I'm going against the curve with Samara. Her biotics helped me immensely with my Insanity run, especially against the Collectors during the SM. She's not a LI. Go figure.

If we are talking about the fanbase as a whole rather than our own individual favorite characters, Garrus would probably get the most votes. He has always been one of the fan favorites, and benefits from being in both games. After Mass Effect 1 was released Wrex was probably the most popular character, but not being on the squad in Mass Effect 2 had an effect on his popularity. A lot of players now have never had him on their squad (having started the series at ME2) and with Garrus being in both games (and being bad ass in both), he has surpassed Wrex as the fan favorite.
Tali, Liara and Legion would probably round out the top 5 along with Garrus and Wrex.

1. Liara I wuv Liara, she's my all time favorite. She's have the most interesting story and background.
2. Tali she my second favorite female character. Her species is interesting and sweet.
3. Garrus. He's my buddy I use him. I like Turians and he's cool, interesting.

^ I too like Thane he's a cool Assassain with good powers. He's not useless. I prefer my top 5, the humans though are the bottom of my list except Ash and Miranda.

My squad is usually Zaeed and Thane now. Double Incisors and 50% Weapon Damage are hard to pass up. I've actually started sidelining Legion because of it.

The problem with all of those polls as well as anyone you could post today is that it will be naturally skewed due to factors such as LI battles. At the time Liara and Tali fans were killing the polls by voting down the other character. So even today, Miranda fans will vote down Liara/Tali/VS and so on and vice versa. So to be honest it would never be very accurate.

I think Liara and Tali are perceived as popular because of their rabid fandom, but outside the social site here, it's probably a different story.

Not true. Liara AND Tali are huge fan favorites. Don't forget maybe about 3 - 5% of the fanbase visit the BSN, so do NOT go by these boards. I'd say Liara and Tali are just simply favorites. honestly, I'd say the ones you see prominently are fan favorites. I would guess that without jeopordizing the overarching story, BioWare caters to fan favorites, so if that is true, what most of you say is just about right:

Garrus, Ashley, Kaidan, Zaeed, WREX, and Jacob when bringing him along is not going to doom me to failure. I guess I sort of have a soft spot for the soldiers and grizzled veterans. I have a feeling I'm gonna like the meathead named Vega too.

I think both characters are popular outside of their rabid fandom as well. Out of the 3 romanceable characters in Mass Effect 1, Liara was probably the most chosen, and the best Mass Effect related DLC thus far (Lair of the Shadow Broker) is devoted to her. I'm not sure how Tali stacks up against Miranda but it is probably a safe bet that Tali & Miranda were the most chosen LIs in ME2. Tali was in ME1 as well however, so I'd say overall she probably has an edge on Miranda as far as fans go, even outside the BSN.
