I have two engineers. Basically the same spec, I even roll with the same crew (tali and legion). And yes, having 3 drones out on the field is very, very nice.

Because it makes no sense. Engineers aren't commanders anyhow its like the secretary being the chief of police it makes no sense to fallow someone in that job field into battle. If he was these squad leader of an engineer group that's one thing but he's commanding soldiers.

Commanders usually don't come out of Enlisted ratings normally unless they spent a great deal of time in the field.  Learn what you're talking about.

Shepard's class is a specialization, not job description.

I love the Engineer. It has always been my favourite class. I find the Combat Drone to be better than the Sentinel's Tech Armor at keeping me alive in most situations on Insanity. The distraction seems to work better than raw shielding to me. I tend to like support classes in general, but even then, the Engineer has plenty of direct damage options.

Actually,

Soldier/Sentinel
Vanguard/Infiltrator
Engineer/Adept

This was basically confirmed a fiew years ago by several boards.

I have no clue what you're saying here or what point you're making. What's with the class/class thing?

It's a Tier listing based on how well each class performs in the game, and mainly on Insanity.  Soldier and Sentinel are the easiest to play, Vanguard and Infiltrator are great damage indicators, but are entirely based on play style, player skill, and player intelligence and common sense.  Engineer and Adept are the weakest, but thats only because of survivability, damage out put, and power strength.

Area AI hacking on normal is the most fun i've had with engineer/infiltrator.

I did once hack the Geth Colossus on insanity on Halestrom. That was epic too.

No, you didn't.  The Colossus is unhackable because it doesn't have a health bar.

Why do people feel the need to lie?

So a run of the mill soldier can be a commander but engineers cant? Infiltrators can too but engineers can't?

Engineer is my favourite class, anything tech based I just love it. Not to mention the usefulness/cc of the engie's powers combined with squad members.

I have no idea why it's unpopular, I love playing Engineer, along with Adept and Infiltrator. I love my little Combat Drone (hence the sig), and there's powers for every situation - Overload for shields and synthetics, AI Hacking to turn enemies against each other, Incinerate for armour and organics in general, Cryo to freeze people in their tracks - literally - and deal extra damage to them. Seriously, it's an excellent class.

I've always viewed the Engineer class as the unathletic, boring (odd that I consider it boring since I play as a Soldier) class. I don't know why but ever since ME1 I've never picked it because of that.

I didn't even realize it wasn't a popular class until this post. I live in my own bubble, apparently. I see a lot people mentioned that it is boring because it is a support class, but I felt I played pretty aggressively as an engineer. I never felt like I was hiding and just watching my teammates damage enemies. In ME1, I used the shotgun, so it required getting close to enemies, and in ME2, cryo blast and drones can push for a more aggressive play style. Or maybe I'm just playing my favorite class "wrong," I don't know. Image IPB

Oh well, it doesn't matter to me if a large group of people don't like it - it was fun in ME1, really great in ME2, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it pans out in ME3.

Engineer is my favorite class. It was pretty underpowered in ME1, so that's probably why it was really disliked. It's better in ME2, but ultimately it's a class that is harder to be up in the fray fighting than some of the others.

I like engineer because they have options and can handle all types of enemies, whether living or robotic. They have options on how to kill things. Do I want to set that enemy on fire? Do I want to freeze it? Or do I feel like just taking it out with my gun? If it's a geth, I can overload it or hack it so it'll start attacking the other geth around it.

The engineer is probably the most flimsy class there is. But it can also do absolutely anything you want it to, especially once you start throwing in bonus powers. Can any other class handle absolutely any situation as well? It depends on which one you're talking about, but not as well as the engineer can.

I love the caster classes but prefered the adept over engineer in me2 because the engineer had more trouble finishing people off when down to health. Cryo was great but you still had to deliver the killing blow. Incinerate had a long cooldown for a finisher so you inariavly had to rely on guns. This was far from ideal as the engineers weapon choices and gun damage output were poor until you reached the collector ship. When playing adept it was the opposite - guns for defense stripping then power combos to finish. Personally I found this much more satisfying. That said I have 2 engineers and look forward to seeing what they can do in me3. Roll on March and some freezing/melting/shattering action.

ME1 tarnished the engineer and the new players in ME2 were drawn to the soldier as it was familar and simple but when I do another playthrough on ME1 I will be either adept, sentinel or soldier but change to adept

I don't do ME 1 runs anymore, I wish I set up a hex editor or modio.  I'm getting tired of playing that game to change the outcome of a few choices.

i've never used one just because it didn't seem like it could take alot of damage and i like to just wade into the thick of a fight, but from what they're sayin about me3 that may get me into trouble, and i've never been fond of cryro blast.

Because people is decieved from the class name, they see "engineer" and instantly think "nerdy shepard".
I was one of them tbh.
Recently I decided to give the class a shot and found it amazingly strong, balanced and (most important of all) funny as hell.
Best experience I had in game after sentinel.

:huh:Engineer does not equal collared shirt, drafting board, and compass in this case. There are plenty of special forces soldiers througout the world that have the title "engineer" and yet still do all the things every other soldier does, i.e. the fighting and the dying. And "Commander" is not a job, it is a rank.

Engineer is a good class but it just never has appealed as much to me as vanguard or even soldier. With that said I am in the middle of an enginner run right now (still in ME 1). Plan on importing her to ME 2 and have her ready for ME 3 when I want to try an engineer playthrough in ME 3.

agreed i don't see why an engineer can't lead soldiers its a specilization normally in blowin things up not a reason you can't lead.

Engineers aren't popular because they didn't have exclusive powers that squad mates didn't have access to and because they are called "engineers". Simple, really.

Engineer is an awesome class, and my canon (IE, first playthrough) Shep is one. Though he seems to have forgotten how to make weapons malfunction with the entire death thing.
