First time through the OC, and just wondering if crafting is worth it. Playing an Eldritch Knight with no particular weapon  speicialty. I would prefer not to take another arcane spell caster, so most of the duties would fall on my character. I must also  admit I am not intimately familiar with the crafting system. On a side note, is there any difficulty issuses taking only one companion?

Have one or more of the NPCs take the feats; it's nor worth it for your main character.

You can have your companions craft up some seriously worthwhile stuff, though, so they are definitely useful. You say you would "prefer not to take another arcane spell caster" - the game doesn't work that way; you will get a bunch of followers, more than you can take with you on adventures, but you will also get a base of operations where you can leave them and have them do crafting in between head-bashing.

If you're a spellcaster yourself, then the 'Craft Magical Arms & Armour' feat could be useful. I've never bothered taking any of the other crafting feats (wonderous objects, wands, potions), since you can generally buy most of those things (or have them drop as loot).

Why anyone would bother brewing their own potions is beyond me - you get one potion per spell, so you might as well be casting the spell directly onto someone. Wand crafting is a bit more useful though, as you generally get 50 charges out of the one spell. Although since you can squat for five seconds and rest just about anywhere in the OC, you'll rarely need to resort to using wands anyway.

As long as you've got some spellcasting companions with crafting feats (magic arms & armour for arcane casters, wonderous objects for clerics), you should have all your crafting needs covered. Just make sure that at least one of your companions has a reasonably high alchemy skill so you can distil essences.

One very useful potion that everyone should keep on hand at higher levels (not the OC so much, but MOTB and SOZ) is Remove Blindness.

Also, when you look into the Crafting books you find in the game or, er, elsewhere,  you will find there are many great wondrous items or divine weapons that can be made but not bought.  And handing Neeshka a Nymph Cloak and a bunch of scrolls and potions of Heroism can make her actually effective in a fight.  Scrolls, unlike wands, can be any level.

Although spells cast from scrolls are capped at a casting level of 11, so higher-level character using a scroll may never get the full amount of benefit/damage it advertises (depending on the spell of course).

I found that out the hard way while trying to enchant a weapon in the OC with the Disruption property. I had the crafting feat, was of high-enough level to enchant Disruption weapons (14), but couldn't cast Undeath to Death myself so had to use a scroll. It took me a while to figure out why the crafting failed with a message saying my casting level wasn't high enough (even though I'd enchanted other level 14 recipes successfully).

I eventually leveled up one of the companions who *could* cast the spell, and gave them the required crafting feat. The katana of disruption they crafted killed the Nightwalker at the keep in just one hit. :)

I consider craft wand invaluable when playing a bard or rogue, and complimentary to a wizard or wizard multiclass. Having Sand churn out wands of no save spells such as lesser missile storm gives a rogue the tools to contribute in fights with crit immune enemies. It's also a handy way for a wizard to lob oodles of attack spells and keep battlefield control, debuffs, and buffs memorized instead.

HP totals are so ridiculous later on, that even devoting all your slots to direct damage spells won't be enough to finish some encounters. Wands let you do that. Plus, you'll be swimming in gold later on and won't feel the sting of those prices.

That said, they lose their shine if you rest after every encounter. I don't for a few reasons. In that case, skip it in the OC and consider having Safiya pick it up in MotB instead.

Personally, I never both with consumables (scrolls, potions, wands). Giving one of your henchmen - I mean, companions - Wondrous Item or Arms and Armour is worth it though (even if not really necessary).

In the OC if you are strictly talking about making the most powerful character, no. They are not worth it. Make one of the companions the crafter and take combat feats for yourself.
