Bioware, why are you doing this to Ashley?

I've been avoiding the BSN for months because of the spoiler leak, but this is making the rounds on Tumblr today and I feel like I need to comment on it here in the hopes that someone on the dev team might see it and perhaps give it some thought.

Why, guys? Why would you do this? It's a freaking butt window. Sure she technically has pants on but you can't tell me that the shape of the negative space on her butt is designed that way for any reason other than pure sexual titillation, and as a female gamer, it makes me feel gross and offended.

I don't mind that Ash wears a casual outfit in her free time, I don't mind that she lets her hair down and puts makeup on. I get that she's a love interest and is supposed to be attractive, I really do. But this is downright tasteless. Why can't you make Ashley sexy without this much objectification? She's a strong, beautiful woman and you're seriously doing her a disservice with this. After ME2, I fully expect to see lots of shots wherein her butt window is lasciviously caressed by the camera and it irritates me. Imagine if one of the male characters had a brightly colored codpiece, or even better, imagine this exact outfit on a guy. You'd probably think it was ridiculous, so why is it a-ok for Ash? I'm not even going to get into why a certain other female character appears to be wearing a bathing suit in a professional setting. I really wish you guys would reexamine your treatment of female characters in the IP, because I am pretty forgiving, but this is offensive. When I look at the difference between Bioware's two major original IPs with regard to respect for female (and homosexual) characters it just blows me away. Dragon Age is not perfect in this respect but it's lightyears ahead of Mass Effect.

I don't expect my opinion will have any impact on the game but please, just think about your female fans once in awhile. We do exist, and we don't appreciate when you do things like reduce female characters to their t&a or ignore FemShep's existence. My enthusiasm for this game is waning the more incidences like this I see, and I KNOW I'm not alone in this.

Oh come on now... That's just...
Kind of glad I picked Kaidan now. Wait.. does that mean Kaidan also is going to get 'more sexy'?
...I better be allowed to kill them off.

I could see the reasoning behind changing Ashley. But long, loose hair, make-up and way-too-tight-ass-armor-parts?

Yeah, the butt thing will drive me insane. I won't rant here--I've done that enough--but I get where the OP is coming from and I share her sentiment 100%.

Kaidan is going to get armor that features a an arrow design that points directly towards his crotch and...uhh, opposite end.

Still better than what Miranda had.

It does.

I honestly find Bioware's approach to female character design quite childish nowdays.

I personally have no problem with sex or sexiness. In games or elsewhere. What bothers me though is that armor is first established (ie. heavy/medium/light) in ME1 and then scrapped in the sequel. I like the idea of having different armor types for different classes. So I would prefer heavy armor for heavy infantry types to ... sexy armor.

Never noticed this until it was pointed out. I feel bad for chuckling slightly at the sight of it, but I do sincerely respect the comments made by the OP.

Still got Tali and Liara for non-sexed up characters. Thankfully.

She's had long hair, I can understand the justification for using her Spectre status to let her hair down.

Dat ass on the other hand.

Hmm, that is very...unfortunate looking. I haven't seen this before since I'm trying to avoid spoilers too - heh. Seriously, is there a problem with making that, ahem, area solid blue? While this will not affect my enjoyment of the game any (especially since I'm going to have Kaidan instead of Ash), I do question the decision-making when it came to signing off on this...err, design. And I'm someone who's pretty mellow about outfits.

Ugh, that looks so tasteless. I hope there won't be lingering arse shots of her like there were of Miranda, but I suppose I should probably wish for Shepard to ride into battle on a griffon while I'm here.
