X-Com: UFO Defense/Enemy Unknown

Haven't played that one.  Liked Fire Emblem, though.  ALMOST got into Civilization, but never spent enough time with it.

But when it comes to military strategey games, I prefer my tanks in real time.  Helloooo, StarCraft.

I'm so freaking hyped for Enemy Unknown. Haven't played an XCOM game before but it reminds me of Fire Emblem from what I've been reading.

Ehh... I'm not too hyped for the new one as I've heard a lot of conflicting things about it.

However the classic game is as good today as it was 15 years ago.

I still play it.

Incidentally, X-Com is what Cerberus should have been.

Though I suppose they got at least one thing right: the amusingly high casualty rate.

Ok what is it about the actual gameplay that you hate?   remember no spoilers

I think the gameplay will be fine, great even. ME2 had great gameplay (when I say gameplay I mean combat) so if it is at least as good as ME2 it will be fun.

Hopefully the music is good as well.

However that isn't enough for me. I'd rather be able to get invested in the story and feel motivated and connected to my character and other characters.

I don't think that's going to happen.

The story is going to be frustrating for me, not fun.

I'd rather play Gears of War where the story is much more of a sequence of events to give us an excuse to hide behind chest-high-walls and shoot ugly scaly monsters.

I'm personally am looking more forward to the next Blazblue than ME3. That a fighting game developer like Arc System Works of all things is more capable of  planning a more cohesive series than BW shows how overhyped the latter's writing is. If  that wasn't enough, Blazblue's story mode provides an actual branching narrative with tangible consequences(different opponents) whereas in ME all one gets from their "choices" is just throwaway dialogue or getting a blue explosion instead of a red one.

I refuse to touch anything post Gold/Silver versions (not twoo Pokemon)

I was thinking more Civilization/Total War.

Leaf Green/Fire Red was kinda fun.

Though I resent not having a proper Blue remake.

I enjoyed D/P, but I also realized that Pokemon had gotten a little competitive and tedious for me. Just not the same as hooking up a link cable with my friends and kicking their ass.

I miss those days.

You're missing out, man.  Generations 3 and 4 brought some really interesting new mechanics to the table.  5 seemed like a bust, though.

I was thinking more Civilization/Total War.

Remind me to swipe my dad's copy of Civ when I visit home next...

I'd call vastly different environments, themes and atmospheres consequences, as well as different characters surviving/dying and behaviong towards shepard differently as well as  drastically different endings consequence too.

Random factoid: The original Pokémon games were actually Red and Green.  FR and LG were a salute to that.

Actually, in the right environment, you can still find a bunch of people that are up for friendly battling/trading, and the older games still have a fairly large crowd of play--wait a tic, you had friends?

It's unfortunate I never managed to secure a link cable. The only 'battles' me and my friends had was arguments over who was better based on stats alone "Pidgeot or Fearow?".

(It's ****ing Fearow!)

It's a good way to indulge in one's desires for dictatoring.

Assuming one has them.

I saw the second comment, and wanted to get in on this action...but it looks like, of all things, Saphra and Cheez are amiably discussing Pokemon.

o.O

No, it's too tedious. You have to worry about natures and EV's and there are just too many damned Pokemon.

It was way better back in the day when we didn't always know what we were doing.

You know, I raised a pretty boss Fearow in my copy of Fire Red during my last playthrough.  Didn't know that many great moves, but dayum, Dat Attack and Dat Speed.

Dictatoring?  Ehhh, more like micromanaging, watching all my baby cities grow up, and stomping on anyone who tries to touch them.

Yes, my squadmates, my Pokémon, and my cities are all MY BABIES.

Oddly, never felt that way about my marines/zerglings/etc.  Maybe it's because I could just pump out more of 'em and not know the difference...

NO! Its Pidgeotto

I agree with you though. Anything past Gold/Silver is crap. Stop making more pokemon and refine the gameplay! Nothing beats the 3 original starters!

Well then charge in blind, use your favorites, and screw all the other crap.  Your team doesn't have to be perfect.  Mine certainly never is--I wind up using "suckier" Pokémon because I happen to like them better, my EV spreads are all over the place since I just let 'em grow organically, and I don't even glance at other people's movesets unless I'm really, really bored.

Screw the rules and play for fun, man.

But I have to admit I kind of like how much variability there is now.  More room to really play, make it "your team."

I confess, the original reason for my strict loyalty to Fearow was the fact that it was my first Pokemon and my brother had tricked me into believing it evolved into something 'really awesome' if I leveled it up high enough. Naturally it didn't and the thing ended up being my strongest pokemon, thus to justify this I'd tell everyone I did it because of how awesome Fearow is.

Fortunately I discovered the wonders of maths and was able to prove mathematically that Fearow is in fact awesome (or at least in comparison to Pidgeot)

Gen. 1, 2 & 4 are all good.  Gen. 4 even gets HeartGold and SoulSilver which put the original versions to shame (if nothing more than graphics).  Black & White are...their own games, they don't even mesh with previous versions (that and their Pokémon are all funky).

See, that's actually my favorite thing about Pokémon right there: It's all just maths dressed up as cute critters.

So I get my precious babies AND statistical fappery.  IS IT TIME FOR A HISTOGRAM WHY YES I THINK IT IS.

Worst possible outcome?  Squadmate death by Friendly Fire... boy would that suck.

Shepard: "Liara!!"

Liara: "Ooph... Shepard... you... you shot me-"

Shepard: "I told you to duck! Stay with me! Liara!! LIARA!"

Liara: "My.. .ears... Shepard...."

Shepard: "LIAAAAARRRRRAAAAA!!!!!"

//Liara dies

Shepard: "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!"

It's amusing how civil BSN can be once it drifts off topic.

BSN has this odd way of destroying your faith in humanity, yet restoring it at the oddest of times.

Going off-topic significantly reduces the likelihood of extreme fanwangsting.

And yet, mods will ban users and lock topics for not...

WAIT.  OH MY GOD.

You guys.  You guys.  The mods want us to be angry and miserable all the time!

Like that politics thread.

Although I admit I was holding my tongue (fingers?) during that discussion.

Oh, I remember that thread too; with the BSN all up on that group chart.

You were the one who started that discussion, weren't you?

I was wondering what you were talking about, but 42 cleared it up for me.

Yeah, I stayed out of it too. I have strong views on politics in some ways, and often controversal views.
