I recently rolled an engineer and I loved it. It's not my favorite class, but it was a lot of fun and forced me to rethink how I played the game. My fav glass is vanguard. Engineer was also the first class in which I took Miranda and Jack almost elusively to every mission. That was fun too.

I dont find the class boring. Agreed it's not visceral but still very satisfying and provides a completely different gaming experience to the vanguard or soldier. Great for replay value!

I think the engineer will get more rep when people who are good at using them in MP are shown to people who play the combat classes. The engineer has the largest learning curve because they don't have any flashy finishing moves like the adept or vanguard. However, in ME3 with the new cryo + incin combo, I think the other classes may give it a try. Lastly, if you have seen the beta footage then you would know that a vanguard or and an adept is basically useless against a phantom so 1 one for the engi's!!

"sh"t, the engineer is here!" "Careful, he's an engineer, he'll kick your ass."

that doesn't quite have an impact as....

"sh*t, the vanguard is here!" "Careful, he's an adept, he'll kick your ass."

The reason I dislike the engineer is because they lost their appeal. Adepts were broken with biotics in ME, Vanguards were a rough combination, Sentinels had biotic brokenness and debuffing. Engineers were debuff specialists. Now they are just another way to deal damage.

Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 has the erroneous idea that there is a difference between combat and tech or combat and biotic. Biotic and Tech abilities have the same combat viability, more so in ME2. A soldier has incendiary ammo, the engineer has an incinerate blast. The Vanguard has cryo ammo while the engineer has cryo blast. The Engineer has AI hacking and drone, those are the only special qualities. A soldier can emulate overload, cryo and fire with the ammo types, and then has adrenaline.

The Infiltrator has incinerate, cryo ammo, disruptor ammo and AI hack. So what does the engineer offer? They used to have the ability to take out shields, stop enemies from firing and disable abilities, as well as take over synthetics and neural shock for organics. Now they have nothing special. You can effectively play an engineer with almost any other class, and most other classes have a better class specific ability.

My favorites so far are Infiltrator and Sentinel.

I'd also say an adept is more a support class than an engineer. Their powers mostly center around crowd control and distraction. The only way to kill someone directly with biotics is to make them fall from great height.

Did you just say the only way to kill someone with an Adept is to knock them off a cliff? HAVE YOU EVEN PLAYED AS AN ADEPT?

Warp bomb.

Yeah I totally borked on that.

I was just trying to say that an Engineer is much more a direct damage caster with it's abilities while most of the Adepts abilities are CC focused.

True story. I'm trying to figure out why people are having such a hard time finishing people off as an Engi. Incinerate for organics and Overload for synthetics? Buckshot for everyone?

I love playing Engineer. My favorite part is

Spot a blue suns merc wielding rocket launcher. Spawn Combat Drone directly behind said merc. Watch merc shoot drone at point blank range, and send himself flying through the air in the process.

Clopin -The problem with incinerate as a finisher is that it has a relatively long cooldown. Ok so its comparable to warp for an adept but there is no equivalent of throw. Also it had no synergy with cryoblast which was a big mistake on biowares part imo. Thankfully this has been fixed for me3.

The thing about the engineer is he/she needs more cow bell!

I like the engineer in ME1 but then they stripped so much out of the game that it just became an almost useless class in ME2.

I was pretty much done with my playthroughs for ME2, but I didn't have an Engineer Femshep. So I've just started to play the class...I'm in love with Incinerate.

I've never really had an interest in the tech parts though, but so far it's not bad. It isn't boring, just a different set of gameplay.

Still prefer Vanguard and Solider however.

Engineer is the first class I picked up after going Soldier in ME1 > 2 and I'm loving it. The havoc you can cause with drones, overloads and incinerates is palpable. And god forbid there are geth enemies on your mission; Engies eat them up for breakfast. I'm doing a femshep Engineer run in ME2 and just finished Tali's loyalty mission on Hardcore; we didn't die once. Zaeed's Squad Disruptor + Attack Drone + Explosive Drone (Tali) + AI Hack = not a good time to be a synthetic.

Incinerate is also part of the infiltrator class - worth trying if you haven't done it yet. I just wish incinerate had the same cooldown as cryoblast. It would also have been good if there was an equivalent of the warp explosion for the engineer say using incinerate on a frozen enemy shatters him sending shards out in all directions causing damage to anyone nearby.

Threads like this almost make me wish for a competitive MP Mode just to show all the naysayers what the Engineer can really do in the hands of a decent player.

Well this game was at one time leaning towards RPG before it became more of a dumbed down shooter. In ME1 engineers were more useful to have in the squad due to their skills.

I agree, mass effect is less dumb than it was before. (dumbed down).

I just started to play as engineer in ME2 and given new insights on how to play it I have to say it is a pretty powerful class, you feel like you are in control of the battlefield. And I can just imagine what will happen once I get assault rifle training and Mattock rifle.

yup, i played as an engineer with the mattock, man that was a yawn fest.  It was easy on insanity.  I thought the soldier had it easy but I think engineer takes the cake.  IMO The engineer is the strongest class and the most boring.  however, if there was pvp online matches, I would rock the engineer.

My criticisms of the engineer are nothing to do with difficulty and I actually really like the class. It's a cakewalk on insanity - maybe thats part of the problem. I think the class could be made more fun with a few tweaks. Dont get so defensive people!

it's an overpowered class. that, plus it's general unpopularity, is why i will make a rockin' engineer for MP. i will be the best Image IPB

It's not inflitrator, but it is a close second for me.

It's almost unfair compared to some of the other classes. I can rip through enemy defenses like paper, distract someone with a drone while I close in on them, and if there are any synthetics around I just AI hack them and watch my minions do all my work.

*nods sagely*

There's something particularly satisfying about smashing enemies / Reapers with a PhD Shepard ^_^

All the classes are useful, IMO. Just in different ways. Fully leveled they're all nasty.

Best part about the engineer? The cost reduction for upgrading all your tech. Which means less mineral scanning.

I love mineral scanning! Very soothing - like drinking a hot chocolate before going to bed :)
