In the case of Sovereign vs. Harbinger, less is more.

ME1 was epic with a long boss fight at the end against Sovereign. ME2 was a side trip and I don't recall anything that I would consider a boss fight. Harbinger was just a joke.

This is a minor issue but when Sovereign said "inevitability" in ME1 it came out fine. But when Harbinger said it in Arrival it made me cringe.. He sounded like Kim Jon Il in Team America.

Alot of people seem to have the misconception that the reapers didn't start traveling through darkspace until the end of ME 2.  This is not true they have been traveling through darkspace since the end of ME 1.  The new reaper was not meant to replace sovereign and open the citadel relay.  It was meant to see if humanity could be reaperized.  The reapers were going to use the alpha relay whether the collectors could finish the human reaper or not.

I can totally buy that, but then, storywise, ME2 is a side-quest while Arrival is the main-quest :?

Talking to Sovereign on Virmire was one of my favourite moments in the whole game, what he said was cold and carried a lot of weight to it, looks like a threat sounds like a threat, thats why he's so good

Harbinger in ME2 was just tarsh talk from start to finish, did he even know what he was saying half the time, Harbinger in Arrival however was a huge improvement though not as good as Sovereign from ME1, he was heaps better than his ME2 trash talk "You galaxy is in sight, your final day is at hand" Harbinger should have been like that in ME2

So in short

Sovereign>Harbinger (Arrival)>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Harbinger (ME2)

I like Sovereign better only cause you get to fight him in his Saren Avatar body lol, Harbinger took over a bug body every 2 seconds and was way to easy to kill everytime.

Harbinger: ASSUMING CONTROL
Shepard: NUKE CANON!!

LOL

I honestly couldn't have put it better than this. Nazara was the perfect villain, his manipulation of Saren and just about every line he says surpasses anything that Harbinger does by a mile. Nazara was intimidatng, Harbinger is a joke.

Be fair to Harbinger. He didn't have centuries to plan and prepare for his attack.

Edit: actually, for an improvised plan B Harbinger doesn't do half-bad.

after 50,000 yrs you'd think they'd have a good plan b.

I don't know that the actual fight I had with Jumping Frog Saren made me feel like Sovereign was a big bad man. I mean sure it made me hate him --- a lot -- but that fight sucked.

No, shoot everything but Harbinger so he doesn't have a new body to spawn into.

Sovereign is a much better villain than Harbinger because he is used sparingly. Shepard only has one conversation with him, and it is a frightening one, and when you finally face Sovereign's avatar on the battlefield it is the toughest boss fight in Mass Effect 1. In contrast Shepard never has an actual conversation with Harbinger in Mass Effect 2, but instead gets random taunts that are hard to take seriously. "This hurts you" and "I will tear you apart If I have to" is much less intimidating than, "Rudimentary creatures of blood and flesh, you touch my mind, fumbling in ignorance, incapable of understanding," and "You exist because we allow it, and you will end because we demand it." Harbinger's threats were also hard to take seriously when his avatars being killed repeatedly and frequently in mid taunt. Instead, Harbinger should have only appeared on the battlefield rarely in Mass Effect 2, and we he did, it should have been a boss fight. Finally, Sovereign's voice sounds more intimidating than Harbinger's.

well where's the fun in that? I would love it if Harbinger had uniqe dialog if you kept killing him as he took over the collectors

Harbinger: ASSUMING CONTROL
Shepard: *Head shot*
Harbinger: ASSUMING CONTROL
Shepard: *Sniped*
Harbinger: ok seriously stop cheating you noob

So does that make Bio 2-for-2 in sucky endboss battles? I hope that's not the ME tradition.

For the record, I prefer the giant terminator to the electro-frog.

As ridiculous as Harbinger is, I honestly like him better than Sovereign.

I like to see my main villains to be fun to hate. Saren was fun to hate because he kept inserting himself in Shepard's way. Sovereign? Not so much. He was there in the background, indoctrinating and being mysterious mainly. You had to defeat him because he could indoctrinate and wanted to do other terrible things, but I never felt hate towards that character. It just felt like the geth did in ME1 - this force that got in your way that you had to stop.

Harbinger is more similar to Saren. Saren got more character development than Harbinger, but Harbinger was still fun to hate with the way he taunted you and kept showing up. Harbinger even taunts you in Arrival, hinting of what might be to come in ME3.

The best villains in movies, games, whatever IMO are the ones you love to hate and keep showing up to try to take the protagonist down.

Honestly I think the story works better when the Reaper is the 'background enemy' and Shepard's main antagonist is an indoctrinated  but charismatic minion like Saren. Mass Effect 3 would benefit from another Saren type character that is acting as Shepard's foil.

I admit I actually like Harbinger slightly more than Sovereign. I understand what people are trying to say about Sovereign being more reaper-like due to him sounding like an emotionless machine because he is one, but to me Harbinger kind of built up the Reapers a bit more.

Consider: The Reapers have always been built up as these god-machines and I consider both Sovereign and Harbinger as the different "faces" of the Reapers. Sovereign clearly represented the "machine" face of the Reapers due to his tone of voice and boasting, whereas Harbinger to me represented the god-like aspect of the Reapers in that he is active even when he's far away in dark space and that his tone of voice had a more demonic and foreboding tone.

I personally think Harbinger is awesome... I understand that he's trying to sow the seeds of doubt and futility by his repetitive/unkillable banter.

But being able to destroy his collector vessel so easily is too satisfying for that strategy to pay off.

When I first encountered him (first playthrough), I started calling Harbinger "The Epic Man."

Honest question, have my own opinion but will withhold it.

Because Sovereign was what an elder machine god should be. An uncaring cthulhu who sees other types of life as bacteria compared to his kind.

Harbinger was just an omnipresent troll voice..... Though I did like his voice better, so I'm hoping Bioware will fix him and bring him more in line with what Reapers should be.
