I have found my Logitech G15 Keyboard has caused Mass Effect to crash/slow down on my computer. With a different keyboard the game worked fine.

Explanation:
I recently purchased Mass Effect via Steam, installed it on my desktop computer (which has more than enough power to run the game) and encountered the problem where the game would slow down to a virtual halt, making the game unplayable. If I shifted to Windowed mode, the game would still slow down, unless I shifted the focus to another window, in which case the game would run in the background normally, until I shifted focus back to Mass Effect, at which time the game would slow down again.

I installed the game on my older laptop, and Mass Effect ran perfectly OK. Then I decided to use my Logitech G15 keyboard that is on my desktop computer with my laptop, instead of the laptop keyboard. Straight away I encountered the same problem with Mass Effect slowing down/crashing.

I changed the keyboard on my main desktop computer to another keyboard (a Logitech New Touch ergonomic keyboard), and the game now runs fine on my main computer.

Conclusion: If you are having problems with Mass Effect slowing down to a crawl, and it runs fine in the background when in windowed mode, and you have a logitech G15 keyboard, try changing your keyboard and you might fix the problem - it seems to be the G15 that is causing the problem.
