Legacy question

I just completed DA2 for the second time and decided to get Legacy, the thing is,how and when would this have taken place in the timeline, I plan on taking Bethany, but that would mean it had to be after the main quest right ?

You can play it any time you have access to either Gamlen's or your house. There are changes in the dialogue depending on when you play it.
You can take Bethany/Carver as long as they are alive.

If you play it after the main campaign it will take place in Act 3.
