I don’t know about you guys but I honestly think the Dwarves are superior. They are completely separate from Humans and Elves in the sense your character (if you create a dwarf) is a true outsider. Your Dwarf will have never stepped foot onto grass, seen the sky and most probably conversed and people who are not Dwarves.

Dwarves also have their politics and they dismiss the Chantry, i.e. the Maker, which play a huge part in the Dragon Age game. The Dwarven culture is so fleshed out and independent it is such a breath of fresh air to play.

The only downside however is the fact 9 times of 10 you’ll be talking to somebody’s crotch.

I hope the third Dragon Age game focuses more on Dwarven civilization so we can take a glance at a Dwarven city somewhere else which is not Orzammer. The Codex did state that there was one more Dwarven city after all.

What is everybody elses favourite race?

You, sir, are a truly enlightened individual. Dwarves are indeed, the master race of Thedas. This has been confirmed by the fact they produced Bhelen, Kardol, and Sigrun. So their level of epic awesome has been firmly established. :)

Dont forget Oghren:D. Where would our wardens be without their drunken dwarven berserker pissing ale and killing little boys, who look him the wrong way!!!???

The guy who voices Oghren, has also voiced Wolverine. When he makes his battle sounds, I instantly think that its Wolverine there killing everyone and its awesome.

I don't know about the "best," but dwarves are definitely much more awesome than people give them credit for. (Especially the casteless dwarves, which I think is the single most overlooked and underrated origin in the game.)

It's actually annoying just how much of the game is dedicated to human characters and human affairs. You get one dwarf and one elf companion (Oghren and Zevran), one dwarf and one elf area (Orzammar and Dalish Camp; I'm not sure whether to count the Denerim Alienage since you mostly deal with humans in there) and the rest is mostly humans. Human nobles, human villagers, human mages, human templars, human soldiers, human bandits, human merchants, human travelers. Occassionally you get the odd dwarf merchant or the elf side character, but otherwise it's just humans, humans, humans.

My favourite race is technically elves, but I'd like to see more elf AND dwarf stories being told in the future.

To play, Humans. (Noble origin is great.)

In general, Dwarves. They're on the front lines in the battle against an intractable enemy, not to mention they made a device to put souls into statues without the ability to cast spells.

Thought I'd enjoy the Dalish elves best, but turns out I hate them.

Each race has its pluses and minuses. If you want a sturdy brawler then the dwarf is the way to go. Elves make the better mage and humans can do it all well.

I like the (DA1, not the Na'vi) Elves the best, I think. It's very refreshing playing an Elven race that isn't good by default and have the holier-than-thou thing. But the Dwarven culture is pretty awesome, if not the best, in the game.

as much as I love elves and always choose to play an elf first.. I have to agree that the dwarves of DA are superior. My favorite PTs were as dwarves.

The dwarves and the Qunari were the two stand out achievements of Origins, everything else was fairly bland and typical for a fantasy world. The fade could have been very interesting but was not used to anywhere near its potential, even demons and abominations became just mild inconveniences and another notch on your sword.

There is no "best" race, but this is the first game ever that I've taken to the dwarves over other races- and by so much. If dwarves could be mages, my mages would be dwarven. (Hooray for Dagna!) I seldom prefer humans- always tending toward elves or halflings otherwise- or lizards in Oblivion, so no surprise there, but never have I liked dwarves so much. They've neutered elves so extensively in DAO in stats (no Dex bonus for elves, but a Dex bonus for dwarves???), appearance (flat ears- and especially with hair that covers them- just makes them look like nothing more than short humans), and storyline (every line comes across staged like an afterthought, delivered like a politically correct ), that it's hard to prefer elves generally.

But on the other hand the dwarves are simply very well developed and presented in DAO in their own right:

- their rockworld of intrigue and caste is fairly solidly thought-out and convincing (despite its diminutive size as a purported metropolis)
- like the OP said, they have the advantage of having an entire "independent" world to which to acclimate and adjust (unlike elves who just share woods or cities with humans), even having their own religion and lore (the elves having nothing at all to recover over centuries?? really? with a ruins just a short walk from the Dalish Origins camp??) that remains self-determined and thankfully oblivious to "Maker" litanies; I love all the language you have to learn, requiring you to learn the lingo on the fly (rather than being given some tutorial character that answers inane questions for you like "What's a Dalish?" that you'd have learned when you were an elf child)
- the dwarf origin stories are the most complex and interestingly worked out (the city elf one standing out as an excellent attempt though) so that I find I look forward to traveling with both Leske and Gorim and feel for them when we part ways and hope they fare well to be able to see them again (wish they could be later companions as well); I don't even feel for my human noble father with all that obviousness, bossiness, and pomp and being tricked by someone so overtly scummy, and the human story is just fighting rats, playing the less important brother, watching your elven girlfriend get insta-killed, and fighting human warriors and dogs... and your companions are a blase Ser Dweebmore and a dog (not a big fan of barking dogs) (though having mom as a companion is fun) and you get to listen to your cook berate elves without being able to fire her on the spot; the Dalish just play nicey with each other and you get to explore some decent scenery in the ruins (which you have to do twice??); mind you, the mage story is good too with the Jowan twists, but it's not a race-centered origin, so...
- the dwarf "return" stories are both intriguing with the unfinished business with Jarvia, Bhelen, and the Assembly... though Rica the Bhelen Pet isn't so intriguing... Lots of creative twists and turns to resolve them and tie the main character to their Orzammar origins; Howe is just a final boss in Denerim, Dalish get a completely different place (and people) to which to "return," and the city elves settle their score in the Origin Story since Howe removes the offending family regardless, and the blase "You're my hero, I'm gonna settle down" Soris underwhelms, so except for maybe visiting Shianna and dad again, not much left to draw the main character back there either; only my elf mage wanted to get there to address unfinished business... to kill the imprisoned rapist herself given her magically-attained knowledge about him... (lol)
- the Deep Roads (hearkening to the Underdark) are long, arduous, rewarding, and every bit as claustrophobic as they're supposed to be... even if they lack the creature development they could have had with all those extra tunnels (just Darkspawn, spiders, and tedious lizards?... oh, and rhinos... heh)... Coupled with the Orzammar quests and events, the Deep Roads ordeal makes the dwarf area the most adventurous
- dwarf 2-handers look the most awesome, just because those squat bodies do such a fantastic balancing act to be wielding them so well
- dwarf shield warriors have the size to really fit behind those large shields and look like armored balls
- dwarf dual wielders look awesome, maybe because those reared-back backstabs look more awkward on longer arms
- dwarf girls easily trounce the lanky humans and elves for looks
- the only race with a resistance bonus, no?
- Oghren's lines aren't so great, but the voice carries him as a companion
- dwarves wear beards better :-P

Disadvantages:
- more often have archery shots blocked by obstructions...
- surface dwarves are blase... too much time away from the Stone ;-)

As to the Qunari being an "achievement..." meh... STEN is great. I love it whenever he speaks. But the Qunari are a rip-off of Dungeon Siege 2 giants (without the horns)... and they're just closed-minded conquerors by DAO storyline with a backward politics and culture. Still, hard not to wonder about a people who declaredly intend on taking over your continent but demonstrably respect you for your capability and determination and will fight to the death for your people...

I don't know if Dwarves are the best race, per se. Necessity is the mother of invention, and an underground environment would necessitate technological advancement more than a surface environment.  By and large, the more challenging the environment is, the more technological innovation is necessary.
