idk...my renegade playthrough was engineer but probably because Soldier is just faster and easier and more facerolling...

Most new players want to pick a class that has a badass appeal to them - with gun-toting soldiers, camouflaged snipers, and all kinds of biotics (it's basically magic) available, engineers aren't going to attract a lot of numbers.
Even the name "engineer" sounds very nerdy, weak, and too complicated for someone who's just starting out. I remember clearly when I was picking classes in ME1 how engineer Shepard had an omni-tool and this tiny pistol in the other hand, then hovering over the infiltrator Shepard and seeing that tiny weapon replaced with this high-tech looking sniper rifle.
I'm incredibly glad that I gave them a chance in both games; I like them as much as my main infiltrator now and I'm happy they implemented a tech combo system to give tech even more depth. Ultimately though, compared to the other available classes, engineers are going to be picked up as a novelty class by the majority of players.

I think part of the reason is that something like 50% of the players use the boring Soldier class. That only leaves 50% for the other 5 combined.

Personally, I like the Engineer but prefer to play the biotic classes. The Vanguard's Charge is the most fun and unique power in the game, Warp Bombing with Adept is a blast, and the Sentinel is so well rounded that it feels almost overpowered. I'd put Engineer next after those classes though, as Infiltrator & especially Soldier tend to involve spamming the same boring power the whole game.

I guess the bigger issue I see is why anyone would play Soldier, with its boring bullet-time power that's only been used in every other shooter game, instead of the classes that actually have something interesting to do in gameplay.

Because on normal difficulty it makes the game a joke lmao...I can basically john rambo around with any gun and kill anything in seconds...glad I am only playing Soldier for my 3rd playthrough just to get my paragon playthrough done properly...

The only play through I abandoned was an engineer. My special powers didn't have the flash that the other classes did. With my favorite, Adept, I saw enemies float in to the air or fly off of ledges and such. With Infiltrator, I got right up close to, or right past enemies. Soldier see time dilate and can pick enemies off real quick. Essentially, each of my favorite classes had something happen when I used their power. Engineer... I didn't see anything happen. There was the combat drone, but all it did was float around and shoot. I wasn't really doing anything.

I hope Engineer is better for you in ME3, OP. Good luck! :-)

Engineer sucks because it doesnt do direct damage(or any damage). People want to KILL. ^^.

Very few people like playing a support class.

No direct damage? are you crazy?

ai hacking, overload, incinerate. All support skills. Truth is, noone cares about them. An Engineer is basically a shotgun soldier without any protection or combat skills.

You couldnt be more wrong, incinerate is one of the most effective dmg skills in the game, add overload against synthetics (being the best dmg skill against them), cryo for inmobilizing and the combat drone for maneuvering (getting enemies out of cover or distracting them) and some proper use of the tempest and you have the class that relies the least on squadmates for insanity. That being my experience with the class.

Engineers are not a support class if anything they are the ones closest to not needing any support from others.

Agreed. Try Engineer in the Arrival DLC with that 5 round thing and you'll notice how easy it is to deal with everything despite having no squadmate.

I absolutely agree. In ME2 Domination+AI Hacking was amazing and yes I love Incineration and Cryoblast and all of those skills will be more effective in ME3! so I am not certain but pretty sure my first run will be an Engineer. I guess the demo will tell us a lot.

It's not "cool" enough. And combat drone seems "weak" from the outside perspective. Who wants to summon some floating balls? Well, ok biotics do that too, but alteast they make people fly across air.

Engineers in ME sucks because they can't erect dispensers and be useful to the team.

I thought mine was pretty cool, though Im a bit of a pyro so I was always sorrounded by incinerated enemies which makes things cooler, burning people! he says what were all thinking!

That said mine was less of an engineer and more of a demoman.

I think people don't like engineers because they have lower survivability and lower damage output. You need a patient and thought out way of playing to succeed at higher difficulties. Maybe the majority of people don't have the patience?

I played an engineer on insanity and had little patience for the dozens of times every hour I was killed. I eventually found Average Gatsby's videos and actually got through after some considerable effort.

Agree on the survivability part, you need to use cover and your combat drone effectively if you want to survive on the harder parts.
The damage output I would say can be massive (at least from the caster classes) but you need to coordinate your shooting and power usage well to achieve that.

Even with using  combos with your team they're still not as effective with damage as a soldier or infiltrator.

This is just a guess and someone else probably already pointed this out, but I think it's because most people like to shoot enemies instead of using powers and I find the engineer to be more of a support class rather than a killing machine. I enjoy the engineer it took a couple playthroughs to figure out the best way to play it, unlike say the soldier where you just point and shoot, but I did enjoy it and I look forward to playing it again in ME3.

I disagree, maybe not better than an AR+mattock soldier but certainly better than an infiltrator especially if you consider the increased damage against several enemies at the same time.

The class is OP, I never even played an engineer before, and by the time I was level 10 on insanity the game was to damn easy, I literally stop putting points to my character because I was to damn powerful. Though some people might see it as bland, it is ridiculous and the improvements might make more people play the class.

Engineer was a Low-Tier ME 2 class. ME 1 it wasn't weak, none of them were. It was just...boring.

Caster classes are not nerfed, its just their previous armament and casting abilities were specialized. Engineer might have been the Mind bender for ME 2, but its main Anti-Shield/Anti-tech was superficial when the Sentinel could do a good job compared to both the Adept and Engineer.  Essentially I ould say that the Engineer and Adept were somewhat redundant.  Not true, but you get the impression.

I've done two Insanity Engineers on ME 2, one I didn't finish. Didn't even bother finishing my Engineer once I Got its power achievements in ME 1.

The engineer is the worst class because it can't do anything your squadmates can't do. It's essentially Tali and Mordin taped together; and as those squadmates are some of my most-used anyway, playing engineer would be pointlessly redundant.

Compare that to the Vanguard and its ability to charge; nobody on your team can charge, so by playing a Vanguard, you're bringing something unique and different to the battlefield.

Actually,

Soldier/Sentinel
Vanguard/Infiltrator
Engineer/Adept

This was basically confirmed a fiew years ago by several boards.

I have no clue what you're saying here or what point you're making. What's with the class/class thing?
