This thread is for people to ask questions about Origin and how it will work with Mass Effect 3.

For questions or discussion about Origin as a service, please use this thread on the EA Origin discussion forum. Please continue to use this thread for Mass Effect 3 related Origin questions and use the EA Origin forum thread to discuss Origin issues or questions. The Origin team will work to help with Origin questions while the Mass Effect 3 team will continue to work on Mass Effect 3 related questions.

Below are answers to the most commonly asked questions about Origin and Mass Effect 3.

1) Will Origin be a requirement to play all versions of Mass Effect 3? (Digital and/or from a retail brick and mortar store)

Yes, Origin is required for all PC editions of Mass Effect 3, physical or digital.

2) Is constant Origin connection required or is it a single one off authentication when the game is first installed. Is there also a limit  to the number of installations available?

Mass Effect 3 will require a one time, single authorization for the single player game. There is no limit to the number of installs. Playing Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer will require a constant connection.

3) Is Origin required for the retail versions of the game?

Origin is required for the PC versions of Mass Effect 3, both physical and digital.

4) Will ME3 be available on Steam?

During initial release Mass Effect 3 will be available on Origin and a number of other 3rd party digital retailers, but not on Steam at this time. Steam has adopted a set of restrictive terms of service which limit how developers interact with customers to deliver patches and other downloadable content.  We are intent on providing Mass Effect to players with the best possible experience no matter where they purchase or play their game, and are happy to partner with any download service that does not restrict our ability to connect directly with our consumers.

5) Is there an opt in or opt out clause for data collection?
Users will be allowed to opt-out of Mass Effect 3 data collection from inside the game. Added by Lumikki: EA Support info: 'You can not opt out of data collection by the Origin client.'

6) I’ve seen reports that Origin is spyware.  Is this true?

Origin is not spyware, and does not use or install spyware on user’s machines.  In order to allow Origin to install games and their patches for everyone to use, Origin implements a permission change that results in Windows, not Origin, reviewing the filenames in the ProgramData/Origin folder.   This is an ordinary Windows function, not
an information-gathering process.

7) Has the Origin EULA been updated following recent questions in Germany?

The German Origin EULA has been updated.  For more information, please review the Origin EULA here: http://www.ea.com/1/product-eulas.

8) Is there a double-opt in for Mass Effect 3 marketing emails for German residents?

Yes, we always adhere to the German requirement of a double opt-in standard for marketing emails.  Mass Effect 3 users must opt-in twice to receive these emails.

9)Can I install Origin, install Mass Effect 3 and then uninstall Origin and keep playing Mass Effect 3? Even if I only want to play the Single Player Game?

Mass Effect 3 requires Origin to be played, so you cannot play Mass Effect 3 without Origin being installed. This applies to both the single player and multiplayer games.

10) If I have uninstalled Mass Effect 3 or Origin, do I need to reinstall Origin to reinstall Mass Effect 3?

You must have Origin installed to play Mass Effect 3. You would need to reinstall Origin and Mass Effect 3.

11)If I have installed Mass Effect 3 and Origin, do I need to keep the install/gameplay disc in the disc drive to play?

Once you have installed Mass Effect 3 and Origin, you do not have to keep the disc in the tray.

If you have other questions in regards to Mass Effect 3and Origin, please ask them below. Thanks. :)

LOL - okay, one question then I promise to go away - can you confirm if DLC and patches for ME3 will be available to download via BSN as they are with ME2 or will they only be available via Origin please?

Thanks! :)

EDIT: Answered over on the EA thread.

A: The Mass Effect 3 DLC will be available on the BioWare Store and you can purchase BioWare Points on Origin.

P.S. Only my personal opinion, but this thread really should be stickied. It's important information people should have access to so they can make an informed decision about purchasing the game.

They have said you can play Single PLayer if Origin can not connect or you go into offline mode.

This is ME3 related. What if this happens again and ME3 players won't be able to even play their single-player game because Origin doesn't work?

It has been stated in the previous topics.  Look for comments by Dmex.

