I played all the other classes multiple times before I finally convinced myself to play Engineer. I thought it was a joke of a class with that little glowing orb floating around. I even played my first Engineer as femShep because I thought it was too wimpy a class for a man. Boy was I wrong. Engineer is a very powerful, very all-purpose class with a solution for every enemy they encounter (except barriers) but incinerate does a pretty decent job. I really like the combat drone. Not only is it great for distracting and finishing off enemies, it also acts as an early warning detector to let you know enemies are in the area when you see it moving away from you. Its like having an attack dog by your side. A seasoned Engineer will always have an active drone on the battlefield. In addition to the drone I like the incineration, cyro blasts and overload. I tend to go heavy on cryo attacks because I like the sound of shattering ice. After my first playthrough I was hooked on the Engineer and have had numerous playthroughs since then. And now I play Engineer as a man.

In ME3 with the new tech combos I've read about, turrent deployment, chained overload and sabotage returning, I think people may finally look upon this class in awe.

Now that Overload affects barriers as well, Engineers are ready for everything!

It's in the description of Overload for ME3, you need to find the demo pics, it's there.

Yeah, combat drone allows you to skip a couple hard fights in the game. Obviously some people don't want to skip fights, but the 2nd to last fight on Tali's Recruitment mission and (oddly enough) the 2nd to last fight on Tali's loyalty mission, can both be skipped by using a combat drone.

Combat drone is awesome on any Scion fight. God I hate Scions.

Engineers are underrated because most people play the game to just flat out kill things and classes such as soldiers require almost no macroing making the player able to just shoot while engineer takes time to use the power it provides, in simple words, engineer are for people that are more tactical.

It also allowed me to finish off the Shadow Broker by spamming the combat drone.  I didn't even need cover.  I just stood in one spot firing at him.  The only time I needed to move was when I casually walked over to pick up an ammo clip.

It also trivializes YMIRS. Combat Drone is one of the best powers in the game.

Threads like this almost make me wish for a competitive MP Mode just to show all the naysayers what the Engineer can really do in the hands of a decent player.

Well this game was at one time leaning towards RPG before it became more of a dumbed down shooter. In ME1 engineers were more useful to have in the squad due to their skills.

And Engineers are just as useful in ME2. Even though they lost a few abilities like damping, shield boost and sabotage(which is returning) the combat drone and incinerate makes up for the loss. Now the Engineer can be a damage dealer and not a "support class" as he was in ME1. And dont forget in 3 we get a turret...its on like hot buttered popcorn baby! The Reapers are toast.

As far as the name thing goes, I think it does turn people off (not me though). There are combat engineers, they're called Sappers and they are equivalent to U.S. Army Rangers, except they have ridiculous amounts of explosives and explosive expertise to perform demolition in combat.

If you think of the class as a sapper rather than an engineer (you don't really buff people or play any other support role in that sense) then everything about engineer falls into place. Sabotage, incinerate, and overload completely shutdown your enemies in ME2 and the drone has so many uses. It's a static damage modifier (i.e. raises your overall damage output), it forces people out of cover and into your engagement window, and the drone has saved me more times than I can count from charging krogan and other aggressive enemies as a distraction while I run back to more defensible cover.

The starting weapons are weak for your 2 weapon types, but with the upgraded versions (you do need the dlcs) you can really put out the damage even without shotguns, snipers, and assault rifles.

Right now I'm replaying me 1 as an engineer (originally beat it as in infiltrator and made my ME 2 engineer off that character) with the goal of having a concurrent character across all 3 titles with shepard having a franchise spanning romance with Liara.

Engineer is now my favorite clas in Mass Effect 1. Anyone can spray bullets like a boss but I took Assault Rifle as my bonus and I utilize Overload/Sabotage and spray Assault Rifle in the interim. Blow out shields (Overload) and then overwhelm them with a rainstorm of bullets (Overkill)...winning!

Ok so I finished a playthrough of the demo on insanity as an engineer and my impression of the class so far: feels more of a gun-totting class rather than a 'caster oriented' class. But this is just from the demo perspective, not sure of the custom arsenal you get to do in the full game with lower cooldowns.

A couple of impressions on the powers: Mostly feel the same, although I would say that its harder to see the powers being used (i.e. incinerate looks really tiny now, rather than a fireball).

I'm pretty underwhelmed by the turret though....it feels totally useless. Its basically a small grenade you throw and it becomes a small hovering ball that fires 2 or 3 shots maybe every 5 seconds or so. Compared to the cerberus engineer's turret, it feels like they are at least 5 decades ahead of the technology =( I'm not saying it should be like the cerberus' turret, but I hope BioWare make it look better and shoot more.

In ME2 I played Adept and Sentinel, but now I'm thinking Engineer could be a lot of fun--since sentinel lost it's best power (Assualt Tech Armor) and tech armor is useless now--for a melee class at least. Yeah, I never liked engineer before--they felt  too "one trick pony" for me, but after playing the demo this is the class I'm most excited about!

You can make a "melee engineer" in single player. Explosive Combat Drones with "chain lightning" and "stun" evolutions are great for crowd contol, Sabotage (to disable enemy fire), Heavy Melee with the fitness evolutions. Sounds like a lot of fun. . .Too bad about sentry turret though (I thought it would be more durable and bigger). . . Oh well I'm also looking forward to Decoy. Oh, the possibilities seem limitless with this class.

It's not really easy to judge properly from the demo, but I thought engineer seemed a pretty handy class. Incinerate and Cryo really made short work of those Cerberus goons. Definately going to give engineer a proper go in the full game.

I love engineer it is awesome the new turrets are awesome, drones can shoot missles and so can turrets ,and you can have both out too drone can also shoot chain lightning ,and turret has armor piercing ammo. sabotage looks sweet too.
