So generally speaking, why do most people dig Sovereign over Harbinger?

How does that make them less impressive?

Because Harbinger is...unimpressive. The fact that the leader of the reapers themselves is personally trying to eliminate one human is bad enough, but that the leader happens to be a complete cornball is just...underwhelming. The entire reveal makes me suspect (and I know I have no concrete evidence) that Harbinger was made reaper-in-chief with the foremost intent of making him both relevant and less jokey. Didn't work (at least, not for me), unfortunately.

Also, I'm still wondering when exactly Shep figured out that Harbinger is a reaper. It seems obvious from a narrative standpoint, but the conclusion was never shown in-universe.

So you don't think the fact that he was controlling the collectors while he was clear out in dark space was not impressive?  Do you have any idea what kind of vast distances we are talking about here?

Harbinger was connected to the Collector base network during the SM (and possibly even before) and EDI scanned the CB systems and apparently confirmed that, Shepard is even shown Harbinger's schematics at the end of the game...
One cut line of dialogue from EDI (discovered by didymos) was supposed to be delivered at the Human Reaper, and said something along the lines of "New research data is available for review" or something, it may hint at that...

I have to admit, one moment I have to give to Harbinger though is the object Rho fight. The betrayal of Dr. Kenson, an increasingly desperate battle with a "last stand" smack about it, as well as some dialogue that was somewhat better written than "THIS HURTS YOU LOL" gave Harbinger's sudden appearance much greater menace and presence.

In a way, it's a lot down to how the villains are framed. Sovereign's reveal is his only direct conversation with Shepard, taking place in what is arguably the most tense and eventful mission in ME1. It gave it far more impact. Harbinger's appearances in ME2 were for the most part "run of the mill", occuring every time you had a fight with the Collectors. His end-game narration of the suicide mission was far more memorable- again, becasue it was framed within a pulse pounding outrun-the-fireball sequence, rather than just another round of combat.

So yeah the Codex from Mass Effect 3 about Sovereign was good although pretty obvious info.

And yes, it's impressive that he had long-distance control over the Collector General.

Another thing is that you only talked to Sovereign once whereas Harbinger was constantly butting in and mouthing off at you.

Don't insult me.

I don't give a sh*t about Harbinger's capabilities; as a villain, he falls flat. It's difficult to find a trash-talking moustache twiddler menacing by any measure.

I guess it's a little unfair - a lot of Sovereign's popularity is based on the fact that the one direct interaction you have with him is one of the greatest moments in ME1. It's probably my favorite scene in the entire Mass Effect franchise so far. We'll see if ME3 can top it. But at least some of that also had to do with the fact that as Sovereign is rattling off all these classic lines, we're also finding about the Reapers for the first time, and that makes the scene infinitely more dramatic and effective. The end of Arrival was clearly an attempt to recreate that scene, but it just doesn't have that same impact because we've seen Harbinger before, we know about the Reapers, we know what they're up to, and, well, actually we've just thrown a monkey wrench in their plans again. So it's not just Sovereign as a character or his dialogue, it's also the fact that he basically gets the most important scene in Mass Effect so far.

Sovereign: mystical, powerful, actual conversation with him, patient, smart, manilupative, scary, seems like he doesn't let his emotion run him, half of galaxy fleet was needed to defeat him (not counting geth, and quarians), and only manage to do so when he transfers his mind into sarens husk, and shepard defeats him, they manage to kill him, simply put HE WAS COOL EVIL CHARACTER

Harbinger: THIS HURTS YOU, BLA, BLA, BLA, BLA, BLA, BLA, BLA, don't feel anything mystical about him (just annoying), rash, clearly emotions run with his decisions, Sovereign was someone you actually fear (in terms of game of course) and harbinger just make me laugh, and sometimes annoys me (50-50%), mostly everything opposite from Sovereign/Nazara, ouhh, yeah only thing I like with harbinger was his speech when you destroy collector base, and nothing else

Simply put Sovereign was just cool, and this dushbag isn't

I think they kinda dropped the ball with the directing for Harbinger's voice acting. Either that or the voice editing. Simply put, Harbinger's voice had too much variation in pitch. Its voice actor should have spoken in a monotone (like Sovereign), and the sound editors should have invested more time in making its voice sound truly mechanical.

Also, get rid of the battle taunts, please.

Sovereign was a badass the first time you meet him, when you met Harbinger he talked to you as if he was from a porn movie, it was disturbing.

Harbinger is getting ALOT of bashing and it's really a shame.

But i think Harbinger will prove himself worthy in ME3 and kick ass!
