Well it can be subjective or objective depending on whether what is being critiqued fails a set of technical standards or personal standards.

There really isn't an objective determination of "tacky-"ness.

The ratio is also a factor. There were a couple preview pics of Tricia Helfer where she looked like she did something other than model in bikinis. Not saying it wasn't there at all, but it wasn't everything.

If that makes any sense. It probably doesn't.

There are also several images of Chobot sitting around playing video games. I'd argue that there are more provocative Helfer pics than there are Chobot pics.

No. It isn't tacky because it doesn't detract from your default playing experience.

First of all, thats not why its tacky. It is tacky because it was added on and served no real value towards the gaming experience. It didnt enhance it in any way, it didnt provide a better mode to play (simply pretending to steer...isnt "better").

Secondly...you didnt read what i wrote...YES it DID detract from my playing experience, because i did not enjoy using it in conjunction with my game. Yes, its optional, but if a person has one and decides to use it...it should be FUN, no? Thats the whole reason why we game.

Instead, we have Microsoft, trying to jump on the Wii bandwagon and develop a peripheral that very few people use or even enjoy for that matter..and they think by forcing game developers to utilize it in their games, that people will rush out and buy the Kinect. And dont be mistaken...they forced BioWare to find a way to incorporate it for ME3, just like they demanded Forza to do so as well. Just so they can slap that "Better with Kinect" logo on the box.

True but there is a very widely-accepted view on "tackiness;" in my opinion Mass Effect hasn't gotten to that point yet, but they better be careful if they want to protect the integrity of the franchise, especially after ME3 releases.  They are definitely teetering a bit.

What saving costs has to do with anything? Let them spend and spend big to make it better. The return should be much more than enough to compensate it. We have a saying here, I don't know how it should translate into English but I am sure there is one similar: "The cheap ends up expensive", like DA2.

You don't save money. You put more and more to make it better and it will sell more and you'll profit more. There are some big names on Skyrim and I don't see anyone saying they shouldn't be there to save money and the game sold pretty well, I'd say.

Who's talking about the cost? I don't see it in the OP.

I think it's annoying that everyone looks at Chobot as "just some hot girl". As far as I can tell from interviews, she seems like she genuinely enjoys video games and knows a thing or two about them, even if she's most famous for her looks. She's not even a major character; she's basically just playing herself, so I don't see what the big deal is at all.

Are you talking about the ones that were posted on the BSN? The ones where she is playing the xbox 360 wearing a white dress with strappy heels on? The one where she is sitting with her legs wide open in what is clearly a photo op? Yeah, I wouldn’t say those are normal photos where she is laid back playing games and chillin’. They were clearly a “See? Gamer girls can be sexy!” posed sort of thing.

I felt the same about Sasha Grey in SR3. I mean she's a porn star, she's had some acting experience.

The big deal (to OP) is that she wasn't added because she "enjoys video games a knows a thing or two about them." She was added, according to OP because she's a "hot girl."

You're placing too much emphasis on HER and not enough on BW.

The game not being mature because of some apps and multiplayer doesn't really make sense to me. Though I do agree that the decision to cast Chobot is a bit.. strange.

ME 3 doesn't rely on those "gimmicky" features to sell itself, like i said before, at its core, its still about story, character, and player choice. All that other crap is just fluff, and if it didn't exist the game would still be solid.

They are expanding their markets and making a profit, not a big deal.

This did.

Tacky isn't the right word, but completely unnecessary is the right phrase. And I'd hardly call Mark Meer a big name. Bioware could have saved allot of money (and maybe put that money into making the game better) had they not hired, Kieth David, Martin Sheen, Yvonne Strahovsik, Freddie Prince Jr, and Tricia Helfer. I'd imagine Seth Green
and Chobot aren't that expensive. Although I do have a problem with Chobot being in the game it's more of my dislike for the "Us nerds huh?" mentality. It's pretty unfounded, but at least I can indetify it as such. However I'd argue my dislike for her character model is reasonable.

And I couldn't agree more with you two!

One might argue that getting "big names" is a waste of money, because there are lesser-known people who will just as good of a job at a much cheaper price, allowing that money to go towards improving other aspects of the game.

I'm sorry but after seeing Martin Sheen as the TIM absolutely no one else should have been given that part. Seriously, he played it perfectly.

Not just that - but he's Martin effing Sheen. No one has as big a name as him. So if he's in Mass Effect at all..that's some serious powerhouse.

I was concerned somewhat for ME3.

Then I read a few spoilers.

I am no longer concerned. ME3 will will be awesome.

Gimmicky inserts like Kinect and 27 bajillion exclusive DLC weapons are harmless. If they want to try them - go for it .

I was refering to the one where she is wearing a perfectly normal skirt and shirt or the one where she is playing Centipede in a regular jacket and isn't at all "sexed up".

Agreed fully with the OP. It seems to be some kind of challenge to see how many useless "features" they can add while paying only token respect to the roots of the franchise.

ME has always been gimmicky. Actually, it could be argued all games are gimmicky in some way. You just have to figure out if those gimmicks are ones you like.
