Like the title suggests, I was wondering about a certain weapon category.  This weapon type are polearms.  Is there going to be future developments for polearms?  Sorry but I would personally love to use a spear.  I do apologize if I am posting in the wrong section or if this sounds like a suggestion.  I really thought there were going to be a polearm weapon class or at least the ability to weild spears.  Sorry for my ranting once again.

I could imagine that it's a viable larger DLC down the road.

Could be. It would certainly be nice.

I also wouldn't mind a talent tree for using Longswords or usually single handed swords in two hands. or even Bastard Swords.

This is a growing pet peeve for me too, spears have been dropped in a couple games now and I'm hoping the trend stops.

I know what you mean Rythuria. I mean it's not like the spear wasn't the wonder weapon in its day. The spear usually determine a military's might. Well from the research I have conducted. Spears are one of my favorite weapons in a rpg. If they do bring spears into play I hope they will have a spear/shield talent.

I'll second this, as well as a single hand sword style for Warrior. Could have multiple skill trees like the other styles allowing for a variety of things like fencers to something still sort of like the Sword/Shield line but instead of having a shield you have a free hand to punch and grapple with, etc...

I have a feeling this is going to turn into a petition, lol. Really hope future DLC will include spears and even the single hand sword mastery.

Makes you wonder what goes on behind the game studio's doors, huh? Well maybe not but I would have thought polearms are one of the important weapon classes in a rpg but I could be wrong.

More importantly, every game that has spears insists on making them two handed, what happened to the spear and shield combo that humanity has used since antiquity?

Why not both?

Hey someone who has the same thoughts as me. I am sorry if I sound like a jerk but man I want to have a character who can use spear and shield style combat. That would make my day.

Sure both could work too.  Two handed spear could be a bit more powerful than spear and shield yet suffers speed penalties.  Spear and shield could be faster but not as powerufl and accurate.

The only game that I've ever played with that combo was NWN 2, you had to spec Monkey Arm feat (able to wield 2 handed weaps in one hand with attack penalty). Unfortunately the characters in that game seemed to forget that a spear was a piercing weapon when paired with a shield and went on to beat everyone with the shaft of the spear. A graphical oversight that made the combo unplayable for me. Call me shallow but I can't play a character if I don't like the overall look of it.

True but have to make it where most of everyone will be happy. I wonder if they put spears in if they don't put a new character that is like an amazon. Don't know why I think that but could be from some hours playing my amazon on diablo 2. Also spears can be thrown so now we have quite possibly three styles for one weapon.

Two threads with me crying about wanting spear and shield weapon tier, hurray, lol. I really hope Bioware considers this weapon choice.

Fixing longswords to be two-handed because longswords ARE. Longswords will have a unique talent tree (MAY apply it to greatswords as well, since the two used similar fighting techniques).

1H swords are also being separated into two categories: arming swords and falchions. Also look for 1H hammers and 2H maces.

I may be adding polearms as well eventually, however there's issues with animations and size that will make implementing them difficult.

Awesome project you are working on there.  Makes me wish I had a copy of Dragon Age for the pc, lol.  Keep up the good work. :)

What's the context of your research, though? I thought polearms tend to function better in organized formations than the mass brawls that are typical of RPG squad-scale engagements, where most of the advantages are lost.

The context of my research dwelled in their usage in millitary combat and tribal warfare.  The spear is most effective in a organized formation but there are those who could use them in a mass brawl type setting like RPGs.  Even in battle the spear could be use up close and personal and could hold back attackers.  The spear has been adapted to both organized fighting and mass brawl like situations.  Though I have used the term spears instead of polearms I really hope this doesn't jeopordize my arguement, good sir.

Incidentally, by the time period most of DA:O draws its equipment from (appears to primarily be the 15th-16th centuries based on the prevalence of plate armor) the spear + shield combo was pretty much obsolete on the battlefield. Your main heavy polearms would have been the pike on the continent, (which a 12-16ft pike would be completely useless in the types of engagements we participate in in this game) with the English prefering the bill. Various other types such as halberds, pole hammers/maces, and glaives would have also found use, however all of these would have been wielded two-handed.

Against the sort of armor we encounter (the use of full plate is QUITE widespread in the DA world) a single-handed thrusting spear would have been pretty useless on foot (yes, yes, the lance was used couched in one hand. But you also have a good couple pounds of horse driving it....)
