Romance is a huge part of the human experience most of the greatest stories involve a romance with that action. Sword of Truth would not be the same without Richard and Kahlan. Most of Piers Anthony's books would be miserable failures, King Arthur would not be nearly as interesting without Lancelot and Gueniviere.

Its all about the connections. The more robust and realistic the character the more attached you become to the character. Its like soup. sure you can eat it without the salt but its not as good.

I wouldn't even play the games without the romance. I outgrew video games a long time ago. Then my brother turned me onto BIOWARE games and he totally had sex with an alien chic. I was all like "Whoa dude you can do that?" Then I paid attention to the story and realized how much fun it was to RP a bad ass femshep.

I played Skyrim for a couple hours and now it bores me.
I still play ME1, and 2 and DAO and DA2.

Its the romance. A novel and more grown up version of pretend play.

To me, the character relationships are as important to the game as any of the action/plot devices it contains.

In fact, th relationships drive the rest of the plot.

SPOILER IF YOU'VE NEVER PLAYED ANY MASS EFFECT!!!

The whole premise is that you are fighting a genocidal race that is hell bent on destroying EVERYONE in existence.

You develop a rapport with certain characters, heck, you "fall in love" with some of them.

This is the definitive, driving force of why you want to stop these things. You want to protect not only yourself, but your loved ones and friends you have met and interacted with over the course of the last two games.

I think THIS is one of the main reasons everyone is so interested in it. The writers have done a fantastic job (in all aspects except for TWO or THREE instances) of making these characters so relatable likable that you're playing the game to save THEM from extinction.

That's my take on it, anyway.

The LI is Shepard's reason to fight for the entire galaxy - since s/he does it for the LI.

It's not grown up at all especially in the case of DA2. Definitely a lot better in Kotor imo.

I guess the fact that Shepard has spent so much time as a Marine and training mean nothing as long as it's for love right? What's several billion people compared to the woman/man your sleeping with? /sarcasm

Ringo: ever asked a real soldier?
Most of them are fighting for their families, their loved ones or simply their friends. Only few are fighting for a faceless crowd. And only the stupid are fighting because of the fight.

Don't wanna offend you ... but guess my theory works. ;)

They're important cause Shepard needs a hug!
Needs a hug, a kiss, a pat on the back. More importantly, he needs support while walking through hell. Shepard's sanity is slipping. From the beacon, the cipher, being mind-raped all the time, or the pressure.

He needs an anchor to reality. LI can give him exactly that.

The ability to romance different characters - the option, in addition to all the other options I have - adds to my overall feeling of immersion, whether I choose to romance someone or not. A lot of other things are also involved in what I consider "immersive" gameplay, including story, combat mechanics, etc etc. Added up, they all make me feel part of a living world, one which my choices can have an influence on, possibly even change in profound ways.

From my perspective, the friendships and romances pull me into a game as a player much more becauses it fleshes characters out and adds to their personalities as individual people.

Romance has been a popular diversion in BioWare games since the days of Baldur's Gate 2, almost a tradition. The thing is, they are optional in regards to participating in a romance and are there for those who do enjoy the romances and friendships that can develop.

The Mass Effect series is not supposed to be all about combat. Mass Effect is about choices. You can be a paragon with a LI or love interestf or a renegade and many more different options. Or u actually can be a die hard battle lover they are your choices to make

Because its something to fight for, and every single organism in the world needs something to love other than their self.

I was going to say the same thing. It gives your Shepard that sense of feeling that not only is he/she fighting for the galaxy, but something personal that Shepard deeply cares for and that there is something to look forward to. It ccould be the driving force that makes he/she keep going and never give up.

Romances are all part of the immersion in a game. Being able to connect more closely with a character is a way for the player's own feelings to be acknowledged along with the expected decisions made in combat and on side missions. It helps to bring a part of us that has to sit on the edges and watch the events unfold to add more of our own desires and emotions in order to make our experience with Mass Effect truly our own and not some line assembly accomplishment. This is what brings other people together and want to talk about it: we want to know how others handled the situation and thus open up an aspect of our personality that is for the most part, forced to sit silent and separate, a feeling of isolation that we've learned to relegate to the background but still persists until it finds a voice.

I doubt that the romances are so important to Bioware games that they would fall appart without them, but they do add an extra something to gameplay that makes it that much more memorable. Personally, having played the Fable series, there are far worse ways to implement a romance plot than the method used by Bioware. Also, they have been improving the romance subplots as time goes on. Despite the many gamers who reflect negatively upon DA2, many of these individuals do say that they enjoyed the romances that were offered. When I look back on the Bioware games that I played in the past, romances are one of the aspects that stand out. The Heavenly Lilly of JE or Bastilla of KOTOR go hand in hand along with my memories of intense combat and an engrossing storyline. Neither romance overshadowed the main story, but instead served to add something extra that enriched the experience of gaming. In many ways, the romance subplots remind me of two friends I once knew when I was obtaining my first degree, they often role played as a couple durring our weekly D and D sessions. The colourful, and sometimes odd lines they would trade back and fourth only serving to make the RP experience more enjoyable. So no, I don't think the romances are important. But they sure as hell can make the game alot more fun.

Eh, romances aren't important to the story, really. But they make for some nice character interaction and in some Bioware games let you influence the fate of the character.

They're not.

They're just nice sidequests and help flesh out the story. Nothing more.

That's cute.
Mind to share that secret how you convinced your GF to play ME? I failed with my fiancee in that matter. She's the typical "I play only SIMS" woman

Doesn't do anything for me. But if people get off on one extra conversation, and a bit of flirting followed by 30 seconds of dry humping who am I to judge.

For the crazy obsessed fans (mainly those who like Tali/Miranda apparently), ME romances are meant to further facilitate their social decline, thereby ensuring a limitless supply of workers for the fast food and cleaning industries.

I think thats why McDonalds has a large share of EA stocks.

You're so cruel to my neutral Shep, who doesn't have an LI and still manages to fight for the galaxy.
