Its too passive of a class with too many support powers, and not enough high offensive opportunities. Hell, its default weapon is a shotgun, which is great for getting up close, but not good for range.

In my opinion, the Engineer needs to be flashier, and more offensive. I propose putting a high tech shoulder mounted blaster on Engineer-Shep's shoulder, as the highest level of "Attack Drone".

Engineers don't get shotguns unless you choose it during the collector ship mission...but yes, I concur with shoulder mounted boomstick.

It's all in the build. You can go for either debuffer or distractor engineers. Guess which one is good for shotgun wielders/more fun?

Engineers don't start off with Shotguns. In Mass Effect 1 they just have pistol training, and in Mass Effect 2 they are only equiped with pistol and SMG. That is until additional power/talent/wespons training in ME 1 and weapons training in Mass Effect 2.

Just because Tali Zorah Vas Nar Rayya/ Neema / Normandy wields a Shotgun doesn't make it the Engineer's default gun.

The issue with Mass Effect 2 (also the reason loads of people only played soldier) was the simple fact that it was the only class that started off with an assault rifle.

Angry Joe (an infameous video game reviewer) said that he had to go through the same opening sequence 6 times before stumbling upon the class with the assault rifle.

Hopefully this is not a reason to not pick on of the other 5 classes in Mass Effect 3.

It's because I like Vanguard and Adepts, it's something new and great. That what I prefer ever since Mass Effect. I played the others but these two are the most helpful and good.

Who wouldn't want to play an Engineer? Bring Tali and Legion with you, and it's Combat Drones all round. How adorable. ^_^

I prefer Biotics, and running a Sniper Team with Zaeed/Garrus/Thane/Legion.

I know.

Never said it did.

I'm just saying that if you want to have fun, out of cover, with the Engineer class your best bet is to focus on distracting enemies (Drone, AI Hacking, Cyroblast) and pressing a shotgun up to their mug.

I prefer biotics and combat.  Hence why I like the vanguard (not to mention the playstyle of the vanguard can be a rush).  I like tech powers as something to compliment my other talents but not crazy about having everything focused on tech powers so my favorite class with tech abilities is the infiltrator because I still have some proficiency with guns.

Adept is actually my favourite class, but I love Engineer and Infiltrator too. I like the power-heavy classes, and the sniper rifle is a bonus.

I am going to play around with all of the classes eventualy though.  They were all fun to play in their own way in ME 2 and I suspect it will be the same in ME 3.  Though I do have my preferences.

Because In ME1 it had the worst abilities. In ME2 it continued in that vein the worst abilities. I don't think ME3 is going to really change it all that much. Seriously Engineer in ME1 and 2 sucked. In ME1 you had combo classes that gave you better stuff. In ME2 I chose the adept for overall better play style. So yeah... Engineer sucked by far.

SMGs in ME2... lol.

Unless you had DLC you were screwed.

The starter one made a fine paperweight and the one you find range is less useless but the range still sucks. I preferred the starter pistol over it.

Maybe that's why people didn't like Engineer.

Same here, I have playthroughs for all of them, even Soldier, which is my least favourite.

I delete playthroughs that are redundant. Right now I made a new Soldier, but god forbid my brain is fried and I'm already bored of playing. Even on Insanity.

I was hesitant to try the engineer, but now its my second favourite class after the Infiltrator. I prefer classes with Tech abilities.

Heavy incinerate is great, during the collector base it would sometimes take out unprotected enemies in one hit , or make harby easier to finish off after stripping his barrier. And theres something quite satisfying in using overload on an enemy pyro. Vorcha go boom Image IPB or taking out a group of loki mechs using the area evolution of the power

Because people only spam Combat Drone, hence don't know how to play it properly.

To be honest I like the other powers, especially cryo and incinceration more than combat drone....

I agree. I rarely used the combat drone. It dies way too quickly. I would use it as a quick distraction but definitely not a spammable power. I loved cryo - amazing cooldown with awesome cc. Incinerate is a great ability to use because it's SO strong. It's even the strongest against armor (x2.4 damage vs. x2 from warp).

Combat drone has such a short CD it is easily an effective spam power. It's the best way to get someone out of cover other than charging them.

That's just it - I don't want to spam the damn thing. I want to create a drone and actually have him live for longer than the cooldown (which is 3 seconds I believe). On insanity the drone is really only useful for a distraction. Engineer has to rely on his other abilities - which I don't necessarily mind. In fact, I think I would find the engineer to be an incredibly fun class..on the PC. On the xbox, the fact that he needs his abilities (overload for shields, incinerate for armor, cryo blast for cc) really debilitates him if he can only map 2 others not including the drone.

I kept having to alternate mapping. I love incinerate even against people who don't have armor. It's a great cc ability with massive damage. Cryo is obviously the king of cc. Overload is incredibly useful for mechs/massive damage to shields. Basically, the engineer could be great - just not for xbox.

I'm starting my first engineer run through ME1 and ME2 shortly. I dunno, I think its because I find tech powers generally boring so a pure tech class was the least appealing. I've played through both games with every other class on Insanity and vanguard is definitely my favourite.

Mass Effect 1- Easiest class to beat it was Adept
Mass Effect 2- Easiest class to beat it was Soldier

I assume ME3 will be more to the Engineer's specialty.

I personally love the Engineer but I have often read that something like only 5% of playerdom plays the Engineer. Why is this? and do you think ME3 will reverse this trend?

probably because they could use any good weapons. Now that any class can use any weapon that might change. Time will tell

dunno I always liked the tempest with my engineer, then again I usually played in a very close quarters manner but not enough that a shotgun would be better.

also I assumed you meant couldnt

It's more of a support role than a viable frontline combat option...

I always laugh when I hear this, my engineer was one of the most aggresive classes I've played because of dmg potential with powers and maneuverabilty. It was great solo and it was an excellent frontline combat option for me even when compared to my vanguard (though still not better than it).

Now that overload apparently affects barries AS WELL AS shields the Engineer will be able to deal with every type of protection possible. I am excited at the possibilities and now have officially decided to do my first virgin run as an Engineer and possibly my 2nd with a different build (renegade and paragon respectively).

Engineer is my favorite.Main Shep is an Engineer.

Really interested to see what are all possibilities for builds.

I can see how a majority of people prefer Vanguards,Adept or Soldier though.
Engineer needs a bit more of carefulness and tactics to survive.

You also rely more on Squadmates.
