Leliana's voice actress is French, so I'm not sure why people are calling her accent fake - maybe because she tones it down more at times?

She's originally from the Med. and is based out of England

Her primary language is still French, and after visiting France, I can attest her accent is far more authentic than the other Orlesian voices in the game, save for Riordan's maybe. Still, it's possible some English or other accents have seeped into hers.
Edit: Also, where in the Mediterranean is she from, do you know? Because last time I checked, France bordered it.

That's good, because Marjolaine's accent sucks miserably.DalishRanger wrote...

If Marjolaine's accent is real then I'm the queen of Hyboria.
I'm pretty sure Bioware has put lots of money into the voiceover and that all the Orlaisians are native french speakers.
From memory, Marjolaine just sounds very much like some French gal that speak a very accented english.
Sure it's perhaps a bit too heavy, but it definitely sounded real.
Actually, this is incorrect. I recognized Marjolaine's VA right away (and she's also the voice of Anora's maid and at least one of the Desire Demons) because she's done voices for Bioware before (such as Aerie in Baldur's Gate II), as well as pretty much every cartoon I grew up with in the 90's: Kath Soucie. Marjolaine's accent is certainly not authentic at all, though I've heard worse fake French accents than hers before. Leliana's voice actress (Corinne Kempa) is French, so I'm not sure why people are calling her accent fake - maybe because she tones it down more at times?
I wonder why they decided to bother with the French accent in the first place. I mean, Tevinter mages don't seem to have any particular accent. Neither do dwarves. Even elves don't have one, if I remember correctly.

Everyone's got an accent, it's just the degree of how "thick" it is and if it's one you hear often. Accents you hear everyday become normal, so you tend not to think about them. For example, I was born in New York but grew up in North Carolina and Georgia. My accent is mostly watered down upstate New Yorker, with tiny bits of Southern twang. My friends usually can't tell I have an accent. However, when I met an ex's borderline hillbilly family (VERY heavy backwater speech), they were amused by my "thick Yankee accent" because it was very different from what they usually heard; it's all relative.
The elves tended to have what sounded like generic Canadian and Northern American accents. Shianni especially - the way she says, "sorry" gives her away as from that region to me. The dwarves had similar accents, which was a creative choice if I remember correctly. Bioware wanted to move away from the Scottish stereotype. Personally, I like it.

As for a future game set in Orlais, I wouldn't mind it if most of the primary characters had real French VAs like Leliana and Riordan (Stephane Cornicard). Fake accents I could put up with if they were in limited supply or done well.
The accents on Marjolaine & Erlina was too over-the-top. Leliana, was subdued.
While I would like DA2 to take place in Orlais, I only wonder if it could live up to some of the fanfare, like in Leliana's descriptions of Val Royeaux. (consider for example how underwhelming the Imperial City was in Oblivion)

Let's go for something different, like Orlais.
Hell, the more alien the culture the better. Let's go to Tevinter and check out where they have rampant slavery and Mages live in high ziggurat-ish towers performing blood sacrifice of slaves en masse to extend their own lives.
Yep, that would be fun,
