Even in the Codex and all throughout ME1 and ME2 its basically been shelved as died along time ago not enough information. Most likely done intentionally so they can do what they want. Way too many things to even attempt speculation. I think the most important point is OMG ME3 is awesome and I was blown away by the Multiplayer. SERIOUSLY. Some may think it will be shoddy or that it is necessary, but its awesome and I think they did an excellent job on it.

I'm just going to copy paste something I posted in the spoiler group. Some context, one of the excuses bioware makes for the Protheans looking different is that the race on Ilos (that the statues are of) were extinct before the protheans came along.

So, what? Protheans just showed some other dead race getting wiped out by the reapers in their message to the next cycle? Right. The second beacon you find in ME2 even shows that race being turned into Collectors. Or was that some other race with long appendages and tentacles coming out of their mouths? And then the multiple Species bull****, Vigil says they're one species and there's also this.

I'm fine with there being a retconn, but don't insult my intelligence by saying it isn't.

They looked more like Collectors.

I'm not really sure about it.
There was 50 000 years of evolution and a lot of genetic modification involved with the Collectors.
