All it takes is one look at those inflatable omniblades to see how gimmicky it is, and it's a shame really. I had very similar problems with dragon Age 2's advertising which was pretty much:

"Sign up here to get <insert useless in-game item> free!"

"Join this group to get <Insert useless in-game item> free!"

"Pre order from this shop to get <Insert useless in-game item> free!"

"If one hundred thousand of you download this demo then you'll all get <insert even more useless in-game item> free!"

A game should be sold with footage of it's gameplay, story and characters- not superficial in-game items or cheap inflatable omniblades.

I'm actually quite content so far, yes I realise that Bioware have only been showing off the gimmicks, and MP, but I'd rather want them to that than to show off too much of the story. Remember back close to the release of ME2 when they showed how Shepard "died" and spoiled the entire beginning of the game? They got a lot of backlash for that. They're actually guilty of the same thing with ME1 too, where they revealed the nature of the Reaper's threat long before the game was even released. Essentially spoiling large parts of the story.

If they need to show something, show of the gimmicks, and the MP, it's better that they keep the SP more secluded, and reveal less of it. So the surprises will be greater for us when we finally play the game.

With that being said, I wouldn't mind if they'd talk about exploration and how that will work in ME3, and other gameplay features. For example will we still be able to pick up dead enemies' guns?

Hmm...alright, alright. Let's see about this then.

What about expensive inflatable omniblades

Ok here goes: 1)yes the DLC, multiplayer, pandering to the new fans/shooter crowd is gimmicky and annoying. 2)Chobot(while hot) is not an actor. Samuel L Jackson is an Academy Award nominated actor. She is a "journalist" who got famous for licking a PSP. While she may enjoy gaming she is not really all that well informed for a gaming journalist. She is nerdbait plain and simple. 3)Tricia Helfer was originally cast for her looks, and as her abilities grew her role grew. And I love BSG. I have seen her in other things and yes she is very good. 4) I will still get this game but I am not liking where BW is headed either by their choice or EA mandates.

Yup, Bioware seems to be way more desperate for sales. Its such a bad look for them because they should just be selling units based on the quality of their games, not the gimmicks or cameos or accessories they can sell and monetize.

But, they're still doing it with showing footage of gameplay, story and characters.

And why do you care?

I always found the most appealing aspect to ME being the serious and mature tone the series set.

I'm starting to feel a bit out of my comfort zone here though....

What's with all these weird add on's? Multiplayer (which is looking pretty sick now I have to say)Kinect, IPod app... Even things like adding Chobot to the cast is pretty gimmicky, just an excuse to name drop really. I don't think I'm gonna use half these features... Probably just multiplayer a few times :/

What do you guys think? Are all these things really necessary? Or are they just making the game feel tacky and cheap? Should  Biowares efforts be focused on other aspects of the game?

I don't think it's Mass Effect itself that is becoming too gimmicky, but Bioware.

This sort of marketing didn't do jack for DA2's sales. I'm not sure why they thought doing the same thing only bigger and more obnoxious, would do anything but annoy people.

But it gets buried under the gimmicky crap.  Stuff like multiplayer, iOS games, Facebook, DLC, and inflatable omniblades is given more attention than the actual game.

And why do you care?

Because gimmicks are a turn-off.  If I had never heard of Mass Effect, and I saw all this marketing crap?  I'd lose interest.  Games that are all about bonus items and celebrity showcasing tend to be money grabs that suck hardcore.

They are misrepresenting their product to the detriment of both long-time fans and possible new players.

When was the last time we saw any decent and voiced footage of a mission or segment of Mass Effect 3's single-player?

When was the last time we saw any non-multiplayer gameplay footage?

When was the last time we saw a character that isn't Garrus or Liara featured in any Mass Effect 3 media? Tali has only appeared in about 3 two-second clips, and I can't remember seeing any footage of Kaiden at all.

In fact, when was the last time we heard any interesting information about Mass Effect 3 that wasn't leaked or about multiplayer?

Those are what I really want to see, not giant inflatable omniblades or an announcement that a woman I've never heard of is voicing a character in the game.

No, it's trying to appeal to a vast majority of people instead of just one group of people. I know, shocking.

I think there's just way too much Chobot-hate in this thread. Every actor starts off somewhere. You can't expect every actor to suddenly be famous just so you accept them. Some of your comments in this thread seem very backward in your understanding of how celebrity works and how actors work.

Please take your hate elsewhere. Thank you.

End of line.
