Why not both?
Sure both could work too. Two handed spear could be a bit more powerful than spear and shield yet suffers speed penalties. Spear and shield could be faster but not as powerufl and accurate.

Fixing longswords to be two-handed because longswords ARE. Longswords will have a unique talent tree (MAY apply it to greatswords as well, since the two used similar fighting techniques).
1H swords are also being separated into two categories: arming swords and falchions. Also look for 1H hammers and 2H maces.
I may be adding polearms as well eventually, however there's issues with animations and size that will make implementing them difficult.

Awesome project you are working on there. Makes me wish I had a copy of Dragon Age for the pc, lol. Keep up the good work.

What's the context of your research, though? I thought polearms tend to function better in organized formations than the mass brawls that are typical of RPG squad-scale engagements, where most of the advantages are lost.kuroshimodo wrote...
I mean it's not like the spear wasn't the wonder weapon in its day. The spear usually determine a military's might. Well from the research I have conducted. Spears are one of my favorite weapons in a rpg. If they do bring spears into play I hope they will have a spear/shield talent.

The context of my research dwelled in their usage in millitary combat and tribal warfare. The spear is most effective in a organized formation but there are those who could use them in a mass brawl type setting like RPGs. Even in battle the spear could be use up close and personal and could hold back attackers. The spear has been adapted to both organized fighting and mass brawl like situations. Though I have used the term spears instead of polearms I really hope this doesn't jeopordize my arguement, good sir.

Against the sort of armor we encounter (the use of full plate is QUITE widespread in the DA world) a single-handed thrusting spear would have been pretty useless on foot (yes, yes, the lance was used couched in one hand. But you also have a good couple pounds of horse driving it....)
