From the looks of it, ME3's space battles may rank whithin the top of all space battles, I mean, anywhere.
The BSG battle during "Exodus, Part II" and the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine battle during "Sacrifice of Angels" are the only two that are beating what I've seen for me at this point. Star Wars films have done terrific spectacles too but I haven't felt as emotionally invested in them -- they're just 'fun' to me, which is wonderful but not the same.
Always partial to The Way of the Warrior, myself. Wen it was sort of a new thing for Star Trek to have a space battle that big.
That whole two-hour premiere was very much a big change for the show. It needed to gain more viewers as viewership was eroding in those first three, good-but-slower seasons, and bringing Worf aboard and opening with a giant space battle the likes of which Trek had really never before seen? Excellent moves.
Of course if DS9 were the subject of BSN's obsession we'd get thousands of "omg catering to the lowest denominator" comments and people would threaten to cancel their cable subscriptions. We'd also get Jake and Dax dressed up for Jersey Shore.
