Seriously though, if the character can die (permanently, as during the Suicide Mission), they aren't that important to the story. Ask yourselves this, which characters had the thickest plot armor, and you will have found the answer as to which characters are most important to the story.

That leaves me with four... Garrus, Tali, Kaidan and Mordin.
Sorry Kaidan! He was my initial LI, but I love my hamster on coffee. And there's no way I'm kicking Garrus or Tali off the list.

Bioware keeps saying its all aobut choices so im hopeing there are no scripted deaths for any of the characters and no plot armor for any of the cast as well.
VS, Joker, and its kind of a toss up for the last slot i really liked some of the me2 cast.

If a character can die, they aren't that important to the overall story. Wrex can be killed on VIrmire.

By that logic, only the VS and Liara are important then.

His death has a significant impact on the Genophage plotline, as does him remaining alive. Seeing as the Genophage plot is one of the two largest subplots of the ME universe, I think he is very important, alive or dead.DJRackham wrote...

Miranda
Legion
Shepard is (Of course) the main character. No need for an explanation.
Miranda was TIM's former 2IC. She has a massive web of contacts, her father is richer than God, and she's close to Shepard. If her parts in the leak are to be believed, her place in the galaxy shoots up to #2.
Legion is, of course, the only non-heretic geth encountered in-game (As of yet). He's a monumental encyclopedia on how they work, and he displays the inner workings of geth society. Plus there's the whole geth/quarian conflict, but that's not important. /joke

Who is Refund Dude? Am I missing something becuase I have no idea who Refund dude is, where do I find him and meet him? Is he the Salarian who works in the store where the Volus left his Credit Chit?

Liara and Mordin are the only "important" characters are they are the only ones who do important things that other members could not do.
If you're referring to Mordin and the countermeasure, he's certainly not the only person with the skill set to manufacture it.
And what did Liara do that no other asari could? Become the Shadow Broker? That isn't remotely exclusive to her as a character.

Refund dude (guy, man, whatever) is the human male in Mass Effect, who is trying in vain to get a refund from the Turian merchant on the upper floor of the market district on the Citidel. He returned in Mass Effect 2, also trying in vain to get a refund from a Salarian in the Warehouse district of the Citidel.
I am looking forward to his return in Mass Effect 3. He's sort of the Mass Effect equivelent of M'Aiq the Liar, with out all that nasty interactive nonsense (that was a joke).
