I have a pretty high end PC and have been tweaking PC games since my first 386 in 1989.  That being said,  I'd like to get the Collector's Edition of Dragon Age for PC but it is sold out everywhere.  So, I am reduced to a digital version.  There seem to be 3 places to get it:

* EA store (Never again in my life - Sorry Bioware but EA SUCKS)

* Direct2Drive (I have bought games before from here and have been satisfied but hate that you have to rely on them to update patches for the games)

* Steam (I like Steam but... there unlock times are unpredictable at best.  Look at their recent L4D2 demo.. a day late!  Also, seems like sometimes you can't tweak some of their config files)

I install patches the moment they are released and I like to tweak my .ini files for graphics and game settings... any ideas? Posted Image

I had the steam version of Fallout three and never had any problems modding it (includong twiking the ini and config files), In contrast apparently the Direct2Drive version of Fallout 3 cannot accept certain mods (like FOSE for example). Although I have never used Direct2Drive myself my brother had problems activating a few games he bought from them (the CD keys would not work), although the issues were resolved within two days that was still two days he was not able to play. All that aside I would like to ask you why you cannot buy a hard copy of the PC version?

Thanks for the info back pain.

I went to preorder the CE hard copy and it's been oversold at a lot of places and can't find it in stock anywhere.

Also, I am a freak, but I can't stand waiting on shipping. I remember pre-ordering on the web and I didn't get the game until a few days after the street date. Not cool :)

Get Steam version and you can preload now, which probably isn't the case with the other two digitial retailers.

Yeah, I am debating on whether to start that massive preload on Steam and just order now.. like I mentioned before though, Steam is horribly inaccurate with their unlock times. It's insane because if you can buy it in the store at midnight, why not unlock it on Steam at Midnight PST!?

Neither Steam or Direct2drive will affect your ability to tweak the files. I messed around with my mass effect .ini's no prob and I was on both D2D and Steam at various times (originally bought on D2D, later picked up on Steam for convenience)

There's also  Impulse if you're in NA.

Right, both official patches and DLC, as well as mods made with the toolset will all be compatible with all versions. There will be no difference from a hard copy.

I like Steam overall but waiting for days or weeks for them to apply their patches to single player games is a bit annoying.

I've never heard of Impulse... and yes, I am in the USA.

Well on direct2drive on the dragon age page it says This version of Dragon Age: Origins is compatible with universal patches and the mod toolset from BioWare.

Interesting Fenn.. thanks for the heads up. Hmm, looking like D2D over Steam. I guess each to his own. Let's hope that this version gets patches quick than Mass Effect PC version did ;)

Tweaking config files usually isn't a problem. It's when a mod replaces the executable that it becomes a problem. (Similar to Project Reality for Battlefield 2).

www.impulsedriven.com - they have fast servers( a lot faster than steam) and don't require you to be logged in to play offline games( nor to set up an offline mode) Basically Impulse installs usually act like retail installs.
But i dont think they do preloads.

Personally i wish  EA would have made Impulse an option for us Europeans as well.

Yeah looks like Direct2Drive, Impulse and Steam all have the same Deluxe Digital versions. Dunno if some ingame items are worth $15 but they are good at making me want it. I want that Blood ring from Steam though ;)

Well, D2D apparently does not offer preload.

Hmmm... November 1st still isn't over. Maybe their preload just isn't ready :)

Think of the Digital edition this way: $7 for the Warden's Keep DLC.

Then another 8 for all the additional loot, the Mass Effect/Dragon Age Blood Dragon armour AND a Digital Soundtrack.

If you don't care about any of the extras, buy the normal edition and grab the Warden's Keep DLC if you want later.

Yes, just wondering if the loot is all worth it. Kinda crazy though that blood ring (can't remember name) is exclusive just to Steam. That ring looks sweet.

I decided that the loot wasn't worth it (I would have bought the CE if I could get a boxed copy though). If I was going to get it online, I'd get it through Steam. I have bought a number of games from them and never encountered a problem - I can't say the same for D2D.

Yeah, I think overall, if I do choose the online option, I will get Steam. I don't really know what to do since I have such limited time and so many games to play. Seems like Dragon Age could be a major time sink :)

Well the thing is, the game isn't sold out, just ordered from Target Friday and got a letter saying they are preparing to ship it, it is estimated to arrive Tuesday.

Places like Best Buy and Walmart have the CE too, but they take a lot longer to ship it, but the CE isn't out of stock completely.
