Engineer is actually my favorite class (followed by infiltrator). I can see why others don't like it, but I am totally fine with my tech skills and pistol. Not that I don't pick up a sniper rifle on the way, but it's just a bonus. I have a tendency to play casters with a combo of support and offensive skills anyway, so it's pretty perfect for me. I love the idea of a sort of 'man made magic' too, so tech skills are my favorite.

I know that this has been stated before but my problem with the Engineer was that they were boring to me. I also HATED the weapon restrictions imposed (Pistol & shotgun? GTFOH), and the global cooldowns means that I am out of the action a lot more than I would like. Not my thing.

Where do people keep getting that Shotguns are standard Engineer equipment?

Sorry. My mistake. Pistol + SMG (which is a pistol before you do Kasumi's loyalty mission, or Tali's recruitment mission) = GTFOH.  Only played the Engineer class once and was going based off memory.

I never understood this. I find the engineer is one of the most powerful classes to play and also one of the most gratifying. On insanity, you have crowd-control that can lock down every fight in the game, between Combat Drone and Stasis, there is no fight you cannot thoroughly lock down. Furthermore, with Overload and Incinerate, every mobs shields, armor and barriers are easy to chew through. Top this off with training in either a shotgun or assault rifle, and the Engineer is very likely the most powerful class in ME2.

Personally I loved freezing and shattering stuff in me2 so I found the engineer very satisfying. Unfortunately sentinel also had cryoblast with the added appeal of throw as a finisher. If there is more combo ability with the engineers skillset in me3 then I think it could potentially be the most fun class. The addition of more variety in shotguns will also be a welcome addition as I found all the ones in me2 to be lacking a certain something.

As someone who loves the Engi, yeah I'm gald we're getting rid of the "Lol pistol/SMG" status we had in ME2. It's one of the reasons I think the Soldier and Vanguard are popular - they aren't stuck with joke weapons for a third of the game.

Okay.

The top 3 clases were: Vanguard, Soldier and Infiltrator

Bottom 3 classes were: Adept, then Sentinel then Engineer

Only a very small minority prefer adepts.

As I said (in the first page I guess), I always play as engineer. I've tried other classes. Of course it makes more sense to Shepard to be a pure soldier, but I thought soldier was too boring, makes ME turn into a simple shooter. I tried Vanguard and Adept too... But I don't know... Space magic isn't my thing... I'm a mathematician and computer scientist* IRL, so when I was prompted with the options in ME1 and saw the engineer shepard, I said "Yeah, that's me!". I've never tried sentinel, thinking of it because they sound like fun, but my engineer will always be my canon. I also always play engineer in Battlefield 3, tried the others, didn't like it... Never played TF1 or 2, but I would surely play as engineer.  What can I say? Yeah, I'm a nerd. I love tech. In the DA series I play as rogue. I think it's the closer I can get of an engineer. Think of Varric and his way advanced (for the DA lore timeline) Bianca. A weapon like that is a masterpiece of an engineer, even if the creator himself doesn't know that.

What I have to say for those who don't like engineers: "You underestimate the power of the dark si engineer". If you still don't believe in the power of an engineer, add me on Origin (DiegoProgMetal) and I will show you what an engineer is capable of next week. After taking down shields and armor of an Atlas to it's near "death", a flaming pimpslap will show it who's the boss (unless a vanguard charge on it and take this glory from me<_<) Lol.

*actually, I droped out (of both) for personal reasons, but I'm going back to college in march (it's summer here, so the semester begins in march). Plans: major in math, master in differential geometry, phd in computer graphics... Later, maybe a job at Bioware.***nudge nudge, wink wink *** Dr. Zeschuk, Dr. Muzyka *** wink, wink ***

I think the Phalanx, Tempest, and Locust Spoiled me.  That, or I've forgotten how all the weapons feel again.  Pistol and SMG were not a joke.  Just the concept of having only those for half the game is.

I am not surprised by the class poll.  Caster classes get very boring, very easily if you've done all of them more than twice on insanity.  I'm enjoying my Vanguard run right now.  I don't even plan on using Pull until later again.

Engineer is broken for the same reason Adept is, when you use one ability it causes cooldown for all abilities.

You deploy a drone and then what, unable to deploy any of your other powers for how long and in the meanwhile fragile drone is already destroyed...

Engineer needs a bit more of carefulness and tactics to survive.

Not really. All of them require you use tactics best designed for their class. Sentinel and soldier are the only ones in which you may get away with tanking like an idiot, and only with tech armour and adrenaline rush/armour upgrades/high damage weapons, respectively. Vanguard has charge, but the second you charge like an idiot, you are dead.

If you don't play the classes to their strengths, you end up hunkered behind a piece of cover taking potshots, regardless of specialisation.

As a Engineering student, in reality, we are badass.

Here, here.

I guess Infiltrator is the most popular because of the cryo ammo/viper sniper/passive slow time combo. This combo makes infiltrator the most efficient killing machine, even better than soldier with Mattock.

And all of that combo is completely passive which means he has additional perfect evasion via cloak and additionl power via incinerate.

You couldnt be more wrong, incinerate is one of the most effective dmg skills in the game, add overload against synthetics (being the best dmg skill against them), cryo for inmobilizing and the combat drone for maneuvering (getting enemies out of cover or distracting them) and some proper use of the tempest and you have the class that relies the least on squadmates for insanity. That being my experience with the class.

Engineers are not a support class if anything they are the ones closest to not needing any support from others.

I am not wrong. Here I bolded the relevant words. You seem to argue that the engineer is effective, but thats not the point at all. None of the above is "point and KILL.". Engineers set people on fire, freeze and distract them, or outmanover. Which is fun for about a minute. Than its boring, other classes are killing the enemy instead.

Now _I_ personally do not believe its boring, i play a support class in MMO's. And let me tell you, there is always a lack of people who buff, debuff or heal, no matter how flashy or cool the class is. Everyone wants to play a SOLDIER/mage/dagger etc.

The Engineer is impossible to fix.

The Engineer is impossible to fix.

The engineer is just as capable of killing as any other class in this game. Their powers can soften up or destroy enemies, a pistol can hit pretty hard and an SMG can strip shields and barriers.
The only thing they lack compared to classes with more weapons is playstyle augmenting weapons. A Infiltrator focuses mostly on sniping and several of his power complement this. A vanguard closes the distance to shotgun an enemy to the face. A soldier get's the versatile assualt rifle and every other weapon as well.

The engineer doesn't need fixing. It just needs people to do more than just shoot.

I'd also say an adept is more a support class than an engineer. Their powers mostly center around crowd control and distraction. The only way to kill someone directly with biotics is to make them fall from great height.

The engineer is the worst class because it can't do anything your squadmates can't do. It's essentially Tali and Mordin taped together; and as those squadmates are some of my most-used anyway, playing engineer would be pointlessly redundant.

Compare that to the Vanguard and its ability to charge; nobody on your team can charge, so by playing a Vanguard, you're bringing something unique and different to the battlefield.

Actually,

Soldier/Sentinel
Vanguard/Infiltrator
Engineer/Adept

This was basically confirmed a fiew years ago by several boards.

Actually, I'd say the Easy - Hard Tier tends to go this way:

Sentinel
Soldier
Infiltrator
Engineer
Adept
Vanguard

Of course, it really does come down to which class you mastered.

As for engineer? Meh, just not a fan of the castor classes in general. In ME1, Infiltrator is Engineer on Steroids, making the class rather redundant.

Yeah, no. Soldier with Mattock is easily the most overpowered class in ME2.
