So generally speaking, why do most people dig Sovereign over Harbinger?

Because Sovereign was that mysterious yet deadly evil that ws unknown to many and his voice and the way he explained the reaper's motive was spooky.

'Cause Sovereign just don't give a f**k. Honestly, Sovereign had an air of mystery about it. The whole Reaper thing slowly unfolded over the course of the game, and then Sovereign shows up on Virmire and gives this amazing exposition and delivers the classic line, "I am the vanguard of your destruction". Harbinger was always off in the distance and there was no real mystery about it, whereas Sovereign was an unexpected threat that came out of nowhere and hit you with the realization of what was going on through the entire game. The whole "Assuming Direct Control" didn't really help either.

Three Reasons Why Sovereign is more Terrifying

1: Because Sovereign doesn't give a ****.

Harbringer is obviously interested in Shepard (most likely because he/she kiled Sovereign) which is creepy in its own way.  But;  Sovereign could give two ****s about Shepard.  Sovereign regards Shepard like a mosquito and while that arrogance does ultimately bite Sovereign in the ass, there's no denying that its initimdating.

2: Because Sovereign has mystique.

When you meet Sovereign in ME1, you've just recently discovered that the Reapers exist and the scale of their power.   They're terrifying; but still mysterious.  By the time you meet Harbringer you already know what the Reapers are and Harbringer never really does anything to build upon the initial terror that Sovereign instilled.

3: Saren.

Saren is a great villain and the game does a great job of building him up into a very intimidating force.  And then you discover that the badass Turian that you were so initimdated by is himself just a puppet of a much more terrifying enemy.

Ha, great minds think alike.  I swear I started writing my post before I read yours and I thought I was being rather creative when I wrote "Sovereign doesn't give a ****".

Sovereign sounds like G1 soundwave and when he showed up in ME1 my first reaction was crap (can we cuss on this forum?) just got real. With Harbinger I didn't know he was possessing the collectors I thought he was talking into my head or a speaker or something.

Well according to the codex leak, Harbinger just became alot more impressive.

Sovereign came off more the Palpatine type. Sinister, foreboding, powerful, controlling, dangerous.

Harbinger was more like a pre-teen boy who watched too much Jersey Shore. SHEPARD, COME AT ME.

True, but give the Reapers more insight, make them less menacing, and the possibilities of a command structure outside a hive mind of ancient starships with highly advanced technology.

Also gives possible anchor points to provide fractures in Reaper structure, even the unlikely possibility of Reapers dissagreeing, but so far we've never heard them communicate.

Because sovereign decimated the ciadel fleet, brainwashed the best turian spectre then used him (literally) as a puppet against shepard, and because he chose to stay in the milky way galaxy to unleash the reaper fleet on the galaxy, in other words he's patient, smart and LETHAL

"Chose?" I was under the impression that him and the rest of the Reapers drew straws, and Sovereign just got the short one.

Sovereign was mysterious, creepy, Lovecraftian. Harbinger just kept on hamming it up during firefights. He was just sort of annoying. Though at the end of Arrival he was pretty intimidating.

It didn't surprise me. I've thought Harbinger was the Reaper leader since ME2. I didn't read the script, but I strongly believe he'll be the final boss somehow.

I think the main thing is that Reapers were mysterious in ME1.

I do love that convo with Sovereign though <3

It makes me wonder though, was Sovereign his second in command or were they more or less equals?

Possibly like the Geth, they might not have a direct CoC.  Harbinger might be the oldest and possibly largest Reaper, thus making senior, and taking the power.  For all we know, the Reapers share a Hive Mind.  If they didn't, I'm inclined to want to hear Reaper communication.

Or maybe I need to get this rogue reaper theory out of my head, don't want to sound like a Talimancer.

How does that make them less impressive?  We've known they come in different shapes and sizes for some time now.

Harbinger is twirling a mustache and doing a pathetic evil cackle. He tries too hard to be scary.
Sovereign was just emotionless (save for perhaps one part) and just didn't seem to give a single ****, the whole aura that he spread by not caring and merely brushing humanity off as yet another source to be harvested made him seem so... powerful. Like everything in the galaxy is just toys to him.

To put it in another way, Sovereign is like that creepy kid who always has a lighter and has a gun.. always so detached from reality but could snap at any moment. Scary type of kid that one.

Harbinger is like that kid who thinks he's cool because he posts pictures of himself with a toy gun with the orange bit on the end removed.

One likes to pretend to be murderous, one is murderous.

To the OP, Sovereign was menacing. Harbinger just didn't give me the same feeling.

I don't think they were a hive mind since Sovereign did say they were each a nation, independant and free of all weakness.  Though I am sure that reapers are in constant communication with each other.

I probably should have specified a network then.

Because Harbinger is...unimpressive. The fact that the leader of the reapers themselves is personally trying to eliminate one human is bad enough, but that the leader happens to be a complete cornball is just...underwhelming. The entire reveal makes me suspect (and I know I have no concrete evidence) that Harbinger was made reaper-in-chief with the foremost intent of making him both relevant and less jokey. Didn't work (at least, not for me), unfortunately.

Also, I'm still wondering when exactly Shep figured out that Harbinger is a reaper. It seems obvious from a narrative standpoint, but the conclusion was never shown in-universe.
