Well, i wouldn't really bother with DLC for ME1, there was only one dlc anyway i think; and in ME1 there isn't really any restrictions on what you can and can't do in a certain amount of time. I'd go do a few side missions and such, just to get exp and the like, but like i said there aren't any restrictions that i recall. As for updates i dont really know, as i recall i never updated and never had any issues except the odd...anti gravity mako (some people should get that =P), but i dont think they even released many updates in the first place. Just google "Mass Effect 1 patch" or something.
PS. The first DLC was called "Bringing down the sky" as i recall, in fact i seem to remember it comes up somewhere when you're loading up ME1 (as in theres a link to click), i can't remember any other DLC and in ME1 i don't think it makes much of a difference (ME2 is a little different).

Regarding the DLCs: BDTS is pretty fun and it's nice that you get it for free for PC. The only other one is Pinnacle Station and I'd only recommend it to hardcore ME1 fans. It has a bunch of "virtual" combat missions that you have to earn high scores on to progress. I enjoyed it, but it doesn't have much of a story, so ymmv.
I don't think there is a "best" order to do things in ME. You're forced to visit all three of the "major" planets in order to beat the game so you won't miss anything major by mistake.
Completing the many side missions is really a matter of taste. I loved doing them all despite their repetitive nature. Each one had at least some small bit story that made the ME universe seem a bit more mysterious and tragic. I even enjoyed the much maligned Mako driving because it made the game seem very vast and immersive (something ME2 lacked imo).

Why is it that ME on PC has a max resolution of like 1200x900 but ME2 PC has like 1900x1200....

Yeah to the DLC "Bringing Down the Sky" It's well worth it. Being that it was free definitely you'll tell that Bioware put effort towards it. Also, you get a great item when you finish the DLC (like Colossus Armor) that is needed in the ME1.
- The other "Pinnacle Station" is fun. There's no story but if you're looking for challenging VR Missions. This is the place to go. You will be challenged and how to think strategically on combat scenarios.
- When comes to ME1 Side-Missions - there really isn't any order. Each side-mission is opened up to how you "progress" in the game. If you really want the "ME Experience" do the side missions. That you may "immerse" yourself into the story and ME Universe. Also, I highly recommend talking to your squad mates - like Wrex and Garrus. Throughout the game you'll gain there "trust" and you'll be able to help "accommodate" there needs i.e. Wrex's Family Armor which will come in handy later...
- last note - wait to do Virmire last...you'll understand

hey dude. I had this problem too. Buddy of mine showed me that there's actually "Arrows" right next to the settings for the resolutions. It's practically hidden but you'll see them.

Where did you find the place to email EA support? I want to get BDTS but I can't for the life of me figure out how to contact EA to get a cdkey for it (the place where you're supposed to redeem your code just redirects to my profile when I try to log in...)

The main advice I would always give to new players is to save often. Save after every fight. Save just before before going into a combat zone, if you are expecting one. Save after opening crates and finding resources/artefacts. It will save you a lot of time if you happen to die.

If there truly is a "PC master race", as has been said by many, then F5 is one of our greatest weapons.
