I just finished Arkham City and if you've played it, you can download Catwoman for free on day one.  I didn't since my console isn't hooked into the internoodle. I've since found out that playing Catwoman is not only cool, but opens significant story content, which really pisses me off.  I understand purchasing DLC content after release (LOTSB, Arrival), but what the hell is the point of restricting major content on day one, if you're only giving it away for free??? Why not just package it with the game? I can't imagine it's just to get your stupid email address, is it?  Anyone have insight as to this frustrating trend?

To know that the game which is the Ending of the series is incomplete and you must pay more for the full game (the upcoming DLCs after this free one)

I believe it's intended to combat the second hand market. People that buy the game new get the DLC free. People that buy it used have to pay for it. Unfortunately this type of strategy completely overlooks those buyers that aren't connected to the internet.

They pull or lock content in the game just so you can buy the game new.

That's correct. The people who actually made the game don't get anything for used copies that are sold. That's why this strategy is going to probably continue on for the forseeable future.

People who don't have their console or pc connected to the internet is getting smaller with every year so they will probably be a casualty of this system.

Combating second hand sales, as said above. It could also be looked at as a form of DRM, although far more benign than most; that said, anybody pirating a game is just going to pirate the DLC as well.

That's sounds spot on. I wonder if the next step with next gen consoles will be completely downloadable game and no hard copies (sort of the trend in music).

Well, it would certainly fit in with Microsoft's desire to end playing used games on consoles (since they also don't get a cut from that).

Everything is about friggin' money nowadays...I miss the good old days were you could still just go to a store, buy a hard copy of the game, install it and start playing without any fuss...No friggin' clients or accounts needed...No issues with DLC... :/

Well, these places are making games as a business. They want to be paid. If they don't get paid they could only make games as a hobby and you wouldn't get games that are nearly as good as there are today. They would take a lot longer to make too, since everyone would have day-jobs as well to support their game making.

Dude if you bought Arkham City in a store then the Catwomen DLC comes with it. You only have to redeem it though on xbox live.

But its still free. I bought Arhham City sometime ago but the DLC still came with the game for free. You only have to pay for it if you bought a used copy of the game and the code has been used before.

They won't even be downloadable. The game will stay in the cloud.

It's the fault of anyone who ever bought a pre-owned game.

Thargorichiban: I know, I know...It's just that games start getting this 'soul-less' feel about them. Like Mass Effect, which is a heavily hyped game with lots of DLC and whatnot...It feels as if the main focus is moving towards the franchise instead of the game itself. Meh, let's just hope the game fulfills the expectations. Not all expectations, as that would be madness, but that it at least doesn't turn out as crappy as DA 2 was. (and YES i know DA 2 was made by a different team, but still...funds, developping time and quality should be the same for each game no matter what team it is on)

Huh. Considering how FFXIII-2 is going to have episodic DLC set after the game, I wonder if they're planning on making it available for free after beating it as well?

Course that's wishful thinking, but I got to remain optimistic.
