SMGs vs. ARs in ME3...differentiated enough?

most people here the perception has often been that the SMG is the poor
man's AR and the perception of the Locust has been that, because of its
accuracy, etc. you don't need AR training (in ME2).
I truly,
deeply hope that there will be a reason to carry around an SMG as
opposed to or in addition to an AR in ME3, beyond the SMG being the
better shield buster. Has there been any relevant information on this
issue?

We don't know that but that is the point of the whole question, if SMGs are inferior to ARs in almost every way and you can carry any kind of weapon, why ever use an SMG?

There has never been a reason to carry an SMG instead of an AR....but I think that BW may have a remedy for that. If you look at one of the latest Q&A vids (
http://social.biowar...3/index/9141980 ), you'll see that there is a "weight" system that affects your power recharge rates. The AR can be made to be heavier, thus reducing your recharge rates...while the SMG can be lighter.
Here's what I mentioned earlier. Weight is a factor for how long your powers recharge. The heavier the gun, the longer it takes powers to recharge. SMGs are great for people who use powers A LOT in ME3

And more weight you have, bigger penalty you have for powers.

I mean a smg in ME 3 can be upgraded so it should do just fine

That's a fair point, so it isn't just casters>2 weapons, etc. but the weight of the weapon as well, good to know.

So we have to deal with weight limit crap as far as power recharge goes . that really sucks so now Vangurad and Adept and Sentinel classes are basically locked into using the stupid pistol or smg as far as weapons go . oh ggod job Bioware for screwing 3 of your 6 classes . then I see no point in ever playing a biotic class since its so restrictive . I might as well roll soldier

I presume that the weapons and armor mods can lighten the load or increase one's weight restrictions. Soldiers are not rendered useless because of this weight limit,,
Also...why use Pistol/SMG when you can jsut use pistol/AR or just AR. I find that switching weapons was always kinda useless.

Way to go. You have no information about the gameplay mechanics, and yet you claim BioWare screwed up 3/6 classes. LOL

Bioware will have to prove me wrong in the demo but its clear from the pic that weight limit effects power recharge so there in will have a huge impact on the biotics classes . but I stand by what I said . they are screwing up the 3 biotic classes if this is true .

I wouldn't look at that way. I think the mix classes (Infiltrator+Vanguard) have a higher weight tolerance than the casters BUT less than the Soldier, which is good balancing. I am fairly certain that a Vanguard could easily carry a SG, AR and HP without any problems just an Infiltrator could an AR, SR and HP. Also, speculation but likely, each weapon will weight more or less. I imagine carrying around the Widow will be heavy so that might influence your other weapon choices. Also Fortitude will enhance your carry weight limit but as a caster you might want to enhance other powers instead. It actually sounds balanced and don't forget all casters are getting some seriously effective powers.

Like I said, I think caster powers will be enhanced so there seems to be good balancing. If I am an Engineer or Adept would like to cast more often and use powers like warp or incineration to kill enemies if I can, rather than just shooting them.

Yeah, I don't see it as a problem, hell I see it as a great shift in allowing us to play how we want. If you wanna carry around a bajllion weapons 24/7 by all means, go for it. Just don't **** when you can't use your powers that often. I mean ME1 Adept was only remotely good with a pistol. That was it. ME2 pistol and SMG.
They also seem to of rebalanced all the 'ammo' for guns. Avenger is 25/250 now, Predator is 15/120 instead of 12/60 for instance. So ehh, yeah, cry more I guess. Hopefully you can dry that leak come the demo/game.
-edit-
@Whereto: Yes, 5 slots for main weapons and you only have to bring 1 with you. So the 'Adept with just a pistol' is entirely possible. Also all squad members have 2 slots and you can equip them with 'anything' you want in them 2 slots (though probably not heavy weapons).

On a slightly related note, does that mean all classes will have the 5 gun slots open now? Maybe I missed some info that they changed it from only allow soldiers all 5 gun slots. Yes I do realize that was a soldier in the photo, but my question stands as if a adept only gets two slots, the power regen time isnt going to be that bad even if they put two of the heaviest weapons in them.
In theory, yes. But an Engineer who wants to wield an AR, SMG, SR, HP and SG will have movement speed and recharge problems.

Yeah my Vanguard may carry just a Shotgun and a weak minor Predator HP. That one seems to weight almost nothing. That setup, considering each class has 2-3 ranks in there passive they can take to up weight limit even further? Vanguard should be able to have ridiculous recharge rates. Add to that I want to spec for melee which has been mentioned, doing so can output nearly the same damage as a high dmg one shot sniper shot.

I hope the lighter your caster goes, the fast his powers recharge, that would be awesome!

My Engineer Lady-Shep is gonna use a Sniper and a Shotgun personally. Maybe a Pred Pistol as backup considering it weighs the least for pistols.

It should just be recharge rates not movement speed. But that would be supplemented with an absurd amount of ammo from a whole lot of guns. I mean theres a pistol that shoot sticky grenades. Add to that some powerful AR's, SR's, narly shotguns and so forth. You'd be playing an awkward Soldier with pure Tech Powers he can't use to often heh.

If you can have faster recharge rates I might go for just and SMG, balanced one, such as the Locust, multipurpose. I would love to be able to do that for my Engineer.

we will have to see how it works in the demo but it sucks that weight crap is tied to power re charge .
