Questions and answers on how Mass Effect 3 and Origin will work

- Is Origin allowing games bought abroad to be registered as the foreign version or will it enforce the local version where the user resides?
- When Origin shuts down, will EA provide users with means to still activate and run their games? I.e. I still have games that are about 15 years old and can still be run. Will the same hold true for ME3.

From the Origin FAQ: (Note answering other questions as well.)
Q: Can I re-download my games in general?
A: If you need to, yes. Please note that your games already installed via the previous EA Download Manager are safe, sound, and work in exactly the same way via Origin.
Q: Is there a limit to the number of computers on which I can install my game?
A: Origin enables you to access your games from any PC, anytime, anywhere. Should you have an issue, contact Origin Support and we'll get you fixed right up!
Q: Will my game download ever expire?
A: Your game downloadsdon’texpire. Ever.
Q: Do I need to be online to play my games?
A: You don't need to be online to play your games, unless the specific game requires it for multiplayer components.
Q: What happens if EA goes out of business?
A: Origin is powered by EA, the leading publisher of the world's best games, and we're not going away anytime soon.

Will my game save be able to be imported into ME3 because of this? I don't want to have to (and WON'T) rebuy two games I already own to take part in an imporant selling feature of the game just because I didn't buy the games from the service that I'm being forced to use now (and let's be honest; I don't think it's because of DLC issues that EA is forcing Origin on us. It's because they want to bypass the "Steam sales" thing and charge us as much as they want for the games).
In other words, will ME Steam saves work with ME3 Origin?

Okay, this is a question I have about Origin, because I've played both ME1 and 2 via Steam.

Save games are not linked to the client you purchased the games from so you can import your save no matter what version of ME1 or ME2 you have.

A question I haven't seen answered yet.
Wat does Origin add to the ME3 experience from the player's point of view? I understand how data collection benefits EA, but does this forced service actually add anything to the single-player game experience for us?
This is the question I have. Because with no desire or intent to play multiplayer as far as I can tell the only benefit I get from it is that it takes up harddrive space and uses up resources.

What kind of answer is this?
Microsoft, Major League Baseball and many others are shutting down their DRM services with customers losing access to their bought merchandise. Then EA comes around and says "We are to big to fail?" with a new product that offers no advantage over the competion and relies on the goodwill of their shareholders.
So the question still stands, what happends when Origin shuts down?

Hopefully Bioware will see the light on this and release a patch to allow people to play without Origin eventually.

Ah well, might as well ask. For obvious reasons Bioware won't be able to give answers that would reflect on Origin negatively, so I'm asking questions with factual answers:
1. ME3 will be authorized with Origin once for SP, does it mean that ME3 will also start properly if my connection is down completely (in SP, obviously)?
2. Say I change some hardware (CPU and/or GPU). Will ME3 continue running as is, or will it need to be reinstalled and re-authed for the new hardware?
These were aswered in the previous thread..... the answer for both was yes.
'Yes' doesn't answer question 2 since it was posed as a 'this or that' question.

Best to see it like Steam were you can use the Origin Overlay to chat with friends if you are online or quickly check websites without needing to Alt-Tab out of the game (which is handy for people that have systems that like to crash when they do this).
But mainly it acts as the DRM though it is a lot better when compared to Securom which has limited installs or UBI-softs DRM which requires constant internet connection even to play SP games.

Then yes the game will continue running if you change hardware if you want to expand on it.

Frankly the answer is already built into Origin. It has an option for you to save the install files onto your hard drive, you can then transfer the files to a DVD or or storage medium giving you a copy so you don't need to re download the software again.

There is also an offline activation feature build into Origin? Otherwise I don't see a way to activate a game when the Origin is not available anymore.

I suppose if I were doing any of that stuff that would be fine. I dont use Steam. I dont have anyone on Steam or Origin to chat with. Nor do I want to, which is why Im enjoying a single player game and not a multiplayer game. So for me or someone like me (and I dont think Im all that unusual in my gaming habits) Origin doesnt enhance my experience in any way. It is literally a waste of harddrive space and extra hoops to jump through. So my question is, "why?"

they did kind of answer it pupu, just not in a direct way. the answer is we're screwed
Reminds me of direct2drive. "Download Now. Own Forever". After their transition to gamefly every Prima Guide is not available anymore and out of 12 games I bough there I have one left in my library.

Only when it works like it should. I always tell Origin to save my installer files and it rarely does and, even less frequently, work when I try to use them.
Also according to any number of EA tech support chats I've had in the last year their official response is always that you have to re-download every single time you want to reinstall a game.

That's odd. The feature has worked for me without any problems.

no use if you cant activate it, or it tries to launch a service that is down or no longer able to be used
Well this is too broad a question as this can affect any service or game that requires online Activation no matter who from (EA, Activision, Valve, Square-Enix, ETC)
However EA did remove the SecureRom activation of the PC version of Mass Effect 1 so it shows they can give support to change how games are activated.
But again the question is if it's possible for the company to go out of business..... it is possible.... but honestly it's not happenning anytime in the forseeable future.

which of course they have a way out of it in the EULA/tos
i worry about this with ME3 too. im going to purchase these things, all this dlc, am i going to be able to use it when i want? or am i going to get hit with something unable to connect or authorize?

Origin is no company, it's a service created by EA. Why should one have more faith in EA not shutting down one of their new, still flawed and mediocre service as i.e. compared to Microsoft (43 times more valueable than EA)?

its not as much going out of business as it is them not wanting to fix broken things. EA has this problem of providing crappy service. there are a bunch of bugs in me2 & dlc they are not fixing, one thing is the cerberus network not able to connect bug. there will come a time where it will not connect at all, good luck authorizing that DLC
which of course they have a way out of it in the EULA/tos

I recently in last few weeks bought all the story DLC for ME2 (bar couple already had) and have had zero bugs or problems with using any. Maybe I'm lucky or maybe not I do not know but no bug found when I bought and used them.
To be honest have had no bugs at all with ME2 except I had a corrupt save file which stopped ME2 loading, deleted it and worked fine again (corruption was my fault not EA/Bioware or ME2's). Had one bug with ME1 however which was the elevator one and hadn't saved prior. Googling how to bypass it using console command after had encountered it wasn't much help at the time while stuck in the elevator but now I have found answer even that bug is nothing anymore since no longer can stop me continuing playing.
Honestly I would say stop worrying about it because until it happens it is not an issue, if it happens people will complain and it will be fixed by Bioware/EA. No point living your life in fear of what might happen in ME3 when hasn't happened in ME3. If by some chance in 10-20 years time the worst case does happen or your fears become true then to be honest I will join you and yell and scream and throw toys out pram etc and get it fixed, but until that time I think it seriously is not worth worrying about.