Yes, Origin suffering an attack of the evil server fairies and falling over would only be a problem if you were trying to install and activate Mass Effect 3 (edit: or play multi-player which I keep forgetting about). Origin has an offline mode too so the same holds true if the mighty isp dragon eats your modem or chews through your cables.

From the previous ME3/Origin thread, still hoping to get them answered...

1. . Considering the integration of Origin and ME3, how will this process work? Will it be relatively seamless as was connecting Dragon Age/Dragon Age 2/Cerberus Network to their servers, or will this be a matter of "open up game, Origin Launcher pops up for account verification (local if offline), then Mass Effect 3 Launcher opens, then the game loads"?

2. Will the integration with Origin result in the same problems with DLC that existed for some time with Mass Effect 2, where running with no online connection/access to the Cerberus resulted in no authentication of installed DLC and thus prevented their use?

3. Considering that Origin will be a requirement to run, and with Mass Effect 3 now having a built in multiplayer component, will the protection/anti-cheat mechanisms existing within Origin be active even during single player/single player-offline sessions of Mass Effect 3?

4. If so, will the utilization of custom mods/skins, trainers, and other such items during single player/single player-offline sessions of Mass Effect 3 trigger these mechanisms? As an example of "other such items", during additional playthroughs of Mass Effect 2 I've been using the high res retextures found here on the BSN, and I've used a memory address editor to get around the whole "mining" issue by just upping the resources I needed that way. The whole mining thing to me wasn't all that fun the first time around....on the 4th playthrough it was downright mind-numbing!

5. If they do, will the penalties enacted result in loss of access to even the single player/single player-offline version of Mass Effect 3?

6. Again considering the integration of Origin with Mass Effect 3, does this mean that the EA "issue" of forum bans sometimes resulting in loss of access even to single player games and possibly the full Origin account (including deletion of purchased content) will be in effect for Mass Effect 3?

7. If so, does the linking of Origin and EA accounts mean that the above can be enacted from the Bioware Social Network in additon to the EA forums?

8. If such a thing were to happen, what process of adjudication exists to address/challenge it? Do we go through Bioware, EA, a mix of both?

9. Just to be sure, as I assume it will be the case, will it be made clear on the packaging of the physical copies of Mass Effect 3 that installation of Origin client will be required to install/run the game?

Case in point; Ubisoft has to take down their services, which means that players of several of their games are SOL as long as playing the games are concerned.

I keep forgetting about the multi-player (I'm old, my memory's going) you're right, Origin falls over then I'd imagine multi-player would be badgered too.

A question I haven't seen answered yet.

Wat does Origin add to the ME3 experience from the player's point of view? I understand how data collection benefits EA, but does this forced service actually add anything to the single-player game experience for us?

Will modding, changing files in ME3 directory or chaging registry files intertere with Origin client? What will happen if I want to make changes to language played (aye, thinking in advance thanks to EA renown past) or make tweaks to .ini file?

There has been a number of legitimate questions in the last several threads about Origin, both privacy issues and just about how it functions and problems people have experienced with it. Yet there hasn't been much in the way of answers coming from BioWare/EA though I do appreciate that Q&A #5 is no longer misleading. Thank you Chris for stating that more clearly.

Since this is a requirement for ME3 and that is less than 5 weeks away when can we expect answers to our many questions? Is a reasonable amount of time, say 3 weeks prior to release, where customers can get information from the company regarding the many issues still not addressed possible or even likely? Many are still on the fence as it relates to their pre-orders and whether to reinstate them or cancel existing ones.

Ah well, might as well ask. For obvious reasons Bioware won't be able to give answers that would reflect on Origin negatively, so I'm asking questions with factual answers:

1. ME3 will be authorized with Origin once for SP, does it mean that ME3 will also start properly if my connection is down completely (in SP, obviously)?

2. Say I change some hardware (CPU and/or GPU). Will ME3 continue running as is, or will it need to be reinstalled and re-authed for the new hardware?

So it's like Steam when you can't play their games without the client.

I'm ok with this.

These were aswered in the previous thread..... the answer for both was yes.
