All it takes is one look at those inflatable omniblades to see how gimmicky it is, and it's a shame really. I had very similar problems with dragon Age 2's advertising which was pretty much:
"Sign up here to get <insert useless in-game item> free!"
"Join this group to get <Insert useless in-game item> free!"
"Pre order from this shop to get <Insert useless in-game item> free!"
"If one hundred thousand of you download this demo then you'll all get <insert even more useless in-game item> free!"
A game should be sold with footage of it's gameplay, story and characters- not superficial in-game items or cheap inflatable omniblades.

I don't think it's Mass Effect itself that is becoming too gimmicky, but Bioware.Alex Arterius wrote...
I always found the most appealing aspect to ME being the serious and mature tone the series set.
I'm starting to feel a bit out of my comfort zone here though....
What's with all these weird add on's? Multiplayer (which is looking pretty sick now I have to say)Kinect, IPod app... Even things like adding Chobot to the cast is pretty gimmicky, just an excuse to name drop really. I don't think I'm gonna use half these features... Probably just multiplayer a few times :/
What do you guys think? Are all these things really necessary? Or are they just making the game feel tacky and cheap? Should Biowares efforts be focused on other aspects of the game?
But it gets buried under the gimmicky crap. Stuff like multiplayer, iOS games, Facebook, DLC, and inflatable omniblades is given more attention than the actual game.Mesina2 wrote...
But, they're still doing it with showing footage of gameplay, story and characters.
Because gimmicks are a turn-off. If I had never heard of Mass Effect, and I saw all this marketing crap? I'd lose interest. Games that are all about bonus items and celebrity showcasing tend to be money grabs that suck hardcore. And why do you care?

When was the last time we saw any decent and voiced footage of a mission or segment of Mass Effect 3's single-player?
When was the last time we saw any non-multiplayer gameplay footage?
When was the last time we saw a character that isn't Garrus or Liara featured in any Mass Effect 3 media? Tali has only appeared in about 3 two-second clips, and I can't remember seeing any footage of Kaiden at all.
In fact, when was the last time we heard any interesting information about Mass Effect 3 that wasn't leaked or about multiplayer?
Those are what I really want to see, not giant inflatable omniblades or some announcement that a woman I don't know is apparently voicing a character on the game.
