Greetings fellow Alliance citizens,

I'm playing through ME2 again in preparation for ME3, and am encountering lots of random freezes requiring me to power the XBox off and back on.  It always happens during load screens or when Shepard is moving around, either in combat or in a non-hostile area where you can talk to characters.  It has never happened during a dialogue sequence.  No accompanying graphic glitches, just the screen freezes, the sound stops, and I have to restart the console.  This also happened during my latest ME1 playthrough which I did right before ME2, but not with any other games.  These issues definitely did not happen the last time I played the games, back in 2010.  I'm using an original 360, not an S, not entirely sure which chipset but I can check.

I have tried:

* Clearing the XBox's cache.
* Playing offline.
* Installing the game to the hard drive.
* Using a different hard drive.
* Copying my saves to a flash drive and playing without the hard drive.  Also offline since it always asks me to downoad a dashboard update but for some reason won't save it to the flash drive, so I can never stay online.  I didn't have any freezes with this setup, but it is obviously less than ideal.

Short of purchasing a new console (which is my next step) and restarting with a new Shepard (completely out of the question; the ME series is a very personal experience to me and I'm not abandoning what I've already built) does anyone have any other suggestions I could try?

Thanks in advance.

That's a thorough report there of the issue you're having, and it's a great help. I only wish I could provide you with more assistance. I've always pegged freezes as random occurrences requiring the usual reboot and start again. As such I don't have much to add to that (you've already performed the standard procedures as far as I know).

I had always thought that the 360s had a limited onboard memory for dash updates which should limit the need for external storage (and certainly since you mention using a HDD it makes it a bit puzzling why it won't update properly).

While I understand the reluctance to start a new Shepard for a proper runthrough in preparation for ME3 I would like to suggest you start a new game independent of your current ones to see whether the game freezes as much. (What I have in mind are possible corrupted save files though that is a slim chance as they probably wouldn't load, but it might be worth eliminating that possibility.) Perhaps even use another Gamertag to see if it freezes as much.

Perhaps someone else has other more conducive suggestions.
