially recalling the 1st editions from stores and barring its sales from the digital marketplaces? It would really be fair to customers to sell them an inferior product when a corrected one is going to be coming out.

2. Will fans who bought a copy of the original be eligible to get a free copy of the new book?

3. Is there any sort of vague timeline or goal for the fixes to come through?

Cheers!

Hoping that BioWare will arrange free copies for those unfortunate enough to have bought the book.

It's going to be near impossible to do a revision of this book. If they want to keep the plot points basically the same there is going to have to be tons of additional work to give the characters proper motivation.

And there is really no way to solve the Gillian issue that doesn't seem like a cop-out. Everything else can be relatively simply changed but that's gonna be a toughie.

about the best you can hope for with gillian, besides the horrid ending, is some explanation as to how the cerberus drugs from ascension were to blame for her condition.....when all else fails, lets blame TIM, right?

2. Will fans who bought a copy of the original be eligible to get a free copy of the new book?

Fans were warned of the threat before the release of the book. The bsn warned everyone not to buy this book. There was already an excerpt and the necessary documents to understand how it was wrong.

They have made a conscious decision to buy the book despite warnings and against the advise of the community. I saw some people who said : the bsn is ****ing again about things, I will buy the book. They did a mistake, but that was their decision.

I feel sorry for them... :'(

Gabe from Penny Arcade just posted this on Twitter:

I am curious what @wcdietz thinks about all this Mass Effect Deception stuff.

Well, here's hoping I guess. I'm not sure what good a "revised" edition will do, but I guess it's better to wait and see.

Thanks for the update.

This was my first reaction; I'd be infinitely happier if Bioware just canned the debacle all together, it'd save time, money, and aspirin.

*Spoilers*

Not to mention Gillian, Nick, Hendle, etc....

*End spoilers*

The more I think about it, the prouder I am for being involved in the effort and beyond that, the prouder I am for having met such wonderfully spirited forumites who kept the flame nice and hot for those eleven days.

The last time she got a shot from Cerberus it was a new concoction which could explain her change in the book rather than not getting the shots in general.  It might be Cerberus actually found a catalyst for her change.  One theory that is.

I really do hope that somewhere down the line BioWare makes Deception non-canon. Obviously they arent going to do that now, nor are they going to stop selling the book. They are a business afterall and they arent going to bad mouth their own product until after everyone who was going to buy it has. Afterwards they'll say how much of a "mistake" it was and bury it in a grave where they will never talk about it again.

And that is all I ask for.

Wow! I was expecting a response from BioWare next week at the earliest...if at all. To find this today was a very pleasant surprise. I'm glad you guys are owning up to it, and are listening to your fans. Bravo!

I don't expect miracles with future editions, but I hope the more glaring problems are addressed and fixed as best as possible.

Congrats to everyone who contributed...whether it was by getting the word out, editing the Google doc. or just flat out not buying the book. This is a major victory for the Mass Effect fan community!

yay!!!! =D they do care <3

While I apreciate (and accept) the apologies, I somehow don't think this book can be fixed in any way =/

Lore mistakes can be fixed, retcons can be mended, inconsistencies can be repaired, but none of that will change the fact that the entire plot of the book is still completely pointless.

furthermore, not only this book expands on NOTHING regarding the plot of mass effect, it also makes 2 of the other 3 books completely irrelevant as well.

Ascension and Retribution were building up the whole Gillian Sanders thingie and spend a great deal of time developing her character as well as that of Hendel, nick, and many others. Then along comes Deception and in a sudden move kills them all, for no damned reason.

one of them by a stab in the head with a toothbrush.

it woul be easier to simply discard it as non-canon and be done with it, but what do I know? :?

agreed, which i'd personally be fine with....BUT.....if they are only going to correct the timeline and some other 'detail' items in the book, well that really won't change MY dissapointment with the end and how things were 'wrapped up'....

hahaha, my thoughts exaclty, correcting the errors is great, but that was stuff i could look past...the basics of the story and how things went down were exactly what disappointed me...
